I hope you don't think I was baggin' on you too much. : )
I like systems that work too. That's why I bough a Powerbook. If I ever need to do anything Unix-y, I can. In the meantime, it Just Works. It suits me quite well.
If you're the kind of person who thinks that kernel management is fun, I respectfully submit that you aren't the right person to design a Linux on the desktop strategy.
I understand completely. But to suggest that continental ice shelves melting will let the continents "bob up", rendering the melting non-problematic, is Just Stupid.
No they won't. Global warming is going to kill everybody on the planet (starting with white Republican men) next Tuesday, so no great great great grandchildren for you.
Glacial rebound over the course of a few millenia, sure. Continents "bobbing up" (you know, like my rubber duckie in the tub), rendering the melting of continental ice shelves irrelevant...hogwash.
And, with a nick like "Capitalist 1", I'm sure that all the scientists you know don't belong to some kind of right-leaning "think tank" aka lobbying group.
I mean, you couldn't possibly be biased or anything, could you?
Time Warner cable is beholden to the content companies. Because they are one.
Why would the bandwidth companies accept a radical increase in their bandwidth costs, and not price their service out of sight? Yes, they SAY that they offer unlimited service, but I guaran-damn-tee you that their backbone connection is "unlimited".
If Apple thinks it's in Apple's interest to allow Real to piggyback on the success of the iPod, they will do so. They are under no obligation to cooperate.
How many laptops use industry standard batteries? How much do you hear Duracell crying about it?
Real came up with a stupid business model, and it didn't work. Tough cookies.

Hmm...so an online media outlet has an editorial slant? WOW. Stop the presses.
It's silly to think you're going to get unbiased, evenhanded info from ANY single source.
You have the audacity to whine about a commercial bias at /., when you have a "Free iPod link!" in your .sig? Wow. Mr Pot, meet Mr. Kettle.
/.'s editing.
Nobody makes you read the articles. Nobody makes you post. You don't get "cooler" when you bitch about the quality of

I don't know them. I also don't know the tooth fairy. Hmm...I wonder...
mostly his reputed lack of regard for his fellow humans.

Uh...yeah. I don't work on that timescale. Neither does anybody I know.

Yeah, gosh. If only the Democrats had controlled both houses of Congress for the last 60 years, we'd never have had these pollution problems!
Oh wait.
The rest of the world also decided that giving Poland and Czechoslovakia to Germany in 1938 was a good idea.
Just because lots of countries agree, doesn't make 'em right.

I'd love to see your experimental data demonstrating this "land masses bobbing up" phenomenon.
I think you're full of crap.
Right, and nobody's ever been wrong with a statement like THAT before.
Just because you can't imagine it doesn't mean it isn't interesting.
I used to read books on long car trips. I know...it's crazy.

How much you want to bet that the broadband providers will make sure this doesn't become viable?
" How many of those laptops is it impossible to get a battery for from third parties?"
Most of them.
"And how many of the manufacturers have changed their design to stop the third party batteries from working after they've started being made?"
All of them.
Having a monopoly is not illegal. Abusing a monopoly is. A court gets to decide when that happens. You do not.
You might think Apple is an abusive monopoly. Join the guy's lawsuit. Maybe the judge will agree with you. Don't buy Apple's products.
I think you're being silly.
Would you care to cite the case that has determined that iTunes has an illegal monopoly? I'd be fascinated.
Nobody has to use iTunes. There are plenty of viable alternatives.

I went to a state school, which subsidized my tuition with oil money.
I got pretty much nothing else. I worked two jobs to get through school.
Pay for my own education.
You got a job, so there must not be a problem? Yeah, that's logical.
