  1. Doesn't really matter on Following FEMA's Zombie Preparedness Plan Could Land You On Terrorist List · · Score: 2

Although I agree with your (and the GP's) assessment that the fear for terrorism is extremely exaggerated, the statistics you give do not matter much for any person's fear of terrorism. The question is not what the likelihood is of some American dying of terrorism. The question is what my likelihood of dying from terrorism is.

Most people feel they can control lots of those other risks (or make them non-lethal) by caring for their health, eating well, thinking they are a superior driver, etc.
However, they feel they have no control over "death by terrorist" which increases the fear of it by an important factor.

It still not worth all the fuss, but it can explain some of the irrational fear about it.

  4. All names in Asterix and Obelix resemble real word on Asterix and Mobilix Redux · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is actually quite ironic since allmost all names in the Asterix comic series are derived from real words (in French). Asterix comes from 'asterisque' (the * character), Obelix from 'obelisque' (a vertical monument, like a pillar), idefix (the dog) from 'idée fixe' (difficult to translate, something like an unchangeable opinion), assurancetourix (the chief IIRC) from 'assurance touts risques' (an insurance for all damages), etc ...

And now they sue somebody cause a word they use looks like one of the names of their characters. It would be funny if it wasn't so stupid.

  5. Re:WineX on WineX (And Warcraft3) On FreeBSD · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is just silly. If one wants people to use Linux, you've got to eliminate barriers keeping them from doing so. WineX is a solution (although it may not be perfect) for lowering one of the most important barriers: 'Can I still use that Windows app that I use so much when I switch'.
Read this interesting article by Joel Spolsky, about removing barriers for more info.

Furthermore, do you really think there are less people developing OSS because there's WineX. I don't think so, maybe fewer developers will try to rewrite a win application that works perfectly wih WineX, but they will develop something else instead (work enough if you ask me).

  8. Re:Not just anti-Microsoft on Opera, Microsoft, and the Mobile Browser Market · · Score: 4, Informative

Well, if you read the article you will see that they indeed say there are more reasons to choose Opera besides the "they're not MS"-argument. For example the fact that Symbian's OS for mobiles together with Opera is much more 'tweakable' and allows for more personalized software on the phones.

I guess they will (mainly) use the "Microsoft is an evil monopoly"-argument to convince the businness-guys and the other arguments for the tech guys.

  13. Not always Calling Party pays on Calling Cell Phones Could Cost More · · Score: 1

As you said, in Europe the general system is based around the fact the the calling party pays. However, since it's more costly to make international calls and since you do not always know where someone is when you call his cell phone, this system does not always apply when calling cell phones.
In Belgium (and I think in other European countries as well), when you call somebody's cell phone when he's abroad, the caller pays the normal rate for calling a cell phone locally whereas the callee pays the extra charge for the international call.

To make that happen, Microsoft is turning to what some analysts say is a risky strategy. The company is adopting Extensible Markup Language (XML) as a second file format in all Office applications, to enable better data exchange between the productivity suite and back-end software, such as databases.

Although people may be violent, it sure as hell isn't the reason we're the dominating species. As mentioned before, the fact that we can make tools to fight of the animals that are stronger or more violent than us is one of those reasons.
Furthermore, it is clear from history that societies or cultures who have an extended period of peace and stability can achieve the best results (see Pax Romana, Golden age of ancient Greece, etc ...). Violence only leads to more violence, maybe you can ask the Israelites and the Palestinians about it.
