We're going to build this "power station" on the moon and "beam" back the energy.
Is it just me or does this sound like a plot line for the Simpsons?
Given the track record of our scientists and their math skills, somehow I see much of the western seaboard being pan fried like a blackened catfish. The only other question I have for this plan is:
I think you misunderstood me when I mentioned the meds. There are drugs available that prevent the seizures from happening. Since playing the game caused him to go into a seizure the mother should have either kept him from playing the game or gotten him the meds to prevent them from happening. But she also didn't bother to get him into therapy to help find the root of the problems. But let's not forget that this "kid" is 21 years-old.
My biggest gripe are with the people that use a TV or computer as a babysitter and as a substitute for human conversation and contact. From the article and the mother's statement, she didn't monitor his use of the computer or take action when she thought he "was spending too much time" on it. I place all blame on the parent. She failed to get him the help he needed, didn't take action when his habits caused his health harm and then sat back and watched him die crying out that someone else should pay for her inaction.
I agree, don't just shove him in a room for someone else to deal with. But get him the meds to prevent the seizures, and therapy to solve the depression.
Will somebody please accept responsibility for their own actions!
From the Newspaper article:
Woolley knows her son had problems beyond EverQuest, and she tried to get him help by contacting a mental health program and trying to get him to live in a group home. A psychologist diagnosed him with depression and schizoid personality disorder, symptoms of which include a lack of desire for social relationships, little or no sex drive and a limited range of emotions in social settings.
The guy had problems before playing the game. With the problems stated, anything could have set him off. Perhaps he played the game before offing himself in an attempt to cheer himself up after some other thing upset him. Maybe the mother should have done a better job at keeping him from playing a game that triggered his seizures.
Perhaps she should have made sure he stayed on his meds. Maybe if she had paid more attention to him while he was alive she could have seen that something was about to happen.
Frankly it's a sad thing that this guy commited suicide, but rather than putting the blame on everyone or everything else, maybe they should look in the mirror and ask if they did everything they could have done to prevent it.
I'll put up with Wesley. But is there any word yet on dumping that Suck ass theme song?
I mean please! I have to turn off the sound when the show starts because that music sucks so much ass.
I think we've all become more savvy in our surfing. We don't just click and hope it will take us where we want to go, I think we are simply finding that the information we're looking for is easier to find, and that having to "look" for it easier. We don't have the "onion layered" websites anymore. For me, I know that when I go to a site, I'll find what I want quickly and without having to wait while the page is being downloaded. Most sites now opt for smaller images to help save bandwidth and to speed page loads. Programmed their sites better to make the code cleaner, and the cross-platform viewing better.
Lost its luster? Not hardly. Up to the second news reporting, better product information, buying guides, and direct contact with companies when you're shopping. The net is still growing, and I don't think we've even got a clue of how much it will play a role in peoples lives.
I just look at the headers and forward any unwanted mail to the abuse@/support@insertdomain.here as a violation of the TOS. My mail that used to be 30-40% spam has gone down to 10-20%. Since most mail I get have phoney "Unsubscribe" links, I'm not even wasting my time. A simple script forwards the spam to the ISP in question and they take care of it. Last I heard even Yahoo is talking about charging for large amounts of mail traffic from one of their addresses.
That a CompUSA employee was "on the ball" enough to realize what the kid was doing. From the blank "deer-in-headlights" stares I usually get when I ask questions, I'm amazed that he was caught. I can still remember using Zip disks on the display PCs in my younger days. Kinda makes you want to run out and get an iPod.
Two lines for "paddles" and a square "ball" and you were set! You want to talk cheesy graphics? I still remember people waiting in line to play it. Ahhh youth...
Sure, some folks will get better, clearer calls, but I see danger written all over this. Knowing that "what goes up, must come down", I see the landscape being littered over time with broken and deflated balloons and rusting communications equiptment.
Nader and the rest of the Green Party will have a field day with this one.
With the recent evidence of MS actively working to slant figures and polls in their favor, I wonder if the 7,000 "pro" MS comment were nothing more than MS employee statements. But at least with a two to one margin I hope the Feds are paying attention.
We may not openly admit to the rest of the world that we know what shagging means, and our TV commercials maybe be a bit more repressed, but why else would we have come up with shag carpet but to ease those pesky carpet burns from regular carpeting.
Face it. Everyone enjoys a a bit of the old slap and tickle. I do have to admit it's much nicer to ask a lady if she wants to shag than if she wants to F*ck. It just has a more friendly tone to it.
Unfortunately, many of the clients I deal with simply don't know how to use anything other than Word. The vacuous open-mouth stare I get when I try to explain that they too can create PDF files, just goes to prove that I will always have a job. Sure, it gets in the way of my programming duties, but if they're willing to pay the $160/hour to have me do it then it suits me just fine. It may also explain why other companies are out of business and we are still doing quite well.
Word is simply the only program that most non-tech people know. Because it's there on the "desktop" it's all they will ever know. If you want to change the "standard" then you have to provide a choice other than Word. But the problem with that is most companies and people don't want to have to buy two programs that do the same job.
I'm sorry to say this, but there is no easy solution to this problem. My biggest complaint isn't about Word attachments but the people that send Powerpoint files as instructions instead of a simple email. And yes. I got a two slide PPT to explain to me that a word was misspelled. One to show how it was wrong, and the other to show how it should be spelled.
Lets add "MS Stooge" to the options for Moderators.
This way when a post on/. is clearly from an MS employee or puppet, we can clearly label them.
(Just kidding)
I have to admit, with all of the failed.coms and the un-employment, MS must be putting hundreds of people to work with the sole purpose of rigging online polls! No wonder they can't lower their prices!
It talks (the article) about "smart spaces" keeping track of the computers and systems you interact with.
I'm not sure that I want to have something track me that closely. Lets face it. You get off work early, and say to yourself," Self, I think I'll stop for a beer on the way home." Now if for some reason, your spouce is keping tabs on you remotely, you're in trouble before the you take for first swig. Your wearable device just blew the whistle on you. And I don't even want to think about how this might track you while surfing p0rn or at the adult book store!
I'm sorry, but when I leave work I want to leave work. Having it follow me around, always be "in touch" just isn't my idea of a good product.
Watch re-runs of Loveboat, and everyone pick a regular show character and whenever there is a full screen shot of the person they pick, you down a shot.
I usually picked the boat, since they usually only show it full screen two or three times.
It made it easier to pick-up on the single women at the party if I wasn't tanked and they were.

