  1. You are missing the point on First 1.1Mpixel 192MB SmartPhone · · Score: 1

So lets look at my options right now:

    Cellphone with sucky games.
    Cellphone with sucky web browser.
Cellphone with a sucky mp3 player.

The point here, even though most people miss it, is that one day, the "sucky" will be removed from your statement.

Manufacturers have to start somewhere. Someone has to buy it because either they think it is cool now, or they feel the investment will help get them to where they want to go.

I thought the Philips Nino was cool for it's time. It sucked, but it was headed in the right direction. Same with the Zaurus. I purchased both and used them as best I could.

    Remember the Newton?

It is only logical that as the technology gets better, more features will be backed into smaller spaces making this sort of "event" (new tech in old applications) even more commonplace.

Remember, unlike the /. community, the general population is a bunch of dummies when it comes to tech (not their fault, just a fact). They will complain that their print quality is low.

Photographers, artists, etc. demand proper color quality and go to great lengths to achieve it. Putting an expiration date on the ink is actually a good thing. Not allowing it to be overridden is a bad thing.

Like meat, does it magically change into death ridden, bug infested slime the day after the "Sell By" date? I don't think so, but it should make you start to think about using it soon.

  15. My Canon does this, sort of... on Solid-State DV Camcorder · · Score: 1

How many times have you been invited to a friend's house to watch home videos and were bored to tears?

I personally think the solution is what my Canon S45 does (and many other cameras do as well) which is to take 3 minute max segments of video.

Why? Because it makes you take what's important, no just what's happening (because most of life is pretty boring).

Granted, 3 minute limit is a little sort when filming a song at a concert, but it does make you think more wisely about what you are doing with an end result of some very targeted videos.

I don't think so. The #1 use for everyone I know who has a TiVo is manipulating LIVE tv (pause, rewind, etc.). You are not going to get that with the setup you propose.

The recording functionality (wishlists, season pass, etc.) is really nice. The HMO is really nice. MRV is really nice, BUT... hitting pause when you've got to take a leak is priceless.

Of course, then the above phrase will be that the size of future computers will be limited to their component's antennas.

Maybe the newspaper article I read (some 15 years ago now) was "spicing" it up a bit, but even now, a search on the web seems to confirm that Clarke had no idea what Kubrick was doing with the end of the movie.

there's just about one person who can make movies out of Clarke's books just the way they are meant to be, and that is Kubrick

Tell that to Clark. IIRC, towards the end of 2001, Kubrick and Clark disagreed with the direction of the movie and Clark threw his hands up and Kubrick went off in a different direction (although, it wasn't that nice of an exchange from what I remember).

It was still an excellent movie, Clark wrote a great book and Kubrick did a great job, but it just wasn't all rosey.

  24. Ok, reality check... on Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama going Hollywood? · · Score: 3, Interesting

The trilogy was awesome, and I hope the movie is on par with Clarke's 2001!"

First of all, I, too thought the trilogy was good. But, as with most trilogies, it got worse as it went on. And, as with _2001: The Movie_, it paled in comparison to the book, especially when Kubrik and Clark started to disagree towards the end.

I am hoping that this will be a great movie, just like I am hoping that the Matrix II will be great. I can only keep my fingers crossed and my hopes not too high to minimize the disappointment.
