    Why would it be? Not everyone has a scrollwheel on their mouse. Besides, it's wrong for some mice aswell.

    You do realise there are 3 distributions of debian, right?

    Stable: Released every now and then, no updates except security and the occasional backport.

    Unstable: Packages as they are uploaded... updated daily.

    Testing: packages that survived in unstable for a certin amount of time without bugs.

    If you dont want you're system updated except for critical fixes, use stable, if you want something reasonably stable use testing, if you want something with the newest versions/bugs/packaging problems use unstable.

    There are also the discover, hotplug and mdetect packages that do alot of of hardware detection for you... Debian DOES have these features... They just arn't in the installer...

    I only want the installer to install base. The rest should be up to me.

    This is based on what is in the PuTTY FAQ.

    Throw this in a batchfile, for instance puttystore.bat. Edit to store the registry patch where you want.

    %HOMEDRIVE%
    cd %HOMEPATH%

    regedit /e etc\putty.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY

    Run the batch file every time you make a change to your settings, put put something in your login script to reload the registry settings.

    I actually LIKE that I can see what I'm closing. It also helps the computer know WHERE you messed up.

    You do realize that 70 mb you downloaded contained the following:

    1) A TON of fonts.
    2) A TON of libraries
    3) A TON of stuff that isn't actually used on OSX. Read the Install file, it tells you what you need.

    Just because your stupid doesn't mean X is bloated. Oh, and your comparing it to ONE implementation of X too.

    Actually, with APT you can setup your own debian dists in freenet, which is P2P. It's also got other things going for it, like being completly encrypted.

    Thereby having a P2P install...

    Debian packages are usually signed by gnupg with a key from a well known keyfile. Also you can pick up most of the keys from a keyserver aswell.

    Uh, with most shells you can use filename completion, so all you'd have to type of that long directory name is the first few letters...

    As far as cryptic command line arguments, and keyboard shortcuts... If you use it for a few days you know them. Besides, alot of programs share the same keyboard shortcuts, arguments.

    Of course, you sound like your saying this: "Studies have shown that people who don't know how to type can type faster with 2 fingers then with 10"

    The VM is what makes Java secure. As for the JIT part... Java Bytecode is translated by a JIT to native code at runtime - BY THE VM

    Well, you brought up something interesting... Say some user wants to upgrade his kernel... Does he wait for RH to release an SRPM, or does he go and find the kernel source like everyone else? If he just grabs a stock kernel, he wont be able to boot, and is going to be PISSED OFF.

    The GCC problem was bad enough... But it was more of a problem for people who don't USE RH then it was for RH's users. This kernel thing is not going to hurt everyone else, so it's not so much of a big deal for us. :)

    Uh, Tribes 2 runs faster under Linux (well, it was the case when it was released, patches have probably made them similar) then it does under windows, as long as your using an Nvidia card. Everyone is using an Nvidia card these days...

    Quake 3 performs very well aswell.

    And so does Half-Life under wine... (I get the exact same fps in Windows as Linux)

    At some point the "Free as in beer" community is going have realize that attacking companies doing good things with software is not in their best intrest. If it keeps happening, the only stuff we will have left are sourceforge/freshmeat type software depositories.

    Except that MySQL makes their money from support of MySQL, and up until recently it wasn't GPL'd I beleive.

    As for Eazel, they were planning to sell services. And, sorry, for the average Unix user, Nautilus was underpowered. (Though it does look pretty)

    So, what companies are we attacking? One that broke the GPL after their own liscence was revoked, and Microsoft. Hmm...

    It's also EXACTLY how jabber works. Jabber even uses your MX record... Right down to the recomendation that you use your email address user name as your jabber name.

    Umm... If I have your IP, I can find your ISP. Usually I can figure out what city you are in. I'm sure the tiny bit of extra information isn't going to make a hill of difference.

    I'm sure I am not the only one here who is sick of the .com sillyness. It's really the only way that can scale. Can you imagine the mess we are going to be in in 5 years when most personal domains look like dfghifuhiug.com because it's they are the only ones free?
