speaking of abandonware, does anyone know where one can either find a downloadable version of Star Control 2 or a vm that allows it to run with sound, etc? what a great game..
i dont see why this is a surprise to anyone. it is plainly obvious that there is only so much data that can be stored on a two-dimensional device. i, personally, think that if it weren't for the inhibitants of ancient (5-10 year old) technology, this form of storage would have manifested itself much sooner. i mean, think about it. the early forms of data storage were pretty one dimensional. your data could be a magnetic blip on a reel that was spinning in one direction. to get back to it, you had to spin all the way back to the real. next came floppy disks which added another dimensions. true, to get back to your data, you have to spin the disk completely around again, but at least you can use cylinders to add more storage space. three dimensions comes rather naturally along that pattern. what's next? obviously, time-coded storage - the fourth dimension.
This is a very similar argument to all sorts of other issues. In America, it always seems to boil down to either the government regulating it, a private entity regulating it, or a private entity hired by the government to regulate it. Is this the result of our capitalist society? I honestly don't know.
What we need is individual civic entities operating out of goodwill, not money, in order to establish rights and rules for all things, not just airwaves. Of course, no good American will do this, becaus it requires things like 'goodwill' and 'selflessness' and 'working without pay'.
as a follower of Christ who specializes in nerdiness/geekiness, i feel obligated to answer your questions.
while the bible does not specifically state that there is life on other planets, it never says that there isn't life on other planets. i, personally, believe that there isn't life, even though i know this is total flamebait. this is my belief and it is based on feelings, not facts. i would venture to believe that the feelings i have that lead me to believe this are probably similar to one's feelings that would lead one to believe that because there are other planets, there's a possibility that life exists on them. We currently have no evidence that really proves that extra-terrestrial life exists, but we have no evidence that really proves that extra-terrestrial life doesn't exist. Very similar to my faith, in that I have no rock-solid evidence that proves that my God exists but I have no rock-solid evidence against Him, either. That's why it's called faith..
As far as Jesus dying for the sins of aliens on other planets..hmm..it really depends on a couple of things. First of all, if we are to believe that the fall of man was confined only to earth, then I would probably say that yes, Jesus did only die for the sins of those who live on earth..e.g. "For God so loved the WORLD" -- However, I believe that man's fall was universal, and therefore I would have to say that the universe, in turn, was entirely effected.
Many questions remain, even though none have really been answered.. if aliens exist, why do we assume that it would be intelligent life and not like a martian dog or rat or something? if the life is intelligent, does it have a soul that is saveable, according to Christian theology? hmmm..much meditation and critical thinking is required here..
well, fortunately, in my environment, i was revered as the tech-god and my decisions were unquestionable..it was quite an eerie feeling to know that what i said went and no one bothered to question me..
i was in a very similar situation not too long ago..i, of course, realized the necessity of backing up important data regularly, but no one else in the office seemed to care. i decided to simply let nature run its course if the users were so apathetic towards back-ups. after a month or so, the inevitabe happened..a user lost close to a year's worth of information! they came to me and were on the verge of tears. all i could do was say "well, didn't you make the back-ups like i recommended?", to which their reply was a indignant "no!" you can bet from then on, the user made back-ups -- on top of this, the user went around and started hassling other people to make back-ups too! sometimes, the passive approach is best..
make sure to upgrade the deflector shield on the vehicle. falling records and baseballs are easily blocked by the lower end model, but you really need the industrial strength model to ward off those grand pianos!
still waiting for that level of encryption shown in everyones favorite hacking movie that displays the giant skull and crossbones in a cheezy GUI to let you know that you don't have access..
ok..in rebuttal..first, they're extremely young to be falling in love and getting married..secondly, they haven't seen each other for ten years, so of course its going to be awkward..thirdly, are you a senator or is your wife a jedi padawan? and fourthly, we know that because of all this crap that it's not going to work out anyways..
