  1. I've got a recalled modle on Compaq Recalls Notebook AC Adapters · · Score: 1

I've had an Armada V300 for 5 months (happily running Mandrake 8.0), and I have had the AC adaptor get hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold a few times. It only seems to be a problem when it's charging the battery. I'll be swiftly replacing the thing so I can sleep. (The inside of my house was destroyed by an electrical fire a year ago, I still am bothered tremensly by my cats playing with plastic bags)

  2. Re:Big Problem. on Software Distribution via Multicast? · · Score: 1

I thought about this a bit a while ago. There's a farily simple soultion to this, all you have to do is set up a large number of low bandwidth channels broadcasting from diffrent offests. For example, you setup 64 16kbps streams all broadcasting in a loop in diffrent offsets. This way, everyone can get the full potential of thier bandwidth. Joe Modem user connects to one or two streams, while Leet Cable Dude connects to about half of them, and finishes much sooner because he's downloading from many channels at once. This also helps Joe Modem user, because he just has to wait for one of the other streams to catch up with the one he was downloading from, and in the mean time he can download from another stream which has data he hasn't gotten yet.

Alternitvy, you could split the file into many chuncks and have a seperate broadcast stream for each chunk.

It ought not to be to hard to setup somthing like this with a bit of creative programming.

I could work much more efficely if my computer didn't crash every other hour. I guess this is why I use Linux on my "work" (schoolwork actualy...) laptop. The only time I've had my work interupted on it was a battery failure.

I've been using Mandrake since 7.1 and love it. It's amazing the improvements that are made between releases. When I took my box to an installfest put on by the local LUG it took the guys there an hour to get the sound working right with my on-board chip. With Mandrake 8.0 it just worked. I now have a slightly old (500MHz/128MB) laptop that I ended up wiping windows from. It's been upgraded to XFree86 4.1.0 + KDE 2.2, and runs great. I am hoping to upgrade it and my desktop box tonight. Hopefully I'll be able to convert my ext2 to ext3.

Perhaps Windows should have an EYE-DEE-TEN-TEE protection switch which is enabled by default and requires passing a computer knowlage test (built into wndows of course) to disable.

Linux of course already has somthing like this, it consists of GUI config tools and reminding the user not log in as root. That's one of many things I like about Linux, it can baby you a bit at first, but as you learn, you start to not use the babying it provides as much.

I still don't belive in encouraging Joe User to run Linux because Joe User doesn't know squat about computer security, and doesn't understand the danger of script kiddies with password crackers. It just doesn't sink in that although nobody would ever guess that their password is "rzdx" there are plenty of people that would love to use a password cracker to break it and abuse their computer.
