  4. Re:Obligatory Palm question on Dell Handhelds Released · · Score: 5, Interesting

Basically palm introduced their PDA a few years ago and they were good at the time, but they've gone nowhere since. PPC's are a generation later and are more powerful, have better software, faster, more memory and are more compatible with the software people use on their computers. Basically the palm you can buy now is identical to the one you could get four years ago except it's in a new box and has a bit more memory maybe. Because the pocket pc things are "bigger" machines, a lot more of the interesting software has been developed for them. The new palms look a bit better but they still seem rather outdated compared with their competition. Their new OS6 when it comes out next year looks interesting though.

Couldn't agree ... less. I seriously hate the way the BBC pumps my licence fee into projects that the majority of licence payers have no access to. Well fine, but who exactly are those people? Everyone in the UK has access to those channels. Ok, so you've got to buy some equipment but you have to buy a TV to watch BBC1 and I don't see anyone complaining that that's unfair.

I don't think it's sad, it's just evolution of language. I think that it fairly clear what it means and it can be more convenient to phrase things that way so even if it's not the traditional way to say something it's a decent enough innovation. It has nothing to do with math skills, it's to do with English language usage, and that changes all the time.

  15. My concerns with biometric "passwords" on Iris Scanners in Canadian Airports · · Score: 5, Insightful

My concern with all of these schemes is that if someone gets hold of your biometric data it may be passible to spoof the device in some way. At least with a password you can change your password if someone gets hold of it, but with these schemes, if someone gets hold of your data there is nothing you can do about it. Probably not an issue for this application, but I see it suggested for things like ATM machines or access to building (where swipe cards are used now) where they are used unattended. I expect that if these devices become widespread then someone will build a device to spoof them. and once someone has got hold of your data there is nothing you can do about it
