Thankfully, I'm in Canada and not bound by retarded US laws. /. is, though, so I'm not gonna post verbatin what the patch is.

The gist of this security patch is to fix driver vulnerabilities. It fixes several of them, not one of them is exploitable by a remote user. They all require the hardware in question to be connected to exploit the driver vulnerability, and they all involve allowing people to write to kernel memory space. In other words... they could be used to nuke a linux box by a local user (why not just 3-finger salute, I know not), but the moment you reboot the problem is fixed anyway.

Can't compare these jokers to Dmitri Skylarov. Skylarov was doing something that's allowed by Russian law, and frankly shouldn't be illegal in America. These jokers were running credit card scams which aren't allowed at all, no matter where you go.

The Russians objected to the FBI's means of gathering the evidence, not to the prosecution for the crimes themselves. The FBI "hacked" the computers by luring the Russians to the USA under the guise of a job interview, and installing keylogging software on their PC's as they were invited to hack a virtual network that the FBI set up. Using the keylogging software, the FBI was able to get their passwords, and use it to remotely access their computers in Russia. Using this evidence, they were extradited to the USA for prosecution.

What they did could be called Entrapment, and it could be called Espionage. But I still have to laugh that the l337 h4xx0rz from Russia were dumb enough to allow it to happen. They were running unsecured boxes at home, and for some unearthly reason decided to remotely access those boxes while partaking in an experiment to hack a virtual network in Seattle. Idiots. They get no sympathy at all from me.

With the US gov't cutting NASA's budget every year, and the Russians talking about scuttling their contribution to ISS, it's unlikely that much space exploration will be happening much more within my lifetime.

It should be noted that in some languages, money is written as 50$ instead of $50. I see that error most often in parts of Canada bordering Quebec, and from francophones, because in French (Canadian French, at least) that's how money is supposed to be written.

A fission rocket is a simple and safe system that uses a nuclear reactor to heat up a liquid such as hydrogen to create thrust. Unfortunately, "nuclear" and "fission" have been dirty words in this country for the last three decades. Despite the fact that nuclear propulsion is the best and safest way to fly major missions beyond Earth orbit, NASA stopped its development back in 1972 to put nearly every penny it had into the development of the shuttle. That was a terrible decision. At that point we had successfully tested nuclear rockets in the open air in Nevada, engines that could be operated with high thrusts for long durations--the key to entering the solar system.

None of the Presario line of computers have anything but Windows, but if you move over to the Deskpro, iPAQ, and Prolinea lines of products from them, you'll see everything from DEC Rainbow/OS (years ago) to Linux to Solaris to Compaq Tru64 Unix. They even have a tech. support department for Linux/Unix on these systems, with a call centre in Hull, Quebec.

The difference is that the product that's marketted to consumers doesn't have these as options. But tech. support won't stop you from installing another operating system. They just don't offer any support for them.
