I can't reach the article (being/.ed?) to read it but I always thought that data transfered over wire at about.77 the speed of light. I guess if you knew the exact figure you could use ping but then again if you knew the exact figure you would already know the speed of light. Maybe the article will give some insight into this...when I can actually read it.
The easiest way to catch a large portion of NAT users is to just scan for a web interface. I have limited experience with the Linksys Router sold at Best Buy etc...but I think the web interface remains 'enabled'. This would catch all the 'inexperienced' NAT users which is probably who this policy is targeted at anyways. It is sort of like security policies at most companies. They take the precautions necessary to keep the low-level crackers/kiddies out.
This better get modded as Informative......Is this guy aware of large sections of Pennslyvania where no electricity is used? I also know of several places in Indiana that have a large Amish community. Seriously if he is worried about his electo-medical condition why doesn't he move to a remote part of Montana. Errr wait all of Montana is remote.
Maybe its just me but should a comment that almost exactly repeats what the linked article said be modded up to 5 and called informative? Seems a "Hey you idiots" or "Duh!" would be a more appropriate thing to say then "Informative".
Why should anybody feel sorry for the land down under when a large percentage of the rest of us still don't have the availability of broadband. Or had it at one time and then through bankrupt companies etc...have lost it. If you want to feel sorry for somebody feel sorry for people who are starving and don't even know what a computer is.
Note that the piece is largely theoretical -- I've found consistently better prices on the web,.....as well as obscure DVDs which I couldn't find locally anyhow
Just because you could find a better deal online for your Anime Porn-o doesn't mean that this article is largely theoretical. Its just another instance of/.'ers thinking they are mainstream and the modern-day internet should revolve around them.
So when will AOL purchase Nintendo and start battling MS on the console gaming front? Are there any other companies that they could purchase to start a battle here? I haven't heard much about Sega lately and I don't think even the mighty AOL has the power to uproot playstation from Sony.
You make a great point. The average-consumer cares more about quantity then quality when deciding to purchase equipment like this. They don't have the commitment to research each device before they go and buy it. They walk into Best Buy/Circuit City compare boxes and see what has more crap in it. This is how compaq/hp actually (use to) compete in the low-end pc market. They give you tons of crap (scanner/printer...) with no concern for the quality.
Anybody have any tech info on how by just giving a copy to your buddy the software stops you from playing it EVEN if you are using napster's software to play it.
People need Word for the majority of text documents like they need Internet Explorer for most of their web browsing. Most computers that consumers purchase come with Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer already installed. Now if this is the first time you used a computer what would you use? You would use what is already there because you don't know any better. Now when you come back to your computer the second time what are you going to use? Your going to use Microsoft Word and/or Internet Explorer because thats what you already know how to use. This battle has already been lost. Why would any new or current Microsoft Word user change products when everybody around them is using Microsoft word?
This is just a guess but I'm going to assume that the major DVD companies have the factories and necessary equipment to efficiently produce the consoles. Whereas Nintendo/Sony who only release a new console every couple of years have to invest a large amount of capital to produce one product.
If it is true that bands do all of their own work then why do all the 'big/popular' bands have record contracts? The labels must be adding some sort of value or you would see good independent artists have the same success, airtime, and distribution as Britney Spears and the backdoor boys.
And you thought microsoft was going to miss out on P2P??? Think again, they have a hand in the release of PressPlay a NEW napster-clone. Check out betanews for all the details.
Can't decide whats better...having to use.NAP or.WMP (Thats windows media player files for you linux-only people)
Do people realize that the best way to make large sums of money from your music is to get signed by a record label and have them do all your promoting etc....
There is a reason that Independent artists are not as well-known as artists that signed with a record company.
Artists have to make a decision, sign with the mutually hated (by both fan and artist) label or stay independent and fight for every dollar and bit of advertising that they can.
Some of the more popular artists have gone on to create their own music labels. IMHO these are the people you should be supporting with your dollars.
I don't think by asking this question he should be deemed unworthy of securing satellites, instead you should consider it going the extra mile by asking several million? nerds how they would approach the situation. Now if he relied on/. as his primary tool for the succesful completion of his job related duties then I think I want his job.
Did you ever consider that maybe people shun you because your a computer geek? I once thought I was in your situation at a company. Everybody that I worked around seemed to look down upon me and uninterested in talking to me on a professional level. My first instinct was that because I was so mucher younger they were ignoring me. But about a month or so later when all the other 'young' interns starting working the people I tried to talk to engaged the other interns in conversation on a daily basis and even after work. My final assumption was that I was too geeky to fit in with most of the non-IT crowd.
The problem with getting your degree is getting the general education classes out of the way. Any 'geek' could pass all the CS classes and other tech related stuff but having to take english, communication etc etc requires you to stay for more then the 1-2 years needed to complete all the CS classes.
My suggestion is to check out 'online' universities that offer a large percentage of their classes over the internet. This way you can keep working and do your homework and class related stuff in the evenings. Maybe the consulting firm would let you work part-time.
Another option is to enroll in a university test-out of as many classes as you can and then transfer to an online university as described above.
Your major problem is not going to be understanding what is being taught it will be the homework and class work that will be assigned. Such as write a 5 page paper about Bill Gates and then do your math homework and then do that other assignment and then meet with your 'team' to finish this project.
IBM Thinkpads are about as rough and tough as they come. (without buying the indestructible laptops featured here a long while back) I work at a LARGE general contracting firm and all of our field personell use IBM Thinkpads for their work on-site. A building that is under construction is NOT a healthy place for a laptop. They go through the worst of it. Large Amounts of dust, being dropped, being thrown in a work truck with 3 guys all wearing steel toed boots. And they physically outlast their 'technological' use. (ie: they are slow and out of date before they break)
The one complaint I have is the screens are not as sharp or big as they could be but on the other hand if they made them any bigger it would just increase the chance of the screen cracking exponentially.
Now on to dell desktops. You mentioned Dell Optiplex as having lots of problems and being useless. Did you ever consider you were getting what you paid for? Dell has no reason to offer 100% customer satisfaction and problem-free operation to somebody who purchases their low-end equipment. Our entire company uses Dell Dimension PC's with almost trouble-free operation. 90% of the problems that we deal with our user-related. (see my post about cameras on cell phones being used for tech support)
I think we still have some old Dell 266's being used because the user hasn't complained about it not working. Its sad but the people that don't complain and bother us don't get the newest equipment.

UWB sounds so amazing it reminds of the /. story like two days ago about free energy spewing from a little shack in Ireland.

Couldn't they hear the buzz when you turned on the high-voltage power line? Or maybe I'm the only person that can hear/feel it.....

How are you suppose to impress non-techies with your server room, when it sounds nothing like a 747 preparing to take off?

Seems the 'media' isn't interested in covering the new napster.
If he wanted to make money he would just sell it to AOL/TW. Sort of like what happen to Winamp, Netscape, and probably others that I can't think of.

Do you think you could put more then one tag in the same bill? Or swap the transmitter in bills? Or even 'flash' the chip and change its history.
