That's the problem - the US treats corporations as "persons." If you can't go to jail, you aren't a person. Some person/persons are responsible for the actual misdeeds in this case, and that is where punishment should go. Fining "the company" doesn't hurt the guilty any more than it hurts the innocent investors and employees. Find the guilty person/persons within the company, and prosecute every last one of them. If the boss knew about/condoned/allowed the criminal activity, he is guilty too. The company itself is not a person - a person can go to jail, die of old age, and vote.
If they can get the inconvenience short enough, the courts will probably rule that it is a "minor inconvenience" and is necessary to protect the peace or whatnot, whereas a longer inconvenience is more likely to be recognized as "detainment" and object to it. The faster they can make it, the more likely they are to get away with it.
The tanks and fighter planes aren't being used to infringe on my rights here in the USA, (that I know of).
Why does this need to be hooked up to an iPhone? I'll bet having it as an independent, single-purpose device would be cheaper. Also, it would be less subject to software updates from the Apple. Why do they need a device that can do iris scans AND facebook?
In Cambodia, there are lots of t-shirts for sale with images of Cambodian tourist attractions. the ones at the actual attraction aren't as cheap as the copies sold on the street, but often they all have the same tags they put in shirts for export. I have shirts for museums in Siem Reap that have "Old Navy" tags in them. well made shirts, actually.
In Bangkok you can get "Authentic Levi's" in some of the markets - complete with all tags, and "Wal Mart" price tags (to let you know the retail price so you know you are getting a great deal). The giveaway on those is that in a real Wal-Mart, they haven't used price tags in a long time. Also, you are buying them in Bangkok.
I wonder if the employees knew they were working for a counterfeit store, or if they were lead to believe it was legit? Did they get official-looking email addresses on an apple.cn website?
Maybe we should have the Commander in Chief be a civilian position, as the founders intended? Maybe we should read more than one Heinlein novel? Maybe we should learn to spell before posting/. comments?
Additionally, other than Zaphod-Beeblebroxism I can't understand why the US places so much importance on their president... They can't even make laws -- Wouldn't it be better if the pres actually served in an armed force prior to election as chief commander?
No, that's not likely to lead to any sort of elitism or discrimination.....
When my grandmother had a stroke, the insurance company actually sent a rep to the hospital to go through the itemized bill and dispute charges one line at a time. Some of the charges were for administering drugs that can not be given together (neither of which were actually used), others were for equipment that made no sense, or for a hospital room in a different wing. The rep came by every day, and apparently successfully disputed about half the line items on the bill. The insurance company rep was given the itemized version of the bill as common practice by the hospital, and they actually sent the rep in person each day for several weeks. granted, this was more than 20 years ago....
Now what if someone finds a way to get useful information out of the calculations everyone is doing? A mathematical transform that turns the product of the calculation into something useful?
I've got bad news for you: Poitín, from Ireland, is traditionally made from malted barley or potatoes. Vodka is traditionally made from "anything they can ferment," and today most vodka isn't made from potatoes. Of course, you being the historian that you are, you acknowledge that nobody in Europe was making much from potatoes until the 16th century.
You think fraternity hazing happens by accident? Give one group of people even slight power over another group (unsupervised), and they will quickly find "creative" ways to explore and emphasize that power.
You are correct. From the article, Texas created only 37% of the net new jobs for the entire nation, which is less than half, but is still a pretty fucking amazing disproportion.
Worst case scenario would be they work for a while, long enough that we become dependent solely on them, and then they fail. Imagine a scenario where they survive, but find it easier to pollinate non-crop foods. They discover a niche that doesn't benefit us.
To me, trying to frame someone else for a crime is pretty heinous - especially that particular crime. Attempting to abuse the justice system by setting someone else up is a crime against society as a whole.
If anything, I am offended that the prosecutor even offered the original 2-year deal. Good thing he didn't take it.
"Oh look, because of the increased cost of doing business, our accountants tell us we are only breaking even this year, again."

I doubt he will dispute such an assertion made at that time.
Now we need a third weapon, so you can have your own version of rock-paper-scissors. What beats sword, but not lump of steel?

Corporations are allowed to give more dollars than individuals are. Some "people" just got created more equal.
Did they charge you a recurring fee for the service of simplifying your bill by blocking those other services?

Yes, all of us in Texas have cleverly avoided paying state income taxes.
"This is my boom stick" is a great line. Even if Remington wasn't making double-barrel shotguns at the time.
"It's a trick. Get an axe." is just brilliant. Words to live by.

I'm still trying to find out how the War on Cancer and the War on Poverty turned out. You never hear about them any more. Who won?
That may sound like a lot, but they get amazing reception.
