  1. I know all the cool kids won't invite you to their parties if you praise the idiot-in-chief for anything, but I fail to see the problem here. He played hardball and got what he wanted, and the outcome is in the best interests of the US. If you shut down the company completely, you risk putting other companies off of US suppliers in the long term. That may have been worth it if they hadn't capitulated - but they did capitulate.

What are you talking about? What is Trump getting out of letting a company who is violating trade sanctions to Iran and N. Korea, and has been found to be a security risk; to sell more products in the US?

  2. What do you think going to happen to US agricultural sector when China inevitably retaliates for US torpedoing ZTE?

They'll get Congress to raise money and keep them millionaires via the Farm Bill.

  3. You have to see the big picture here.

I can see the big picture here; it's Trump voters who don't see the big picture. They rallied around the idea of "corruption" when in reality they were rallying against accountable government and due process. Especially due process which was somewhat keeping Trump's croniness in check. And now that Trump is out and out breaking the emoluments clause of the Constitution they refuse to see it. They just see that this hypocrisy is driving a little over 50% of the country crazy, and that's why they voted for him; so they will remain blind to everything he does.

  15. I would think that the best movie would be the movie that's going to have the longest lasting impact on either culture, or the industry. I can think of a movie that's unquestionably had a huge impact on both culture, and the movie making industry, which was released in 1977, and yet did not get best picture. I realize that best picture shouldn't just go to the movie that sold the most tickets, but the academy seems to eschew movies for best picture which do bring in ticket sales. I think they'd get more respect if ticket selling movies were the top competitors for best movie.

  17. That sentiment would be reasonable if we were at war with Russia, but we're not. We're in Syria to fight Isis. Russia's public position is that they're in Syria to fight Isis too. The problem is that Russia is leaving Isis alone, and is kind of supporting Isis by interfering with us.

  18. so why should they pay any more than they currently do?

I've thought a lot like that, but now I feel that pay should be tied closer to the value that the employer gets out of the employee.

Let's say that the employee is paid $15, and the employer get $17 of value out of the employee. That seems fair enough. But what if the employer gets 2x value out of the employee? 3x? 4x? 20x? 100x? What would correct for an employer taking advantage of the situation? Their capital has been sunk, the employers have already earned a return on their investment, why not let employee's get paid closer to what they're benefiting the company, even if someone would do the same work for cheaper?
