Not that I know anything, but this applies to everything: experience is vital. Go out and do consulting work to get your hands wet. If you know absolutely nothing start off in tech support somewhere - you will learn very quickly. I don't know about what employers are looking for, but I believe that experience would be way more valuable than a bunch of theory that you may have learned from some junior college prof.

totally..my dad is like this. He is a small business owner and he refuses to learn anything about a computer. I helped him buy a computer for his office (he used to just have his secretary do everything for him, until he realized that he could do crossword puzzles online!!) and this was a huge mistake. Immediately he started calling for 'help'. It was not even like he wanted help, he just wanted me to do it for him. Simple things, like sending email with MSN. He would call me over to his office in a big panic and tell me that he couldn't figure out how to send email. When I'd show him how to do it he wouldn't pay attention..in fact, at one point, he left the room and started dictating the letter to me! It's people like this who piss me off the most..just a complete unwillingness to learn..

People BUY complexity. They could buy a Mac, but they buy the PC because it has 'more software'. They could buy a simple phone, but they buy the one with all the gee-wizz features. They could pay $10 for shareware, but they want Photoshop and Word.

to make this an anti-PC and anti-Microsoft spot..
you do have one good point, though, about buying complexity. I use Word because it is as easy as I want and also as difficult as I want. It's very scalable. Only in the *Nix and shareware/half-ass-ware world would I find a word processor that I could save to a document format that said processor could not, in turn, open.

  8. Worst Job Ever on The Absolute Worst Working Environment? · · Score: 2, Interesting

When I was 16 I got hired by this African immigrant who was sending used clothes over to the homeland. I thought that it sounded like a good cause and I figured that minimum wage would be fine for that. Basically my job consisted of driving a u-haul truck around to the dumpsters behind thrift stores and emptying the dirty, smelly, nasty clothes (these are the ones that even the thrift stores don't want) into the truck's cargo area. When I had a full truck load (the big trucks, mind you) I would take it back to the warehouse where I would then unload it. I would then reload the clothes into a baling machine. I was the only one working and I would create about 8 bales a day that weighed well over 1000 lbs. each.

And then it started getting bad...on my first payday the boss decided to buy lunch for me. I thought, "Hey! Cool!" Well, as it turns out, he did that only because he didn't have money to pay me. Again, I thought hey, it's not that big of a deal - it's for charity, right? Well, on the next payday the guy actually had a check for me! However, when I went to cash it, the teller said that she couldn't do it because there weren't sufficient funds. and then came the shoes..

The guy's next project for me was to organize second-hand shoes. He takes me to this warehouse that was literally jammed full of shoes, from floor to ceiling. I had to sort the shoes manually, all by myself.

Finally, I discovered that this was not so charitable of a foundation as I had originally thought. Apparently this guy was charging a LOT of money (even by modern clothing price standards) to these poor countries. I soon quit..

I consider myself an idealist but this is taking a principal just a few shades too deep, I believe. What if, instead of a business site, Mike Rowe created a clone site of Microsoft's content and was damaging their business? Copyright laws exist because sometimes the average consumer will not know the difference between two companies. I will admit that I think that Microsoft is taking things too far in this case, but I do think that you are incorrect in making such a bold claim about a principal of capitalism.

I know that, to some people, this might go without saying, but what about the lessons that you, yourself teach your children? What you write seems to imply that the bulk of how kids learn to be social comes from either the television or from hanging out with their racist friends. I'm not entirely against TV but if you have little social interaction outside of it, you're going to make your own prejudices against people; not necessarily about race, but definitely about other things.

For example, why don't the boys/girls at school look nearly as attractive as the ones on "Friends"? And while we're on the subject of "Friends", how about lifestyle discrimination (I'm not referring to homosexuality, but general lifestyle decisions)?

Kids need a fair balance when it comes to learning behavior, but I believe that the majority of it should come from the parents. I plan on taking my kids to social events with me so that they can see real life examples of social behavior. I'm not just going to leave it up to their friends and I ESPECIALLY will not leave it up to Barney.
