I'm almost down to One Address Book. If I can figure out how to publish my contacts to SquirrelMail, I will have Won.
My Treo talks to OS X Address Book, which populates Mail and Adium (for IM). AND, if I flush the Treo down a toilet (not impossible), I can get another one (got the super-warranty, so that's easy), plug it in, push a button, Bob's your uncle.
Protecting the children is fine and dandy, but not at the expense of Constitutional liberties. More to the point, Congress is not supposed to be protecting the children...that's what parents are for.
If you say "glorified filofaxes whose data is transparently backed up to another device with the push of a button", you're right.
The key feature of a PDA is not that it does the same thing as a paper organizer. The key feature is that, if you lose it/break it/set it on fire, your data is safe.
Just because a swiss army knife is a poor multitool doesn't mean that all multitools are poor. I've used several Gerber and Leatherman multitools that are superb.
Do they replace my toolbox? Certainly not. But they can be on my person at all times, which my toolbox cannot.
Well, except when I'm on an airplane. That really sucks, by the way.
If "the desired effect" is convincing people that Congress has their best interests at heart, and is there to Protect the Children, you're probably right.
More to the point, if violence within the context of a game (say, football) does not count as violence, how can any video game have any violence in it?
In sports, there are activities outside of the context of the game itself, which (by these criteria) may be violent. With video games, there are no such activities.
I should get a PhD and a grant to study this crap.
Here's the thing. I guarantee that, if the government does as you seem to assert, the only parties that will bear the cost of these "externalities" are the ones who don't have the resouces to buy the government. And I don't think that's reasonable.
"That you seem to take a very parochial view of the world. That's okay; it's only human nature. "
Uh huh. Well, it's a good thing we have wise aliens like you to enlighten us poor benighted humans. Thank you so very, very much.
The election boards control access to the ballot. The "third parties" (the implication that there should be only three is part of the problem) have to spend tremendous effort and money simply to appear on the ballot.
I assert that the Republicans and the Democrats agree completely that only Republicans and Democrats should be on the ballot.
No, but you could set up non-partisan election boards. Right now, "non-partisan" is assumed to mean "some Democrats, and some Republicans". I wonder why only Democrats and Republicans get elected? Hmm....
"As Romero puts it: 'After 10-plus years of reading about yourself, all the good and bad, it all just becomes irrelevant after awhile"
So, it was relevant at some point? Huh. I must have missed a memo.
I mean, I kinda hate to bust on the guy, but he's made a career out of being a celebrity...and now he's thinking celebrity is irrelevant, and that's some kind of revelation.

Uh huh, but you damn it with faint praise if you don't see that that is the KEY FEATURE of PDAs.
Portable electronic data storage is great and all, but backing up a contacts database is really, really, REALLY valuable.
"but the Wii will not. "
How do you figure?
"To fans of hyper detailed, high physics games"
What on earth are you talking about?
If you say "glorified filofaxes whose data is transparently backed up to another device with the push of a button", you're right.

Franklin and Filofax can't do that.

Why do you think that's good?
Great book. Terrific movie. Two thumbs up.
"Honestly, these computers should be used for something a bit more productive than wasting time on myspace.com anyway."
I don't trust you, or Congress, to determine what is or is not sufficiently productive. Sorry.
My head is stuck in the cupboard!

"You discover that your neighbours are using your unsecured wireless network without your permission. "
Then you're a moron, and deserve what you get.
Do you get, like, a free oil change with that or something? Congratulations! You won an argument on the Internet! Woo! Go you.
Take whatever validation you can get, I suppose.
My church had an excellent sex ed program. Methodists are cool.
You really are a crazyperson.
*eyebrow*
Right.

Yeah, there are probably at least two or three of them.
Ah. So this is YOUR fault. Great. I'll be by later to administer the beatdown.
Seems like they pretty much throw those away.
Is that Le Tigre, or Ferrari? I can't quite tell...

"God, just how DUMB are those national security morons?"
I'm afraid that they're not dumb at all.
