  2. Re:WoW was ruined on Casual Games Quickly Transforming the MMO Market · · Score: 4, Insightful

So, I've heard this before, and used to be in the same boat. It's not true anymore - you can gear up to decent raid levels without going to raids now, especially with the recent instance additions. It'll take longer than if you were raiding the whole time, but it's not that difficult. You do have to run Heroic 5 man instances though - no way around that.

With the changes they have made to the instances though they are much, much easier to run these days than they used to be in BC. Do the daily heroic each day (30-50 minutes) and you will quickly get enough badges and rewards to be running in one of the entry level raids, keep it up and you can get well beyond the 3000 DPS you mentioned. It takes some patience if you don't have hours to devote to running instances, but one instance each day you can log in should be your first priority if gearing up is what you want to do.

    To Paul Sams/Jeffrey Kaplan:

I realize this might be a bit outside your realm of expertise, but you recently experienced some down time as a result of maintenance by your upstream network provider, AT&T. Given the subscriber levels and revenue (and the fact that there is frequently "scheduled" downtime anyway), how can Blizzard not have redundant network paths to avoid just such a thing?

Surely with the amount of traffic generated by WoW and associated products there are deals to be had on that front. As someone who has (helped) run a similar sized network in the past, I know it can be done - in fact it was considered a necessity.

I agree that the political aspect with regards to "allowed" apps, but honestly - with the number of geeks and hackers that will own this thing how long do we really think it will be before it is hacked? I had similar issues with Java authentication and changing of message tones on my LG CU500, and I got around them without too much trouble. Granted, the restrictions I was getting around are more down to poor design on the part of LG rather than an actual effort on their part as espoused by Jobs, but there will be smarter people than I looking for ways around this, so fear not...........

I know for a fact that Ireland is conservative - I spent the first 25 years of my life there so the poster may be right and Irish people may want the restrictions (I for one do not).

The only problem I have with the argument is the assumption that most people want the restrictions. I doubt this has ever been put to a public vote or even a poll on a website. Surely a better starting position is to allow first and ban later (based on feedback, votes, some sort of review mechanism etc.) rather than some arbitrary censorship rules imposed by a single entity?

Agreed - I once went to a talk given by him and even had a few drinks with him afterward. This was just before Black & White came out - after the talk I was so impressed that I bought the game immediately when it came out and never bothered with reviews and the like. It didn't live up to my expectations (or anyone else's I think). Since then I have been distrustful - Fable did not deliver and I have no reason to think that a new tool will help, though I will always hope.

He created Populous and for that we will be forever grateful, all he has done since is tarnish the memory of that great title with mediocre attempts to re-capture his previous glory. One of the upsetting things about the DS was that it basically looked like a big chunk of ugly plastic compared tot he PSP - it was not exactly something cool to be seen with, or at least that was how I felt when I was roaming around the airports at Cristmas......this was alleviated by the fact that I was playing Mario Kart :)

The DS Lite looks like it will change all that - the hard core gamers are saying that they are getting one to replace their existing one because the screen is much improved, but everyone knows it's really bacuse it just looks swish compared to the old one and is no longer so strangely bulky. Now lets hope that Nintendo get their skates on and announce a US release date sooner rather than later.
