yes they are in chrage of standards, and the standards are what ie5.5/ns6/mozilla/opera5 support. w3c can't force anyone to change their browser tho. it takes a genius like zeldman to come up with this idea, and he has many followers. and as i've stated in another post, not every single site will participate in this project. hardcore users who like jakob nielson type websites will stick with their outdated browsers and read their simply designed pages. all they want is content, and that is what they'll get. i'm not complaining to these users, for their desire will be fulfilled by their old browser. i just see no reason to use a browser that takes back to 1997 - nn4.x. if you wanna use nn, then use nn6 or the latest build of mozilla.

I see XML being mentioned in the article post, but what exactly is being done with XML in this project arena? Personally, I can see XML as the perfect tool to fit into a card cataloguing system. An XML card catalog language specification should be constructed, and used for inter-library communication between school libraries, college libraries, and public libraries.

So yes, there seems to be some value in the project

If they see 'dummies' associated with 'linux', some people might recognize that the OS is not quite as complex as some of the common news sources report it is. It won't hurt the linux community to have some more publicity by the sale of these books.

  20. The Current State of Gaming on Vanishing Game Genres · · Score: 4

Remember when the gameplay was what really mattered in games? Remember walking through dungeons, which pretty much lacked animation? It was the gameplay that mattered. Nowadays, companies try to make their product as graphically impressive as possible and compromise gameplay. Another problem is development time - since the companies focus so much on graphical content, their development time is vastly increased, and by the time the product ships, it is no longer graphically pleasing [cuz technology has moved on] and the gameplay is unsatisfactory. All this does is make for horrible games.

Many gamers out there still enjoy non graphical MUDs, since all that matters is the quest and the emotional involvement in a created world. Graphical MUD type games are the thing of the future, and games in general are completely becoming online based. The new era of gaming includes other real people, and this all started with the emotional involvement in games that was created by Doom. I'll never forget those first times I got to chase my friends around and kill them...hehehe...you know what I mean.

So lets move gaming technology forward not simply in graphical content, but game companies need to do more psychological studies on what gamers need and what they desire in their gaming environments. This is where the true advances can take place.

When it comes down to it, people love free software. I dont wanna pay 10.00 for every little utility that someone writes [like you have to for most palm apps]. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that standardization of the the linux UI will simply transform linux into an open source version of windows? Personally, one reason why I enjoy linux is the complete customization of one's desktop and entire working environment. And I do agree that a standardized Linux UI would be better than Windows, but I'd rather keep the variety that is present today.

If this standardization takes place, KDE will simply be a thing of the past. I was a long time KDE user until recently, due to Gnome 2.0's superiority over KDE. Hopefully KDE 2.0 will put up a fight, so that we will once again have two great window managers to choose from, and two great window managers to develop for.
