by the same token, I hope your employer doesn't think the following: I paid for your working hours so I will use you during those hours, resell you during those hours, disassemble you during those hours, modify you as I see fit during those hours since I paid for your time, and no, I don't give a rat's ass about what any work regulations say. Get off the damn internet and stop reading/. during work hours because I own you during work hours.
Don't people look at both sides of an issue before declaring a holy war? Instead it's a barrage of *mine* *I* *MY*. That same jackbooted government that you think is going to pry stuff out of your hands is the same one that makes sure you're not a slave during work.
A lot of people would want BeOS until they found out Microsoft Office doesn't run on it. I've thought of using BeOS as my only non-gaming OS but the lack of Microsoft Office killed that idea really fast.
Imagine "uhhh, mr SVP sir, could you resend that file in an rtf format?"
It's not so much an OS monopoly but an office suite monopoly that lets Microsoft run rampant with windows, especially in the corporate environment. Is there truly any office suite you'd try to convert a large corporation to? If you do, don't forget to handle the conversion of existing ms office files stored in local harddrives, network harddrives, email attachments, etc.
I beg to differ in your opinion on that Microsoft appears to be trying and what Palm does. IMHO, it seems to be reversed.
The PocketPC seems to be the extension of the desktop by packing as much functionality as they can into a small package and providing the constant sync feature when in the cradle. The PocketPC is a much lesser device when it has no desktop to return to. And this may seem like a lame excuse, and it does to me depending my mood, but the shorter battery life on the PocketPC isn't much of an issue when usually you have it docked when you're at your desk. As soon as I get home or to my work computer, I put it in the cradle to sync data and data files as well as to top off the charge.
Palm, on the other hand, can get away from the desktop pretty easily. My wife uses a Palm IIIx and she rarely syncs her data. She does it once in a while to backup the data but that's about it. To her, the Palm is a separate entity from the computer and are not intertwined or dependent like the PocketPC is. Palm is much less an extension of the desktop than it is a standalone productivity tool with the ability to connect to a computer.

you're right, most users won't want it. I thought it was just a gimmick too until I saw a vendor do a presentation with an ipaq, pcmcia vga card, and a compact lcd projector. Did a slide show and a video demo of their product and packed everything into a small laptop bag. As someone who travels on business and has to lug a multi-pound laptop around, the PocketPC became a very attractive option at that point given the other features in addition to its media capabilities and the chance to leave the laptop behind.
As a straight PDA, the Palm wins easily. As a business laptop substitute (not replacement) with PDA functionality included, the PocketPC wins hands down. And don't tell me just whip out a Vaio subnotebook for PDA tasks. Try that standing in an airport line looking for a contact name for a coworker who's on the phone with you.
people just need to find the right tools to use and for some it's a Palm and others, it's a PocketPC.
Microsoft is acting like a) their entire future is riding on this thing
Isn't that what separates Microsoft and its success from other companies? The attitude that a less than 100% push will cause the downfall of the company even when reality says otherwise.
This all brings up a good point. Wouldn't it be a better idea for today's PC game development shops to distribute their own customized OS' with their games, so that rather than firing up the game in one of 5 different Windows OS', and trying to support all those versions, they could just boot a lean & mean OS straight from CD to run their game, rather than trying to navigate through Windows' DLL hell?
isn't each game for the X-Box supposed to have its own stripped down version of WinCE or Win2000 that loads when starting up? This was done to avoid patching a gaming console and make sure that there were no compatibility problems with drivers and such. I understood that the base OS itself, once all the extras not needed for the X-Box were stripped out, was less than 1MB is size and loaded rather quickly.
Please correct me if I am wrong since it's been a while since I read this information.
I thought it was ok to download copyrighted material but illegal to make copyrighted material available for download. So in your case, you'd be in violation for making the material available.
I believe that England, along with Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland form the United Kingdom. England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island of Great Britain. Now if UK-English defines England as an island, then I stand corrected and would like someday to visit the Island of Scotland and the Island of Wales.
So what brave slashdotter is going to step forward and demand that the copy protection be removed so they can listen to n'sync in whatever method they choose? Better yet, who's going to the store and doing that buy it, return it, then raise a stink about it stunt?
I thought n'sync music (using the term loosely) was a copy protection in and of itself.
it also makes the title Matrix more appropriate when used in terms of data storage and processing rather than energy generation. Also would explain why Neo was able to effect the virtual reality the way he did. I mean would you really hook up your UPS directly to your computer's BIOS and hope it doesn't accidentally send in a nice electrical surge?
A young Kirk could show up...During a pod race, one of the JTK's engines on his pod racer starts emitting chronotons, creates a temporal distortion, and he goes straight through it to avoid a reckless-driving Anakin Skywalker to end up 130 years into his past. I beleive JarJar will also have a similar temporal accident while manipulating a warp bubble on his submarine.

apparently millions of GBA's and associated game cartridges say that parents will buy them for their kids.

it would make more sense if people used smaller fonts for all their internet communication instead of trying to get rid of the 0's.

Room on the bandwagon for one more?
One of the last Atari 8-bit DOS's supported ramdisks also. DOS 2.5 I think.

About all I can't do isget a cup of coffee. I use a long handled shovel for that. I use a long handled shovel for that.
Perhaps if you hollowed out the pole and used it as a straw to the coffee machine also?
