But if it's policy (written policy) and it's not in conflict with laws then there can't really be any negative outcomes. You just point to the policy and say, 'this is our policy'.
Handy if you are a corporate attorney.
PPARs have been under investigation for a variety of ailments for some time by pharma companies (specifically, diabetes; some of these drugs were recalled from the market). Whether or not this discovery will translate into an actual effective drug is not even remotely close to being established.
Seems like every week we get one of these "cure for cancer" stories. It's great that the research is ongoing, but the breathless headlines are premature.
Sen. Boxer supports this because it will enrich her constituents in CA. I think this is the most repugnant form of vote buying / pandering that we see in politics. This is the vulgar spectacle that politics have become - if you are under the impression that there is a difference between any politicians, think again.
All politicians are criminals. Thus, it really doesn't make any difference if we use e-voting or rock stacking. The system promotes only the most corrupt and reprehnsible people to run for public office.
Given a choice between being burned alive or shot in the head, I suppose I would choose none of the above.
The best game music I can think of was included in games like Doom2 (e.g., the midi score to "Barrels of Fun") or the intro blast from Duke Nukem 3D. When I get a game nowadays with some crap band blaring, I go straight into the options and shut it off.
A politician is nothing more than an empty suit that travels from fundraiser to fundraiser. There is no real understanding of any issue, technology included, at a deeper level than bumper sticker sloganeering.
A person who gets involved in politics may begin as an ideologue on one or more issues, but with the massive amount of issues that a politician must deal with, it's difficult if not impossible to keep up with them all. Thus, interest groups can influence pols by aligning with political parties to affect whatever outcomes they desire.
Unfortunately, as long as there is an expectation that a government should be involved in every issue, this is the way things will be. A perfectly reasonable solution to the problem would be to ignore these buffoons, and the problem will eventually go away. At the very least, vote for someone who will be ineffectual for a couple of years and routinely toss them out. Or, just vote for a drunken pirate for the laugh value.
That's what you get when there is a monopoly on the CableCARDs. If there were commercially available consumer versions of these then the price would be more reasonable from the outset. Unlike other posters seem to think, there will be no real reason for these to ever decrease in price, since there is essentially a cartel of suppliers who can set the price at whatever level they please.
Honestly, what proportion of the populace do you think would (or could, even)"work on independant and alturistic projects which in theory could be of benefit to soceity" or "allocate study time for the sake of pure learning"?
I would be shocked if given the extra time that you are describing that most people would do anything with it other than goof off. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but to pretend that there are some high and mighty ideals as you describe is really quite a stretch.
End users HATE Lotus Notes. So by bundling openoffice with it, you get a "crummy by association" reputation. Terrible.
I know the IT geeks love them some Lotus Notes (I guess the IBM salesmen know where all the good strip clubs are?), but honestly, it is simply the worst application ever conceived. Pine (hell, even emacs) is a better email application, and there is nothing the crappy database stuff that could not be better implemented using web based technologies.
Think of it as an employment application. I am sure that if you provided something meritorious that either Google or someone else would provide you with a chance for something gainful. Not bad if you are a student with a bit of time on your hands...
If you aren't getting emails that you are expecting, you would know about it. This would piss you off and you would find another way of getting the messages.
If you aren't getting emails that you aren't expecting, oh well, that's spam.
I disagree with the assertion that the market would not kill off this idea. If you aren't getting emails you expect (as has happened to me in the past) you will seek an alternative solution. If it's really important, there's this device called a telephone whereby you can actually speak with someone else in urgent situations.
My kids love the gamecube, and I can lord it over them as a not so veiled threat.
It's alive and kicking at my house. I do not plan to replace it anytime soon. We get a game maybe 2x per year. The games are fun for everyone to play, same as the older nintendo games.
In general, I agree (this is a fundamental tenet of economics). However, it's really about the branding in this specific case. The people who are buying ipods are trendy hipsters. Your run of the mill trendy hipster isn't going to want to be seen with a bo-bo case covering their premium priced ipod, so they will pay for the brand.
The core of fanatics here don't really pay attention to the prices, so long as the brand is there. If it has the logo, then it sells. It's the same principle as designer jeans. Sure, you can buy a dozen cheap pairs, but those aren't cool.
Believe it or not, a company exists to make money. With the cachet of the Apple brand already driving the sales of the ipod, why not increase the booty a bit by getting in on the extras?
Often what I notice in my work is that you get mgmt that are just screaming for the information, with no apparent recognition of the benefit of a process to create the information. Therefore, everyone is scrambling to create the same crap for the same mgrs, and it's a complete clusterf*ck.
I think it's a characteristic of 90%+ of managers to assume that the people who are actually doing the work are incompetent, rather than to assume that they are professionals who will get the work done. Perhaps this actually is the case, I don't know, but this is a real drag on anyone who is quasi-competent in a large corporation.
I am sure that it's the Blu-Ray drive that's responsible for the price. Seriously.

Are people threatening bodily harm? If not, then I can not see a "requirement" for laws at all.

No, games are not the next MTV.
RTP, NC is in no way inferior to New York or California.

Because, in the long run, we are all dead.

Discuss the veracity of this story against that backdrop.

what about gold as money? or silver? or another precious metal? Weight in gold could be used as money without a state issuer, no?
My sentiments exactly, FWIW.

All the while lining the pockets of good ol' Mike Dell.
I'll keep building my own, thanks.
