The problem occurs when that 14 year old starts doing something else that the government doesn't like, such as vocally opposing some policy action. The government can then discredit their opposition by saying "Well, gee, this person is entitled to speak, but look! He's been stealing music since he was 14! He's obviously a bad person, and we're going to go ahead and prosecute him for that."
Police states like it when everybody is an unprosecuted criminal.
Rules about English are neither rules, nor are they about English. They're about some weird Platonic ideal of a Romance language that exists in the heads of inflexible people.
Two things give me pause about the Clie. MemoryStick is proprietary, and my Sony Walkman I saved for months to buy when I was in elementary school self-destructed, making me a lifetime Sony hater.
In case you're not aware, the HandEra V330 has this capability as well. And it has compact flash AND secure digital expansion ports, both of which can be used simultaneously.
IMO this is the best PalmOS handheld available, even though it's not color. Awesome piece of hardware.
Guess my only issue with that is that Garmin has successfully lobbied the gummint to allow them to use data on the FRS channel, but then they're going to lobby the gummint to give them a monopoly on that "technology" (by applying for a patent).
Guess I'd be happier (and more apt to buy one) if I thought it would be interoperable with other companies' devices.
Seems pretty clear. Many militia devotees believe that the income tax is unconstitutional (the constitutional amendment to the contrary), and they rely on silly legal conceits to try to gum up court cases.
The person in question apparently tried to use such a legal conceit to defend himself, and the judge throwed he ass in jail.

OK, each photon is exactly the same "size", by definition. The only difference between two photons is their wavelength.
More photons on a small area might be a Bad Thing. That's the "too powerful" part. Individual photons are not focused. Individual photons are the same in "regular" light and laser light. The only thing with laser light is that the photons are all oscillating in the same direction. So, therefore, laser light is not intrinsically more dangerous than regular light. Right?
Yes, some lasers can damage your eyes. So can Q-Beams. So can the sun. What is INHERENTLY dangerous about lasers? That's what I'd like to know.
A photon's a photon, right? If it's too powerful, it's gonna burn stuff. If it's not, it won't. What's special about laser light that causes your concern?
But your PC is a general-purpose tool. Your analogy breaks when you talk about hardware. How many displays/processors/memory systems do you want to schlep around?

I always thought it was "do him lefthanded", which is ripe for all sorts of innuendo.
These companies are still making far less money from students than they would from a same-sized population of other computer users. The reason students in particular pirate software is because it's stupendously easy to break the "laws" of supply and demand, simply because the supply of any given program is practically infinite. Since I MUST have Matlab in order to complete my degree plan (my work schedule is such that I can not spend hours on end at the school computer labs), if the software is not priced affordably, I WILL pirate it.
The sooner these software companies stop worrying about how many theoretical sales they "lose" to piracy, and start pricing their packages attractively to EVERYBODY (not just students), the better.
The tricky bit is that, with the DMCA, any scheme developed by an industry consortium is backed up by the guns of the FBI. The law that denies us our freedoms ALREADY exists...the content companies just want to extend that.
If you'd shell out for a name-brand x86 box, what's the difference between that and shelling out for a name-brand PowerPC box? Seriously...if Apple's not going to support at least a reasonable subset of PC hardware (which I believe would be a company-killing support nightmare from hell) they ought to concentrate on doing what they do best...selling the most elegant integrated PC systems available.
(no, not integrated system like in your car or your SCARA robot, integrated like all fits together and works the way it's supposed to. Unlike every PC I've ever seen in my life.)
Job zero for the United States Air Force over any battlefield is SEAD-suppression of enemy air defenses. The Air Force is catastrophically good at this task.
Air Dominance, the current strategic dictum of American air operations, calls for the utter destruction of all anti-air weapons (ground and air based) in a very very small amount of time after the commencement of hostilities. While man-portable surface to air missiles will continue to pose a major tactical threat, the logistical difficulties of creating an integrated AAA system from man-portable missiles will continue to be difficult and expensive.
Anyhow, this laser is supposed to be able to zap incoming SAMs...
Pretty easy, actually, if you consider that the aircraft is going to be traveling at 300+ knots. The really surprising thing (that can happen, given the God-like fire-control systems on the Spectre) is that two rounds can and do hit the same thing.
Look, don't take this the wrong way, but I'd like to make an observation.
Why would you concede the entire month of February to the forces of commecialism? Dude, get out there and LIVE LIFE. Having an SO is wonderful and all, but there's no substitute for taking a strong stand for yourself, attacking the world head on, and DEFYING anybody who says that your life is in any way incomplete without "somebody special" in it.
While you're living that way, I guarantee you'll be a lot more interesting to your desired mates.
You're absolutely right. Let's just execute whatever half-assed plan some wacko scientist can get to us fastest.
Seems more to me like we're reviewing fire safety while burning a candle. The timescales on this environment thing are awfully long...we have time to study the problem (honestly!) before leaping into action. Remember the whole thing with getting rid of freon? Has anybody told you that the replacement for freon, while somewhat less harmful to the environment, eats steel? That means your air conditioner will wear out faster, leaking more ick into the environment. Although the ick is less icky than freon, more will escape into the environment.
But we've Done Something, so we don't have to worry about that problem. Right?
Gosh, you're right. The hundreds of millions of Americans who work at night are going to destroy the environment with their video renting habits. Thank GOD FlexPlay is here to save us from ourselves!
Repeat after me. Hydrogen is not an energy source.
To get large amounts of hydrogen, you have to crack it out of water, which is tremendously costly in terms of electricity. Where do you get the electricity? That's right! Same place we get it right now...fossil fuels!
Now, that's not to say the technology won't be very useful...but hydrogen fueled cars are NOT a panacea.
Anyway, if you see a niche in that market, nobody's stopping you from exploiting it. Go for it!

Yeah. There exists a power density that is safe to the human eye. That power density is NOT ZERO.
Focusing a 1W light on 1 rod or cone would fry it. Focusing 1 microwatt on a 1mmx1mm area will not fry your retina.
And a window based GUI would be just stupid in this context. You'd be able to do an amazing amount of stuff with just raw text.