Can I get one for my home PC and will it cost less than the GNP of a small third-world country?

What happens if the FBI Magic Lantern program gets downloaded into it?
Will the Feds start keeping a record of which countries imports I'm drinking?
What if there is spy ware in the glass?
Will it change my order with the bartender to one of their sponsored brewers?
This idea scares me! I better go lie down and have a beer to calm my nerves...

Yeah, record this...
Think about beta testing a new game....
Gives a whole new meaning to, "Thank you Sir! May I have another!"

Free Porn!
Sorry, I couldn't help that one.
But really, easy to use navigation.
Lots of information rather than image driven.
Try to keep the site from becomming like an onion. (Layer after layer...)
No popup/popunder ads
Try to keep the images to 20k or less.
Keep it simple. The more whistles and bells you add, more chances the code will break on someones browser.
Spelling. Try to spell check yourself.
Keep the colors simple and contrasting. There are color blind people that surf the net.
Keep the animations to a minimum
Post the size of large files next to the links
Just a few of the top of my head.

Or does this sound far too much like the old story about the Fox guarding the Hen-house?
And I can just bet that with their stellar record of security practices that they will succeed in this move.
Thanks, but I think I'll put my money in my sock and go live in a cave. Because the world is about to have a major security problem.

The complete three season package. It's only on video (taped as I watched the first time) but better than no Sopranos.
How can you beat watching Pauly, Furio, and Christopher all working for Tony?
It's that or all five seasons of Babylon five.
