I hate all these dumb posts that say: "this pointless competition between GNOME and KDE is only holding LINUX back."
Funny, because competition between GNOME and KDE is *EXACTLY* what has made both GNOME and KDE so mature and stable.
Why don't you send this kind of messages to gnome-devel-list or kde-devel-list?
I'm sure you'll hear a lot of things you don't expect (such as that the GNOME vs KDE war does not exist).
I think from the level of people who make decisions about what programming languages to use on commercial projects (this includes me), the technical distinctions between Java and C# are of little concern: the languages are so similar that they are basically interchangeable. What matters is who supports it, what libraries are available, how mature are the implementations, whether it's a single-vendor or mult-vendor solution, how well it integrates with the platform, and how many programmers are available.
For pure Windows programmers, C# wins there and will probably be picked up by lots of VB and VisualC++ programmers. But people who live in that world are already not using Java. For everybody else, Java seems to win hands down. I think C# will neither be a complete failure nor will it do much harm to Java.
Well, ok, it's either copy protection or the 1992 law they use to make a few bucks, obviously. I have this feeling that they will lose much more by trying to enforce copy protection (and by giving up that law, possibly) than just letting things go this way. Just think about it: you can circumvent copy protections -- that should be quite clear by now -- but you can't circumvent compulsory taxes so easily:-)
Along side this is a question i've had for a while: why, after paying this "tax" on blank media, have i not been considered to have paid for the copies i have made (or will make)? Since it is assumed that i will use my blank media for music copies, why is it wrong for me to then use my blank media for copies of music?
I don't know about Linux, but there is active development of NetBSD (NetBSD/hpcarm) that runs on Jornada 525. I have not tried it, though, so I'm not sure of the current status. Here is the web page: www.netbsd.org/Ports/hpcarm .
There is also a guy (in Germany I think) named Keuchel Rainer that has ported lots of UNIX-type tools to Windows CE (focusing on Jornada 720). This includes many command line tools such as tar, telnet, gzip, rsh, etc.. plus Perl (!) and an X Server (!!). Perl seems to work well, but aparently thare are a few limitations due to the WinCE operating system, but I have not had any problems yet, probably because I still a newbie when it comes to Perl:-) The X server also works well (although a little slow) and includes some ported X apps, such as twm, xeyes, xedit, xcalc, and xpdf. I have not yet tried it with remote X apps, but i'm sure it works. He has also ported emacs to CE! Check it out: www.rainer-keuchel.de(click on Software at the bottom).
There is also a Yahoo! winCE dev group (started by Mr. Rainer: groups.yahoo.com/group/wince-devel

In order to create a successful wireless platform you're going to need good hardware.
Handspring doesn't have it. They've got a 33Mhz 16-bit Motorola Dragonball processor. It can (slowly) serve the most basic mobile data needs (email, instant messaging), play a couple of neat little games, and be a pretty effective organizer, but that's about it.
Palm OS devices are stuck at 8 or 16MB's of total capacity, which sure as hell means you won't be storing any large files (movies, MP3s, etc) on it. They need modern hardware, like an ARM-derived platform, to overcome these inherent limitations. (I know, Palm says it's working on it, but that was supposed to materialize how long ago now??)
Also, another hardware problem is the resolution... the Prism looks awesome in the photos, but remember that the resolution is ONLY 160x160 -- the same as the Palm IIIc. For those that have seen the IIIc, you will remember that it has a very grainy resolution.
Although the Prism does have a higher color depth, and uses TFT color, unless the screen has a tighter dpi, you will probably find that it is only marginally better than the IIIc. Also, remember that it is thicker and heavier than a regular Visor.
I'm very interested in seeing a real one up close, in both indoor light AND outdoor light. As far as color goes outside, I have only seen 2 color LCDs that really work well outside -- the Sony hybrid LCD on their digital camera, and the Compaq IPAQ. The rest wash out completely.
What if you don't have a driver's license? Are you considered a terrorist? Are you going to be forced to get a driver's license? Geez... if every american drove one car for 2 hours every day... after a year, the ozone layer would be a thing of the past:))))

Everything I've heard up until now has convinced me that Lindows is for sure a modified version of Wine, with some eye candy added and all this backed up by a team of PR goons.Also, not releasing the source speaks for itself... Up until now, Lindows seemed like a good candidate for SatireWire's vaporware list, but they might have something to show after all. Also, the price is unbelievable! Who would pay to run buggy microsoft software on an (almost certainly)buggy emulator? I'd rather buy a windows license:) The bottom line is: instead of trying to emulate windows, try to help developing native linux applications. Like Staroffice and Gimp for starters.

I don't miss Windows at all, and the myth that you "can't get applications for the Mac" is such a load of cr@p. In fact, the new Office for Mac OS X is, in my opinion, much BETTER than the Windows version. Networking has been faster, too, and that's important to us. You'd never believe it, but it's cheaper too. No more calling for technical support or having someone on duty to fix problems with our systems. You just don't need it with a Mac because the hardware and software is so well integrated. The machines themselves have been CHEAPER for us. $1199 iMacs as clients and G4s to handle some of the heavier loads. It's worked great. And by the way... that 22" Apple flat screen is not only beautiful for working with, but it impresses customers too. I know it seems like a detail, but people have gotten the impression we're an upscale successful business because they see those screens and comment on them. I know I seem like a troll ranting about this or that, but I just want to get the word out, because I'm a very pleased Apple customer... and I'm laughing at myself for ever having used Windows for so long.

In fact, the new Office for Mac OS X is, in my opinion, much BETTER than the Windows version.
