(not a must for include but would be nice). I have work instructions for everything from tape backup to router changes. I keep a journal of what i worked on, why and how i fixed it. I would like my users to submit problems and i would like to be able to access most of this information from anywhere in the building. My final request is that it doesn't require me to spend tons of time managing it. The Free (as in beer) software route is my only option at this point unless I can't find anything.

Do you really want to find out at the last step of procurement that one of your other departments is going to buy a product that does not fit with what you have been building over the last 6 years? While not taking over the process I would want to be involved with the procurement decisions of a new product. Otherwise your final step idea may cause that department to waste time when you throw out there product because it doesn't fit and cause them to go looking for another that does fit.

Your need for a staff can easily be justified by outlining everything that needs to occur within your 1 man IS Department. Outline everything that needs to be done and group it together into ontimers/daily/weekly/monthly then further group by secure and non-secure. Once you have presented your list to them, Throw on top any ideas for big projects you have and tell them that you can implement them with help. you could also include that you used 4 hours to type up this list that a secretary could have typed up for you.

I personally did that and then presented the idea for an internally designed and controlled intranet that would require a parttime person to run it. Then I had a new tool for the business to use along with a parttime employee that would field calls and troubleshoot smaller problems for me in his sparetime while I worked on servers and other tasks.

The other option that you may have is those goverment contracts. Do some research on any regulations that cover you because you have those contracts and you might find out that regulation 123 says you have to do these 3 tasks which in turn constitute the hiring of another person. Either way, It sounds to me like you have management leaning towards what you want just dangle a nice carrot in front of them so they fall off the fence where you want them too.

We are getting to a point in the american culture where life is starting to slow down and people are getting board and start tinkering.

The author is right over the next couple of decades we will get inventions from professional that will allow the amatuers free time to work on there idea's.

Remember Tomas Edison was a young amateur when he created the electronic vote counting machine, cash register and the improved typewriter. Then he went on to become a professional and created more than 1000 other inventions and innovations.

And the software you choose. Where should I begin. I gave you limited dos access for EMERGENCY use. You abused that until I finally said enough and took it away. I open up my DLL's so your precious software could get in and help with tasks i wasn't suited for but it was just ignored, and custom controls were written and guess who you blamed when it didn't work.

I gave you plug and play and you wanted USB i gave you USB and you wanted Firewire. I brought the internet to your doorstep and you just couldn't get enough.

I had patches available and you didn't install them. (Mental note: Self patch once moron leaves) and almost all of the time i didn't get sick until after the patch was avlaible.

And then the event that broke this windows pain. Spyware!!!! You just couldn't stop looking at porn could you. You had to buy those viagra pills.
