If I understand the agreement correctly, the only thing it affects is virtual machines. You can run SuSE on a Windows based VM and vice versa. Thats it. You would think that deals like this have never existed before. There are TONS of propriatary commercial software that runs on Linux that has a "Only supported on x". For years there was no option other than Red Hat for commercial software on Linux is you wanted support from the software company.

This states that SuSE is the only supported version of Linux running in Windows VM, and that Novell is protected if you are using something like Xen to run Windows on a SuSE box.

Microsoft gets to pick its poison when it comes to Linux running in VMs and Novell gets the antidote.

Oh, I wasn't saying it doesn't exist. Roleplaying is great in EVE. I was mearly stating that its different than most other MMORPG's where there is an actual Avatar running around. It just takes a little bit to get used to. Although, for MUD/MUSHers its not that big of an adjustment

  11. Re:you forgot Ultima Online and Eve on Vanguard Beta In Trouble? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Yeah, I think EVE is the best at battling the grind. There are still grinds that can be done. Grind for money. Grind for standing.

I've played many of the larger MMORPG's out there (UO, EQ1/2, SWG, WoW, and EVE). EVE is truely unique. CCP has bucked the trend in a lot of areas and almost all of them work. 1 server. Letting you know the population (which continues to go up all the time). Skills train over time, even when offline. No way to speed up the process (except learning skills that aid in the processes).

Roleplay is a little difficult because there really isn't an Avatar running around. You are essentially your ship. But other than that, the game has a lot to offer. I jumped in late(Jan 06), years after release. However, the way everything is layed out, you don't feel completely useless unless you grind to the top. Because there is no top. You just keep learning skills. /commercialover

Who cares if a supercomputer OS is easy to use? The only thing people that use supercomputers care about is speed. Other things supercomputer users care about is compiler efficiency (again for speed.) I don't see Visual Studio cranking out the efficient executables. I'm also quite sure the Joe Schmoe Ph.D in CS, CEE and Physics does not care if an eight year old can navagate the user interface. But he does care whether or not it takes the computer 2 weeks, or 3 months to model galaxy formation. Especially when he knows that there are 7 other teams that just got the same new information from the same conference and are all racing to publish their newest findings.

  16. Re:Hollywood basement ? on Hubble Zooms In On Moon Minerals · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually, this is incorrect. Not the math, just the application. For example, a 1 meter resolution image such as the ones on GoogleMaps can see lines painted in a parking lot. But the lines are't 1 meter wide. Not even close. However, the level of contrast between that line and the surroundings are enough for the lines to appear on the image.

Given enough contrast with its surroundings, an object could be as small at 4 meters wide and still be visible at .0072 arc-seconds resolution. However, given the fairly neutral grey background of the moon, it is highly unlikely that something left behind would shift the contrast balance enough to color the pixel.

  22. Re:Why? on SGI And /Massive/ Linux Machine · · Score: 1

Beowolf clusters are great for cheap fast mutilnode processing. However, The Big SGI servers blow Beowolf clusters away in the bandwith catagory, even within the node itself. For example, the new Origin 3000 series can hold up to 512 R14000 MIPS processors and 1 TB of RAM. With 5.6 Meg/sec between RAM on different nodes. The total system badwith is up to 716MB/sec. Eventhough the speed between nodes in a Beowolf cluster can be up to 1 Gig a sec over the Gigabit Ethernet, the speed between RAM is dog slow. Because Beowolf is tied to, for the most part, inferior Intel technology the bandwith between RAM is very limited. The other big difference is in IO bandwith. The Big SGI boxes blow almost everything else away when it comes to IO bandwith. With SGI's port of XFS to Linux you can bet that you will get much better disk IO on an SGI box than Intel. With all of this being said, I do believe that the effort of porting Linux to this archetecture is useless. Why would someone spend all that money on a "supercomputer" like the o3000 only to put Linux on it. You lose so much performance it just wouldn't be cost effective. SGI has to realize that they have a great operating system in IRIX and a great hardware archetecture. They have thier niche, "supercomputing" and graphic rendering, and for the forseeable future nobody can take that away from them. Right now the people buying their products are not buying them because they are the best for the money, but because they are the best at what they do. They should stick with it and make small advances. SGI working on linux for the desktop is great. I cant wait to start using XFS. However, they will die if they start trying to change their bread and butter products to cheep and inefficiant.
