forgive me for asking, but i thought Snort was just an intrustion detection system, as i understand it all it does is detect and log intrusions not actually stop them like a firewall does, can i replace my servers firewall with a copy of Snort ?
One of our student programmers wrote some code that lists the IPs snort detects based on its level of severity. He also wrote another page that uses commands on our packetshaper to determine which IPs are creating the most connections, and automatically blocks them at a 5 minute interval.
Do you find that blocking machines with lots of simultaneous connections causes problems with bittorrent clients? (Or is that an intended side effect?:) )
No, I think most legitimate traffic is under 5000 simultaneous connections =). When we see a machine with 10,000 , 20,000 , 30,000 (which has been detected). We know there's a problem =)

While at high school I was aware that there were many different areas of computing, but what made me focus on a degree combining both computer science and electronic engineering was how well they compliment each other. When applying for a place at university, La Trobe courses were listed as my top 4 preferences. I was and still am very impressed with the quality of the course, industry collaboration, the focus on industry-accredited projects, the lifestyle and environment. One of the most important aspects of my undergraduate course was that it focused on making people more employable by providing many opportunities to develop communication, research, practical and team working skills. I completed my undergraduate course last year and immediately found employment as a graduate engineer with Vision Systems Limited. While working for Vision Systems, I decided to pursue a postgraduate qualification by research at La Trobe. Because of La Trobe's commitment to encouraging industry collaboration and research, I was able to arrange to undertake a research topic that was of interest to my employer. Thus, currently I am doing my Master of Engineering by research, while working part time as an engineer. La Trobe is flexible enough to allow me to develop both academically and professionally.
