But I'm afraid they'll make up with Microsoft and not us.
McNealy will be in a padded room before that could happen:
Lest we forget, McNealy was part of the "Legion of Doom" with Jobs, and Ellison back in the 90's before Jobs defected over to dark side so Apply could have a better office suite.
This is a 133Mb advert and the download is even set-up in such a way that you can't use a download manager without some tweaking.

PLE is not supposed to be the non-commercial version. They make a separate one for non-commercial use (Colleges, schools, hoobyists, etc..) This one is full featured, but its not free. PLE was created because people wanted to learn Maya but didn't want to grab a pirated copy and tick off Alias. Alias did them a favor by creating it.
News Flash!: To all you guys that think you can just simply "Try out Maya" like its some easy piece of Windows software. Get real. Maya's learnign curve is so steep only the dedicated ever learn it, only the gifted master it, and only the insane:) develop for it.
Those who would like to see how it would work with a game, find an artist who is learning it. They'll probably do a better job and it can then leave you to doing what you're good at.
Keep in mind: These words are for those who are unsure about Maya of whether its worth the time commitment. There are others (you know who you are), who can simply ignore these words and go back to working on their MEL scripts.:)
Well, since it's only one person the spammers are targeting I'll agree with you.
After all, a paper cut is but a simple annoyance.
Now if it was more....
1000: paper cuts would bring interest to the item in question.
10,000: paper cuts would draw attention. Possibly calling the practice into question.
100,000: paper cuts would cause politicians into notice.
1,000,000: ??
10,000,000: Oh you mean spammers can send to 10,000,000 people in a single second? Oh dear...:-\
Think back to Superman 2, (ah Christopher Reeves) or more recently (Office Space) They justifed the crime by saying they were only stealing the rounding error.
Kudos to your Java knowledge. While my knowledge of C++ is good and mine of the STL has recently improved, my Java knowledge is only to the extent that I realize that its only a falicy: (anything Java can do, C++ can do more efficiently.)
Ironically, an IBM consultant was the one that changed my thinking...
Argh! I hate it when people ask this question! I heard it asked to him on more than one occasion. I dislike it only because it shows a lack of knowledge on the asker's part.
C++ and Java are two very different languages that just happens to share syntax. A good C++ programmer is not necessarily a good Java programmer and vice versa. In fact, its probably harder to be a good Java programmer if you already have a good amount of experience with C++ (an argument Bjarne himself makes for those going from c to C++).
C++ and Java are two different languages that are best used for different purposes. If you don't believe then try: dynamic server pages in C++, hardware-accelerated 3D gaming in Java, platform-independent applications in C++, or embedded systems in Java.
Just because a program _can_ be written in a certain langauge doesn't mean it's the best option.
Guess Taco thought his could slip this one by us on a Sunday Morning, when all of us are still recovering from our hangover's from the night before...:-/
Oh yeah, (STUPID, STUPID) this is slashdot. We're still _coding_ from the night before!
Ok, I'm gonna get hurt for asking this. but I got some karma to burn...:)
I use Visual Studio.Net . There. I said it. I'm sorry.
It's just that with the 2003 release (last version only lasted a year?) they did finally get (mostly) up to ANSI C++. I like using the debugger. It makes things easier on a single screen. Also, it's little 'annoyances' can get handy if you got a lot of data structures to keep track of.
Ok, having said all that. It pisses me off that I can use it for Java nor have anything close on a platform other than Windoze. Someone PLEASE show me something near as good that:
1. Compatible with C++/Java/Some scripting languages 2. Intagrated editor/debugger 3. Works well with compiler 4. Multi-platform (or at least Linux for god's sake!)
College student seeks help before he becomes corrupted completely!
But most (if not ALL) modern university programs in technology require a lot of group projects
Overgeneralization. Parent should get modded down on that alone. You are making the assumption that every college with a computer science program is a good one. My school only started requiring a major design project to graduate.
In addition, anyone whose worked in large teams who's the line between a small group and a large one is five people. How many people can say their group projects in college had 5+ people?
Besides. I've had 4.0 students do nothing and get good grades. We call it "leeching" here. It comes from the idea that the guy that his other group members won't complain if he does nothing because they know their grade will be that much better on his reputation alone.
So, those 4.0 students MUST work well in groups, else they would be closer to 3.0 or 2.5.
Do you even realize what it takes to get a degree? Think about how classes would have to be involved to take a 4.0 to 3.0 or 2.5. 25 to 40% of all the classes the student takes would have to change from A to C for this to occur! Now ask your self, how likely is this to happen???

"Ridge Hall Computer assistance; may I help you?" "Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect." "What sort of trouble?" "Well I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away." "Went away?" "They disappear." "Hmmm. so what does you screen look like now?" "Nothing." "Nothing?" "It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type." "Are you still in WordPerfect or did you get out?" "How do I tell?" "Can you see the C: prompt of the screen?" "What's a sea-prompt?" "Never mind can you move your cursor around the screen?" "There isn't any cursor; I told you, it won't accept anything I type." "Does your monitor have a power indicator?" "What's a monitor?" "It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV." "Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?" "I don't know?" "Well. then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?" "Yes, I think so." "Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall." "Yes, it is." "When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"
"No." "Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable." "Okay, here it is" "Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."
"I can't reach it." "Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?" "No." "Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?" "Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle - it's because it's dark." "Dark?" "Yes the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming from the window." "Well, turn on the office light then." "I can't." "No, why not?" "Because there's a power failure." "A power....... a power failure? Aha, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"
"Well, yes I keep them in the closet." "Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."
"Really? Is it that bad?" "Yes, I'm afraid it is." "Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?" "Tell them you're too @#!%ing stupid to own a computer."

Linux is primarily used on headless RENDER FARMS
I can think of a few that would beg to differ:
1, 2, and 3.
Of course, given your statements; this info is pretty much useless to you as demonstrated by your statements.
1. Suns and SGI stations were used in 1997. They got old. They were replaced with Intel/Linux and saved a slew of money in the process.
2. They love linux because they can hack it up as much as they want. It does what they want and nothing else.
3. Microsoft tax anyone? Why pay it if you don't have to?
