  1. digitallyimported.com on BBC Testing Ogg Vorbis Streaming · · Score: 2

digitallyimported.com had a Vorbis stream for awhile. It was up and down all the time because they were always messing with it. It was 80kbps, but sounded better than the 128kbps MP3 stream. They've taken it down citing too much work.

I've played with Icecast's Vorbis support, and frankly, it was kind of a pain in the ass to get working. Administering a whole bunch of servers with it would most likely be a big pain. mod_mp3 for apache supports Vorbis though, I've suggested that to DI, hopefully they will check it out.

Grab yourself a Sandisk SDDR-31 CF reader, cut it apart. Buy a USB plug from digikey, cut off most of the cable and solder the new plug very close to the rest of the the part you ripped out. Buy yourself an IBM 340MB ($155) or a 1G ($310) microdrive. Plug it into the pins on the connector you ripped out of the CF reader.

Make yourself a cheap mold out of a little plastic container with a hole cut in the side for the USB plug to stick out of, put your electronics in it and fill it with that 2 part polymer stuff. Instant pocket 1G drive, for under $350.

I grabbed the demo about 2 weeks ago, and I have to say, it's pretty damn fun. After I hacked in and changed some guys social security number, the demo ended because my rating got too high.

Apparently there's a story line which gets quite interesting, and the CD has a password protected zip file on it. You have to crack it to find out what's in it. I don't have the full version yet, but I'm planning on buying it. 2 of my friends just received their copies today.

Just download the demo and try it out, chances are that you'll buy it. I can't stop playing once I sit down in front of it, and I'm not normally into games at all.

  6. already had one on For Sale: 1 Damian Conway, 1 Dan Sugalski · · Score: 5, Funny

I ordered a Tim Conway awhile back because he was on clearance. The first sales rep didn't even know they still had one around. Well, they sent me a Damian Conway instead. I couldn't get him to do the "Dorf" bit, and he wouldn't wear stupid clothes or talk like a Norwegian at all. I tried to return him, but they wouldn't take him back because when I opened the box, I automatically agreed to their EULA which was inside.

Finally, after several weeks of complaining they let me ship him back for an exchage. Except they accidentally sent me Conway Twitty this time. Actually I'm not so sure it was an accident. Anyway, Conway Twitty happily does a norwegian accent so I'm fairly satisfied. Except he keeps trying to seduce my grandma...

That's not secure either. SSL sessions can be intercepted. Just take a look at ettercap, search for it on freshmeat.net. After playing with this on your bridged DSL connection a little bit, you'll realize that SSL sucks.

Strong encryption via PGP or some other strong method would be the way to go.

Actually, in a previous article I read about XM, they will have exactly 29 commercial free channels. But, is it just a coincedence that they also have exactly 29 news/talk only channels?

I should just sign up and then cancel citing too many commercials, just to make a point. It probably wouldn't matter much, but it would if many people did it.

  9. efficiency on Chrysler Announces Hydrogen Fuel Cell Van · · Score: 2

    The FAQ says:

The weight-energy storage is almost equivalent to gasoline. This means it generates about the same amount of energy per gallon of fuel as gasoline.

So, if this is true, wouldn't an electric car powered by this with fuel cells probably get better mileage than most gasoline cars? A gasoline engine is burning the fuel, giving up like 90% of it's energy in the form of heat. While fuel cells, and electric motors also produce heat, it's not nearly as much and a much larger percentage of the energy can be used for actually powering the vehicle.

  10. Re:I will NOT pay for XM. on Satellite Radio: Tune In or Turn Off? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I agree completely. XM has the advantage of being out first, especially right before christmas. But there is no friggin' way in hell I'm going to *PAY* $10 a month for more commercials. I will happily pay $12.95 a month though to Sirius for commercial free music.

An mp3 player in the car would be nice, but it requires love and attention for adding new music, creating playlists, etc. It's nice to just be able to turn on the radio and hear music. Plus, you get exposed to new music on the radio, with an mp3 player, you are limited to what's in your current library.

I've complained many times to XM about their commercials, and several of my friends have also. It appears that they have made a few channels commercial free now because of all of the complaints, but there are still commercials, and there is no way I'm going to pay for that.

One thing I've noticed though, is that many of those sites that give you a form for your site, or integrate somehow, have fairly easily exploitable "price change" holes. I know of several sites that are vulnerable to it. Basically, the price and total are URL encoded into links on the order page. Stupid mistake. If you check each and every order before you send it out, that's probably fine, but if you have someone else sending your merchandise for you, you'll probably run into some problems.

If anyone knows of a place that will give me a merchant account without taking a bundle of my money, let me know. I spent about 6 months trying to find one about 2 years ago, and then just scrapped the site because there was no way for me to accept online payments.
