It's funny though - I'd bet that the reason you haven't had any downloads of your favorite books is twofold:
1. The books you find to be "favorite" either aren't mainstream enough, or people don't have the same tastes. This, of course, is debatable on so many different levels, and isn't my key argument.
2. The few people (like myself) who have searched for books, get disappointed when they can't find exactly what they want, when they want it (as opposed to MP3 files, of which there is an almost limitless selection to choose from, comparitively speaking...) so the searchers never bother to visit *insert name of popular file sharing app here* for books again.
In addition (I know I'm posting way late to this thread) - but I've been told of some really massive boxes that act kind of like the networking switches I'm used to messing with.
You get a passive backplane, add cards. Then you can associate CPU/Memory/Disk or groups of CPU/etc to a certain OS. If one processor fails? There's a spare board to pick up the slack. If a motherboard fails? No problem, spares in the chassis.
That's what I'd call high end! (Please note that some of this is heresay from people better than me who work with this stuff... Apparently high end SUN boxes use this model?)
That "magic" chip is more expensive if you want to "zap" more discs with it.
Of course, I wouldn't ever buy ANY of these devices - at least not for their intended uses. But -- just think of the manufacturers of these devices. They have to appear to "believe" in their devices they sell...
Just sick what someone with a little bit of imagination can sell to someone without knowledge. Of course, we're all probably like that in some aspects....
The problem with quiet fans in a server-room / rack style environment is that the quiet fans typically don't move a lot of air.
I've got a 2u switch, with some 60mm fans in a small 6 foot rack in my basement. The fans aren't too loud in and of themselves, but they make a hell of a lot of wind noise and turbulence - because they run at 5000rpm. Now, since I can control the air temperature a little better in my situation than you might in a server room (by not having a crapload of equipment in the rack), I could probably replace them with 2500rpm fans.
But I digress. The people who make this equipment have to have high airflow - they can't have their equipment fail on you, the consumer, even if you abuse the room they're in (temperature wise...)
I've also played with 1u servers, with insanely fast, whiney whooshing fans. They are REQUIRED, if you ever feel the heat they move off the back - you'd know why.
In short, in a server room, there's not much you can do about the noise. Just insulate the room and keep the noise on the inside.
Crawl out of your nerd-hole and realise that hardly anyone has broadband and ethernet all over the house, nor the technical ability to get a mythtv working.
And you post that on Slashdot?:)
Different solutions for different people. They're just like opinions.
I've never seen a focusing element that could actually touch the disc. It's possible you had a defect in that assembly, but then again, we're both speaking anecdotal evidence here.
While we're at it, I had an el-cheapo emerson portable player about 14 years ago. Screws from the motor mount came loose, therefore pulling the disc towards the plastic shell of the player. THAT left me with a disc that was unplayable... probably the only disc that was damaged beyond playability that was not my fault.
I bought a Motorola V551 recently. It has the same "dock" connector as the previous V60i I had. Why would I want to buy this phone?
It does pretty much everything the new RAZR does, except it doesn't look as "slick". oh well, money in my pocket. In addition, I've got 2 home chargers now, as well as one at work, and one in my car that can still be used.
I also bought a USB data cable off of EBay. That, and some software that Motorola sells *cough cough* and you can do a lot of neato things with this phone.
Like transfer pictures (both ways!), transfer your own custom ringtones (mp3s as ringtones too!) without having to pay silly per-ringtone fees. In addition you can keep a copy of your phone's address db, and update it on the PC.
Also, you can mess with the "system files" with a few other non-motorola proggys. This gave me the ability to adjust some frivolous things, such as the name displayed when the phone is open. (Hint: It no longer displays "CINGULAR") I adjusted the earpiece volume to "4" - they ship it programmed to "1", and a lot of people have complained about the volume being too low. (Max of 8...)
Anyways, I really don't need a majority of the features. But I did need to buy into the new generation... GSM is the new standard, and they're phasing out AT&T's old network - or so it would seem, since my service was getting crappier and crappier by the day.

Aw, come on.
Don't cry.

As long as you're not on that latest Krispy Kreme calendar that has been circulating my inbox, I think you'll be alright.
"big" companies would most definitely frown on playing games during work hours.

That's just my thoughts though.
Nothing! Absolutely Nothing!!

Guess I can't go to my manager with THIS statement. I'm never gonna get Linux in my workplace with that.

Anything that has "abortion" in it's link and is stated to be "oozing" is something I really really have to think twice about before clicking.

I can't see a good chunk of the internet
Shit, I've been browsing for about 9 years now, and I still haven't found a good chunk of the internet.
Just make sure that solar powered flashlight has batteries in it, or you'll be f'd when the sun goes down.
As a side note, rolling start accelleration times are typically slower than the standard "start-from-0" times.
