So, the news of the closure of Webvan never even made it to me, until in the middle of Salladasburg, PA, a borough of 300 with a white barn in the middle that says "Welcome to Salladasburg, Smallest boro in Lycoming County!", a webvan van appeared.

WTF? I thought, Are we getting Webvan service?

No, no. Someone just bought a refrigerated van cuz they thought it looked cool.

  3. Re:Baby talk? I swear at my computer! on Computer Program Learns Baby Talk in Any Language · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well, some of the rules in language are pretty universal. I hesitate to say hard-wired because I can't cite it, but think about it. Every language consists of syllables that add up to words that add up to a complete thought.
That's how an infant learns it. At first, they just babble as they figure out what sounds they can make - naturally, what sounds human language will have in them. Try and think of a language that doesn't have a soft A vowel as English does.

And deaf babies babble too! It is, however, less complex than a non-hearing impaired infant's. That makes for some interesting theories. If a deaf infant can figure out some consonants, something's probably hard-wired.

Pay attention to it! That babbling is nonsense, but eventually nonsense syllables.

What are some first words you can think of? nana. dada. papi. That indicates that they've gotten far enough in development to know that syllables make up words.

Now here's why I think you are right about the computer not "learning like a baby does". A baby can easily pick up what "dada" and "mama" are quick, what is mama gonna do every time the baby says it? This computer won't learn like an infant will, it will learn language as a blind infant would.

  5. Free Media Downloads on Senate Majority Leader Takes On File Sharing · · Score: 2, Interesting

In the article they mention schools giving away free or cheap media downloads.

I go to Penn State. Well, this is good and all - our school used to give away free Napster downloads and now have moved to Ruckus. Well guess what? Every May, after finals, Napster disables your access to your downloads. You can't even stream anymore after the school year ends. And now that they've terminated their contract with Napster, the downloads do nothing at all. Not only that, but good luck getting those downloads to work in anything but Windows Media Player! My MP3s work on anything, including the reason most of it is digitized - to run on my XBox set-top box running XBMC.

So, at least Penn State isn't giving away free or discounted music downloads, they're giving free music rentals. Sorry, but getting a cable modem and using BitTorrent is, and probably always will be more convenient. Sorry, RIAA, you're still fucked.

If you're just scanning pages, it's never going to happen. When you read, you may have to read the same paragraph two or three times in order for it to be clear. This is language we're talking about, writing is an art. You MUST carefully read every single word, as in writing, the author cannot add inflection to his words, much less body language!

Get a book of poetry. No, really! Go to a book store, look at some poetry, and buy a book of it that makes absolutely NO sense to you. Then, continue to read it, whenever you have the chance, until you can explain to yourself exactly what is in the poet's mind. And don't worry if you get stumped along the way - it happens. But you can't ever give up on it. It's art, and not the kind where you throw feces at a canvas and call it Jesus. It has meaning, and its meaning can be extracted if you try hard enough. After all, English is how we communicate to eachother (not throwing feces!)

If you didn't learn that from your teacher, you were the guy in the back of the room during reading class not paying attention when the teacher asked the class to describe the setting of whatever story was being read. Hell, IIRC, that was almost always the first thing the teach wanted us to figure out, all the way through from primary school to when I dropped out.

But then again, this GED holder made it into college, and was reading on such a high level in 8th grade that I didn't have to show up to English anymore. =)

Don't blame your problem on the school system, but good luck getting that mental picture frame working! You don't know what you're missing, even in non-fiction!
