Have you read what the guy has to say before dismissing the theory? Besides, a car accident is not (normally) really a violent situation in the sense that you are confronted with someone that wants to kill/hurt you (yes I know that people can get rather upset when you damage their vehicles so spare me the jokes about that)

I actually meant safe as in "safe for westerners" which is still relatively true. Yes, the Indonesian military aren't a friendly bunch, I've actually heard the locals say that they preferred being colonized by the Dutch to being colonized by the Indonesians (Javanese). When I was there they some fighter jets bombed some villages to suppres some sort of unrest. The Indonesians have a programme called "transmigrasi" in which they encourage people from other parts of indonesia to settle in Papua, one of the goals being to make it a more "indonesian" place.

Hmm, I was born in PNG, it is true that Port Moresby is one of the most dangerous cities in the world and there is a lot of unrest going on in the country (Bougainville etc.). However the Indonesian part (I also lived there for a few years) is relatively safe, basically the Indonesians (Javanese) took over the role of the Dutch as colonizers and (at the time) there was military everywhere.

So called "rogue" states do not necessarily want to attack the usa, they just want to be able to go against the will of the usa without being invaded (or "liberated" if you wish). A negative result of the invasion of Iraq (regardless of any positive ones) is that any nation that might expect to see itself at odds with the usa in the future is now scrambling to aquire nuclear weapons. Non-proliferation is one of the greatest casualties of the iraqi war.

Personally I think missiles "shields" are definitely worth researching, the idea of shooting a rocket with a rocket however seems far too difficult at this point (especially if the attacking rocket tries to evade the defending one). I don't know if there are any other promising technologies to implement rocket shields?

The west really should stop dreaming that western values are universal values and just get its act together or it's going to be one rough awakening.

Hmm, I bought an iPod (mini) a while ago but I am actually quite dissapointed by the interface. The menu/playlist structure seems a bit clunky, the scroll-wheel is nice but it seems that apple was so proud of it that they wanted to operate absolutely everything with it. Also there are many features that would have been useful but simply aren't there (for example you can't create playlists from your song collection, there is no way to search the song library etc.) OTOH the physical design is very nice and some aspects of the scrollwheel are nice. iTunes is a total horror though, if there's one thing I wish there was a good freeware replacement for it (I've tried anapod, not really freeware I know, but that kinda sucks as well). To me it seems that a smart competitor could easily improve the ipod/itunes combo.

Apart from China a lot of the clothing industry does its manufacturing in ex-colonies; Bangladesh, Sri Lanka (ex UK colonies) and Indonesia (ex Dutch colony) to name a few. In essence this shows that there is not necessarily a relationship between a colonial past and the number of sweatshops (yay).

There are a number of differences between the colonization of Africa and Asia by the European powers.

In Asia there usually already was some sort of government by local rulers (maharajas, sultans, petty kings etc.), usually the colonizers let them retain some of their power (if only symbolical). There are two significant things about that, firstly it means that the people already had a history of being governed and secondly it means that the borders were not carved up as randomly (but rather along the old ruler's sphere of influence). Off course the colonizers implemented their own governmental mechanisms but in a sense they just added another layer on top of the existing structures.

I think that in Africa the degree of organization wasn't as large, there were tribal chiefs but not well established kingdoms (off course there are probably exceptions to this, I haven't researched it so much). Therefore the colonizers did not reckon with existing power structures and existing spheres of influence as much as in Asia.

Because of the differences between the way they were colonized and the degree to which they were developed prior to colonization, colonization has had a much more devastating effect on Africa than on Asia.

I haven't had a tele-marketing call since I gave up my fixed line and use a cell-phone exclusively. I don't know why telemarketers don't bother to call me on my cellphone, maybe because it is more expensive, maybe it is more difficult to get the number in the first place or maybe it is that they can't link the number to a certain target audience (e.g. residential area etc.).

Since cellular became a lot cheaper in recent years giving up the fixed line was only a matter of time. Cell is still a bit more expensive on a per minute basis but not having to pay two subscription fees saves a bit of money in the end.
