  1. the newton and cube were wrong? on Will Mac mini Lead the Charge to Smaller Desktops? · · Score: 1

i think it's important to note that the cube and newton were not bad ideas by any means. the newton led the pda revolution, and the cube is damn near the same thing as the mini. they were both wonderful devices.

the point that we have to realize is that some of apple's significant failures, such as the cube and newton, were products of bad timing. the market was simply not ready for those devices, particularly at the price point they were at. apple was still innovating, but we didn't see the rewards until later (in some cases other companies such as palm, etc, and in other cases we see apple winning now with the mini).

it's the same reason why NeXT failed but OS X is succeeding, bad timing.

  2. does it really matter? on Firefox New York Times Ad Hits the Presses · · Score: 2, Insightful

microsoft is simply doing what they always do. they are waiting, and letting others do the work. it's what they did in the first place with the web browser; they let netscape build the browser that people wanted, then they took the ideas and built their own and shoved it into the face of the masses with the os. same thing they did with their whole f'n os back in the day.

they're doing it again. they won the browser war, now they are backing off and letting the mozilla organization pave the way with new browser features. then in time, they'll take their $ and development team, build all those features into a new IE, and shove it back in people's faces, and *poof* other browsers will go away again.

for christ's sake, people on even this site will still put down mac os x, even tho it's laughable to even compare mac os x to windows anymore.

reading through this thread i notice people constantly noting our 'cultural differences' with japan as the cause for our lack in gadgetry. when you think of japan, yes, you think of a 'culture.' they are a defined nation who live a certain way. now think of european cultures, the french, the german, etc, once again they are all defined. now think of american culture. can you think of anything positive in it? we lack a culture, because this country is simply too mixed, and too large, to have any kind of definition.

i'm sure we have a large population of gadget and fashion obsessed individuals who wish to express themselves by how they look and what they carry, i'm one of them. but there's too many bush lovin' country rednecks out there too.

i'm starting to forget the point i was trying to make, but it's somewhere along the lines of... there's too many people in this country with varying cultures themselves, spread out in this vast land, for there to be enough demand to market a product to this entire huge ass country. it simply not not needed for america as a whole, like it or not.

these are the same people that are your relatives that have pc problems, and you go to fix their computer and they look like it as its some magical instrument that only you can repair, they don't want to know how to do things themselves. if people could get some brains, they could try a different os and see that it's better and much easier to use. i'm a mac user, but i have to have a mac and a pc at work, b/c i do .net work, and i'm not about to try all that mono shit.

i agree with them being major upgrades, and can see your logic in saying that it is OS XII, but one thing we all have to notice is that our notion of OS true "upgrades" is warped by the likes of microsoft. they simply bloat their code, change the ui a bit, and add some more features on. but what apple has done has created a nearly perfect user interface [that steve worked on at NeXT for years and years], and now they are doing what they should be doing - optimizing the existing codebase, and then tacking on new revolutionary features. so they're sticking with name X, because it "looks" the same and microsoft has taught us that changing the UI means major upgrade.

does anyone live close to a ghetto or underdeveloped area? well i do, and when i stop by the local gamestop to pick up a new gamecube game, i constantly see little hoodlum children running around like animals, while their parents do nothing. these same children blab on and on about how they want grand theft auto so they can shoot people and steal things. most of these children's parents obviously don't give a shit about what their children are doing. and sorry everyone, they aren't going to change. these children do not need simulated crime in their life, because it's basically going to be training them for the real thing, cuz they really don't have much guidance out there, and we no matter how much we'd like to change that, we can't.

so for once, i back away from my normally liberal views, and say we don't need this shit.

i don't necessarily agree that changing the game is the most important feature they screwed up. i think their design team was so absolutely pitiful that they managed to screw everything up on an equal level. i have both a background in both the geek and design worlds, and i just can't wait to watch this thing bomb.

sorry nokia, no matter how much $ you pump out to the media to to support this thing, and $ to developers to make games, if they don't make any money off of you in the end, you're screwed. and anyone with some common sense isn't going to buy this piece of garbage. really, just look at, the product design does nothing for the senses. when i see an ipod, or a gameboy advance, i instinctively know that something interesting and useful is in my hands. good physical product design is one of the most important and first steps of development after the idea stage, and without a good foundation there, you're screwed. ok enough of my ranting. go nokia!
