  4. Re:This is... on Simple Device Claimed To Boost Fuel Efficiency By Up To 20% · · Score: 1

Actually, you just proved his statement true.

You gave an example of a lump of charcoal; i.e. same amount of fuel over two different tests. In each example you gave (slow burn or flash burn) it gives off the same amount of energy.

What the GP stated is that with more power for the same amount of fuel (i.e. extracting more power from the same volume) you would see an increase in milage _IF_ you require a set amount of power to cruise down the road. Let's say a car requires X amount of power to go 60mph on the freeway, and the fuel supplies X amount of power in a normal unmodified car at Y amount per second. If you have a device that allows the combustion process to extract more power per volume, you'll need less Y per second to stay at 60mph. In addition, if you needed more torque at the wheels, this process should also give more torque than your normal unmodified car given Y amount per second if you choose to use more Y per second.

I know I butchered that paragraph with useless values (I don't truly know how much energy is in traditional gasoline, nor do I know how much power a normal car requires @ 60mph on the freeway) but it seems to me like simple algebra.

The ONLY way to stay alive in a company (and you've highlighted it twice here) is to be in what I call the "good ole boys club" - If someone higher than you doesn't like you (or you let stuff slip that may go against the grain) then it's time to update the resume. Wasn't trying to cramp your style; just wanted to point out that while my solution for cost per gigabyte was much higher, it will result in a more hard drive-ish experience for the end user than buying the cheapest SD card that you can find at a given capacity. This is actually the reason I did a whole lotta googlin' and a whole lotta reading on what others had gone through in doing a project such as this.

I can truly see myself picking up an SSD once the 64GB drives hit around 100$. Why? Well, the speed will be on par with the fastest consumer drives if not faster due to the seek times. As well, I agree with your sentiment regarding not needing storage space for useless things --> on the desktop or on a laptop. If I can access my content via my home network 95% of the time (5% travel, give or take) then I'd be happy with 16+16GB. Note this would probably only be feasable on a laptop, as my gaming desktop tends to have space eaten by games. I use network storage for anything media related (app installs, movies, music and picture collection) and local is reserved for scratch/games/dvd re-encode "swap."

Then I went to Addonics web site and ordered a CF to IDE adapter. Well, at first I ordered one on ebay. Turned out it didn't fully support DMA...??? Like they didn't complete all the traces properly... anyways, for 70$ or so total, I have a diskless machine in my garage that boots Ubuntu and plays music; no more whiney 80gb hard drive there.

I think Linux reported hdparm stats of 25 to 30MB per second. Not too shabby; since the PC is only a 900 mhz athlon, I really can't tell if the CF is a limiting factor in speed. It feels just as snappy as when I had the original hard disk in; it probably boots a bit faster but I generally just turn it on and don't watch over it...

Problem being - if most people don't natively benefit from HT then aside from benchmarks or off-the-wall memory intensive apps, HT wouldn't be that impressive.

I've had a core2duo 6600 for over a year now - and from what I've been reading, Nehalem isn't really any large performance boost for the typical user over Penryn. Usually I'll buy new CPU/systems when the performance of mainstream games suffer due to the CPU being outdated; in fact, this e6600 is the first system I've had that I've actually upgraded the video card on without doing a complete swap of mobo/cpu along with it.

From what I remember reading, they actually split the laser into several beams that could be read by a single assembly - that way if you were reading one long continuous file, it could effectively increase your read speed since it was reading 3 or more chunks at once.

Random access wouldn't benefit from this as much; for maximum speed you would need to be reading something that spanned the length of all 3 tracks (or more) at once. Writes would be even more interesting in this scenario.

Most of the business class notebooks I've used at my employer - All dells, a few ibms - every one has a trackpoint style device.

To be honest though - the IBMs seem to work better. The ones on the early dells (c600/610) had a manufacturing problem in the keyboard that would make the mouse fly all over the screen after the keyboard heated up from normal use and warped the sensor underneath.

The T42 I'm using now has an awesome trackpoint - and I used to swear by these and never use the touchpad. Since the implementation in the dells seems to be less... I don't know.. refined, I find myself actually used to the touchpad now.
