and let the business environment pass them by to a point where they go out of business or get absorbed into some other company who fires everyone. 100% job loss later is better than 10% now, right?
It's too bad for the people who are losing their jobs, but there are always opportunities for talented, resilient individuals.
I for one would be interested to know if this is enforceable in an actual court. The GPL is legally sound (so I have heard from lawyers), but could this provision pass the actual muster of a bought and paid for legal system?
Never had a tivo, I refuse to pay the outrageous monthly fee.
I do have a mythtv box that I love to death. The price is right, and it's not larded with DRM, etc. That suits my needs.
For other people who are not so concerned, why would I go to the expense of purchasing this + subscription fee when the cable company will give me one that (as far as Joe User knows / cares) does the same thing for $3.50 per month. Tivo can not compete, they are as good as dead.
That really, really, really doesn't seem like an item that should even register on the worry list.
Aliens surmise that radio signals can be intercepted and decoded by individuals light years away and then go to the trouble of sending a signal encoded with a virus of some sort? Someone needs to get out more often, methinks.
I would be willing to build one for you, if the price is right.
Alternatively, you could get the "reference" knoppmyth hardware. I am by no means an expert in configuring Linux systems and I have had a working mythtv box for almost 1 year. I built the system from soup to nuts (order parts, assemble hardware, install, test, deploy) in 1 week vacation around the holidays last year. If you have two bits of knowledge, it would take even less time.
There are a couple of companies that sell these pre-built, but they are expensive, to the point of being in the price range of a Windows Media Center box with similar specs. The obvious advantage of mythtv is no DRM, etc., but you would need to know how to troubleshoot if something went wrong. Without setting it up, that would be potentially bewildering...
until this is available! I can't count the number of times that I have been flipping thru a book and wished I could use the search function, only to realize that it doesn't work in meatspace. Searching is up to me, using old fashioned tools, like the table of contents or the index!
I would be much more concerned about the manipulation of the news footage we use to obtain information about what's going on in the world. Those who control that medium, control public opinion and can pacify the masses, whilst marginalizing dissent.
As for movies, these are art - as the artist sees fit, they can muck about with their creations. Ownership though, can be a little fuzzy, if for example the rights are owned by a company and not an individual.
Guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Or you can move the goalpost in the middle of the game. That's easier.

In other news, the sky is blue.
I can't wait! (Omits comment re: warlord overlords)
you are annoying me... that knock at your door is the fbi, sucka. prepare for some jailtime!

Tivo is soooo out of bidnezz. No way can they compete with Comcast, TWC, etc.
mmmm...... chicklet keyboards.... mmmm....
Do they even exist anymore? I thought Frank Black rode his hovercraft off into the sunset.
but, but, ed is the standard editor, dammit!
Sheesh, kids.
Jeez, you would think that you could just unload the piece of junk on ebay.
FWIW, my 11 year old and 5 year old can use my MythTV box.
Online advertising - is it good or is it whack?

Mmmmmm... vapor...
Only way more expensive...
And encumbered with DRM...
No thanks!
I guess what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
It's not like you could ever not buy into the hype and let the things rot on the shelf by not going out to buy them on day one!

Kind of a moot point when you lose the email address.
