There are some efforts to create a completely open FastTrack alternative,
under the name "openFT". However, any such new network would require large
amounts of popular content before people will switch to using it. The FT
network, with on average 500,000+ users online, provides enormous amounts
of readily available content, but the closed nature of it seems to prevent
transferring this content to other networks' search facilities.
Fortunately, the FT protocol apparently specifies that every FT "node"
(i.e. computer running FT software) should have a small HTTP-like server
running on port 1214 that can produce a plaintext list or index of shared
files on that node, when asked for it. So, when the IP address of a FT
node is known, the index can be requested and shared via different means
than the FT network. This is what shadowFT is all about.
I'm not sure I understand this story. Surely the artist won't get paid for cable, satellite, and internet play of their songs if they don't own the copyright to the song? Most artists sign their copyrights away as a part of their contract.
Why not just build your own?

You can also assemble your own mp3 player pretty easily and put whatever hard drive you like on it. I was just re-reading the old "Hackable Christmas Presents" story from not too long ago, and saw this link:
The board that's sold here only cost $150. And 80 gig hard drives only go for $139 on pricewatch.com. You would have to make your own case, but so what? Plus, the firmware is GPL'ed and flashable. What more could you need?
I just run an RC cable from my sound card's audio out port to my stereo's auxillary in.
Cost to me: $1.50 for cable.
And these guys want $1000?
I mean, I can see the argument that you can't listen to music while playing games this way. But hey..just buy an old 486 with a sound card for $50-$100 and put it in an out of the way place near your stereo?
I agree that it's uncool of our military to bomb on holy days.
As to the 'violence doesn't solve anything' point, though.. when i was in history class I was told something that I think really applies here.
When WWI came, it was really really bloody, because people were still using age-old sword and shield tactics but had guns instead.
After that war, people didn't want to be in wars anymore. It was clear that peace should be attempted at all costs. Violence doesn't solve anything. Germany had been defeated and other countries had it under their thumb. So, when Germany started mass producing tanks and taking over neighboring countries, a policy of appeasement was in place. Europe didn't want to piss anyone off so they just let Germany build a military and start bulling other countries. The result? WWII!

Globalization

I think that globalization is inevitable.
The only reason cultures are significantly different is that up until now, distances significantly impeded communication. If the global communication infrastructure stays in place for a few hundred years, it's almost unavoidable that cultures and languages start to meld together.
That's globalization to me -- the assimilation of all cultures into one culture. It's long term, though, like evolution. So it's not something most people would notice unless they really thought about it.
Actually, i've seen interviews on tv with other actors who've said the exact same thing. They didn't say anything about the dirty part...they just said that he was a comic genius but that you'd never know it from the work he's known for. Hmm...too bad I can't remember who it was tho.:[
The Internet was just fine before the corporations decided to pre-empt it and fill it will all these god-awful banner ads. We had a good thing, still do. We built it ourself for fun. Lots of people create web sites because they love the technology, or whatever their hobby is. Now that the dot-bomb crash has come, they think the internet is going down with them? I don't think so. With any luck, it will just go back to the way it was before they came.
In fact, i saw on the news yesterday a thing on biological warfare.. Anthrax in particular. The 'expert' talked like it was very easy to get ahold of Anthrax(i.e., you can make it in a lab, and it occurs in nature, or something like that). Very little of it is required to annihilate a city, and a single man could release it to the winds on a boat from the harbor and infect a whole city. The terrorist doesn't even have to kill himself, because we'd never even know it was happening until people started dropping dead 2 to 3 days later. We would probably never even know who did it.
My point is that there are lots of creative ways to kill masses of people with scarce resources. The WTC thing was just one of them. There is no way to defend against them all.
If only teachers would explain calculus in terms of programming, everything would be so much easier! We should have special math classes for programmers so that teachers can use such analogies.
I think I agree with you, but the thing is that Redhat does not control how the software is developed. It's all volunteer. Better usability would have to be a concerted effort by everyone involved.
The bottom line, though, is that our operating system is designed for us, the computer experts. I like the idea of having an OS for beginners (Windows, OS X), and one for experts (*nix). It makes my life easier to not have things in my computer hidden from me and to not be treated like an idiot. Conversely, these qualities DO make life easier for the beginner. Two different designs.
Did any of you ever think that maybe all the childish high-school insults you all keep throwing at Katz might just be hurting his feelings?
What exactly is it about the internet that makes you all feel like you can just abandon your common courtesy? This attitude you all are copping is one of the major problems with the internet -- everyone acts like an ass because they have no accountability. Well, I guess you can all be disgusted with me now because I was contrary, but i am just so tired of people being asses.

$800 just seems way too expensive to me.
doh! ok...the preview button is now going to be my new best friend. :)
There is a slashbox for the register.
This is great! Now all I need is a 144 terabyte hard drive.
I guess this guy can add Transmeta to the list of "* is dying" stories.
The new Pool of Radiance does the same when you try to uninstall it. :] Thankfully there's a patch, though.
How about www.openrpg.com? The screenshots look pretty cool.

What's the point of releasing the same program under two different names? Is this some sort of marketing gimmick?

Neuromancer isn't hard sci-fi? What exactly are the definitions of hard and soft sci-fi, anyway? I can't think of anything harder than Neuromancer.

No, that really was one of the themes of the article. Timothy was only summing it up for people.
The D in FUD is Doubt. Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt
I always thought it was Fear, Uncertanity, & Doritos.
