  1. Fedex is the same way on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 2

We have probably 15 or so Dell 2450's and 6350's that were literally destroyed by Fedex. I swear that it looks like they kicked them off the truck going 60mph. I've also had 2 Sun Enterprise 250's arrive without the box on them anymore, just the computer on a pallet with the box and contents missing. Computer equipment and shipping do not mix. If you plan on shipping computer equipment, make damn sure you insure it, because chances are that it won't make it to its destination in one piece.

Keep in mind that what you do in your classes is simply to develop the skills you will need when you get a real job. Most school work hardly reflects what you will be doing in the real world. If you do end up being a software engineer, writing software will at least have some other point than simply getting an A. You will have a clear objective, and using your creativity you'll be free to pretty much implement it the way you like, which is completely unlike any classes I had.

I grew to hate my CS classes at the U of MN, but now that I have a real job, I really enjoy what I do. I'm not a software engineer, I'm a Unix and network security guy, but I use the skills I learned in college to get and keep my job. I can safely say that my classes did not even come close to reflecting what I do in the real world, but they helped.

And if this will help AMD sell more processors than they did before, I'm all for it. Do you really want AMD to keep the same amount of market share they have now? Or do you want them to make more money and continue bringing you sweet processors?

I used to live with my Aunt when going to college. My bedroom was down in the basement, and had a large opening into the rest of the basement with no door. One night, it was completely dark in my room except for the light on my stereo. I was just falling asleep, and I heard that little purring noise that cats make right before they jump up on something, and then felt something land solidly on my chest. There are no pets in the house, so as you would imagine, I was pretty freaked out. I tried to jump up, but I couldn't move, I was paralyzed. I managed to finally crack my eyes open, and I could barely see my lights on my stereo. Finally, after what seemed like 2 or 3 minutes, I felt whatever it was on my chest jump off and I was able to jump up and hit the lights. Nothing in my room, nothing in the rest of the basement. I have no idea what it was, but I slept with the light on the next few nights. It scared the hell out of me.

Last night, I watched a show on TLC about sleep paralysis and people who have similar experiences, some with actual physical damage from it (cuts and scars). It hasn't happened since then (about 6 years ago), but everytime I think about it I get the shivers.

HardOCP.com ran an article the other day that said they were installing an 1800+ XP processor, and reached across the desk to grab something, bumping a key on the keyboard, which booted the machine with no heatsink and destroyed the processor. It looks to me like the current 1800+ XP's still don't have any sort of heat protection. Not that I care. It's not like they are very expensive, and the probability that your heatsink is just going to fall off is pretty low anyway. If the lack of heat protection keeps the cost down, then I'm all for it.

Something that isn't a very widespread problem hardly warrants adding more circuitry and increasing the cost of a CPU.