and don't talk down to me about relationships, dude, because you don't know where *i'm* coming from..:)
I'm honestly sick and tired of people bagging on AotC. "It's not 'A New Hope'!" "It's not 'Empire Strikes Back'!"..no, it's not..and neither is it supposed to be. AotC is telling a completely different story and I happen to like it. Now don't get me wrong, but episodes 4,5, and 6 were very good, probably my most favorite movies of all time. I find it fascinating to watch the history of my childhood heroes! Yeah, I'll admit that TPM probably wasn't the best movie of all time but it was nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
While Lucas did commercialize the literal hell out of that movie, it's easy to see that he's learned from his mistake, as the number of adverts on soda cans is way down from last time. For you spiderman fans, let's not forget that every time you turn on the tv you see those idiotic cingular wireless commercials.
People have been bagging all kinds on the acting, but I happen to think that the acting of the characters is right on. Everyone says "Oh, Anakin and Padme look and speak so awkwardly that they seem to want to be somewhere else!" Yeah..ok, and this is coming from/. geeks with how much romance experience?:) Anyhow, think about it..if you're Senator Amidala, you're a representative of an entire planet so everyone has their eyes on you all the time. She's probably under enormous stress and has been since early childhood! Anakin, sheesh..coming to terms with his destiny and calling, learning to use force powers, and dealing with an over-critical mentor..and don't forget that these kids are only around 19! So you're telling me that they're supposed to be all suave and charming lovers, too? I don't know about you, but I sure as heck wouldn't buy that..
The story is compelling..the action is good..if your attention span is so short that Rambo makes you drift off to sleep then, yeah, the 'details', 'background', and 'story' of the movie might make you not like it..just stop bagging on this movie because it's not like the first 3.
that's all well and good..but why should they listen to us? oh sure, that would be democratic..but since when do we live in a real democracy? seriously..think about it.
what, like people don't have enough to try to figure out about life that they have to spend all their extra time trying to solve MORE problems? i don't get it..and now you get to do it online. how fun..
ok, c'mon dude..use your head..what is behind a music cd? you have some (5-6) artists who write and perform a song..you have studio time, an engineer, a sound masterer, advertising (let's just say that these costs would be roughly similar to software), and production costs (also same). for a $50 game you have a much larger staff, for one..you have support staff as well, when your game decides that it doesn't like your computer! when's the last time you called up BMG because your CD player didn't play the CD? you also have testers in software development to make sure that the game works before you release it..now i'm not saying that games are overpriced, but i can certainly see why they are more expensive than music..and just to clear up the possibility of biases, i, myself, am a professional musician..
it would probably be like the bullet time used in jedi knight 2..in the single player game the world slows down while you speed up..but in the multiplayer you just speed up even more..
seeing as how everyone and their grandmother's dog-sitter read the post about Kazaa's involuntary spyware and then promptly deleted Kazaa from their system, I really don't see how this story should effect anyone..right? hmmm..on second thought..is it the kazaa NETWORK?
ok, I'm trying to find out why a court WOULD order that a company like SONICBlue to record viewing habits for distribution to other media companies..does anyone know the court's reasoning behind this?
[shrug] a little far fetched, by why couldn't, after a couple primary excavation missions, they crew disassemble the shuttle, using its parts for construction? kind of reminds me of command and conquer, with the mobile construction vehicle.
speaking of abandonware, does anyone know where one can either find a downloadable version of Star Control 2 or a vm that allows it to run with sound, etc? what a great game..
i dunno..do those things put out enough power to handle my liquid nitrogen cooling pump without a hiccup to the CPU? [grin]
clearly, you are missing the concept..ah well

so you're saying that the government doesn't regulate tv? *coughFCCcough* or the airlines? *coughFAAcough*

we did it unofficially..and our source of entertainment wasn't games per-se, it was more along the lines of:
user a:
c:\net send a you suck!!!
user b:
c:\net send b your mom!!!
still waiting for that level of encryption shown in everyones favorite hacking movie that displays the giant skull and crossbones in a cheezy GUI to let you know that you don't have access..
wouldn't the calculation of it just add to the total number of calculations that the universe has made?
no, but the lack of revenue will hurt the competition in the long run..
