Pay a few thousand for layer2 functionality, then upgrade for a few thousand more for layer3 functionality....
It is easier on the manufacturers to base their entire product line around one set of engineering.... they can actually make something more stable (or worse) across the entire line.... but it isn't a win for the consumers since we're now aware of the other embedded features, and we "feel" jipped.
That because you do not own a receiver that can do video switching. Get the top of the line Denon receiver with video switching and HDMI inputs and you can connect a DVD player, a HDTV Tivo, and a computer with only a handful of cable and full digital quality.
Great. Then I have to buy 2 overpriced cables (I know, they're all at that price, but that doesn't mean they're not overpriced for me) to connect my home theatre system.
This sounds like my current workplace. Probably adds so much stress to people around here trying to stay happy and keep everyone else happy at the same time.
It's fun to watch people from the outside of a situation....
I could care less if my neighbors are communist, atheist, black, white, Buddhist, Catholic or homosexual. And I imagine, either through not caring, or forced lack of contact that most other people here agree with me.
Nintendo came up with the Play Station, but sold it to sony because the load times were too long for them when compared to the Cartridges.
Huh?
I thought the SNES add-on device was a joint effort between Nintendo and Sony? In that light, I would have thought Sony would have had a little more to do with it than Nintendo "selling" it to Sony?
Anyways, I do recall that the DSP for sound in the SNES was Sony's own, as well....
Ummm. Many people in the real world have slower connections between "sites", which I'm going to make the assumption that there is some distance here between the "scanner" and the "end-user".
So, even if they're using a modest residential DSL connection (256kbit up), it would take 4 seconds for one megabit (assuming this application as a whole could use the full pipe), then multiply by 8 - for 1 MB (32 seconds).
I haven't done scans in a while, but 300dpi for an ENTIRE page would probably make the file fairly big.....
As well, if they're using an ISDN connection, it's about 64 seconds/MB, or on dial up -- 33.6 for best upstream (non-digital cards on both ends) around 150 seconds.
By the way, you can't use audio cable for SPDIF. SPDIF requires coaxial video cable (75 ohm impedance). It will not work well with anything else.
I'm currently using audio cable to couple my DVD player to my receiver, and have never had an issue with this set-up. I don't understand how a short distance run (especially 6 feet) would have impedance screw it up totally.. maybe I just have a very forgiving receiver...
If you've ever maintained an application (or a web server, in this case) you're familiar with how you have to check up on it every now and again to make sure it's working properly.
Now, if I adminned a site that would allow people to freely post torrents, I know two things would happen:
1. I'd check up on the site to see how local and remote load is every now and again. Which means loading the page.
2. I'd probably download stuff 'cause that's what I'd do if I had a torrent page set up.
I would highly doubt that the staff DIDN'T know about the content of the torrents. Even though they were just a "pointer" to everyone else, or housed a location where the "pointer" was at, it was still an awfully convenient place to look for copyrighted materials.
A site like this would never last in the states - even if it was "legal", the RIAA/MPAA would just bankrupt you and your family.....
Do like they do on DVD cases - put little stickers all over the fucking thing so you have to get out a knife to peel off the stickers.
Is anyone else peeved that it takes them another minute or so to get those godforsaken things off? I understand why they are on there (shoplifting), but come on...
Of course, that doesn't beat the time I bought a used copy of Monsters, Inc. from Blockbuster. They forgot to take off the anti-theft rails... that was an interesting job, but I learned how to take apart their cases......
Simple.
It can be deemed influential if it is the opinion of the poster that it's influential.
Just because you don't think so (and probably a majority of the world....) doesn't change anyone else's opinion in the slightest.
OK, so I'm bored in a training class, so I'll stop feeding the trolls.
Sounds like licensing for switches.

You don't get out and see the forest for the trees much, do you?
My name is Voit, dumbass!

Burn the house down? Wow.

And where do you get the natural gas from???
Clearly there were less cubicles in the ladies at E3 2004
Ouch. Them's some huge and talented ladies.
Because as you know, you can't go platinum. It's just Myrrh (sp?) or double Myrrh.
Specially now that I'm done with college I have loads more free time. ;-)
:)
No kidding. I count 24 posts from you today alone!!!

Holy cripes.
Heck, I'm using a 50' section of Cat5 spliced to get digital audio from my main computer over to the living room...
I know there can be issues at high speeds, where things like crosstalk and impedance can play a part, but come on, 1.5 meters?
You could realistically use vacuum cleaner cords for the signal transfer....
What's even funnier is after about 2 sentences of your comment, I proceeded to read the next comment.
Move along, nothing to see here.... *twitch*
It took me a while to convince people that shaking my chair wasn't such a good idea (it's like having your own personal earthquake)
Exactly. What is it with goofy coworkers that think scaring the hell out of you to get your attention is funny?
I swear, if I didn't need the money, I'd throw one in particular through the wall the next time they do it, and deal with the consequences.
Nice.
You're comparing two cars in two highly different classes, which is very misleading.
Yea, and they'll leave out the headphone jack (ala GBA SP) too.
Ultimately, it was meant as a joke, since most people on slashdot start to throw a fit when you say "stolen" if it's just "copied" :)
haahaahaa....
Don't you get it? It's "copyright infringement", not theft....
At least that's what everyone keeps telling me...
Actually sounds more like a token ring network to me.....
They didn't know the content was illegal.
In Suprnova.org's case, BULL FUCKING SHIT.

Which begs the question:
Oh, I've got you now.... you're just trying to hook someone into telling us all WHY begging the question isn't actually what you meant....
You're a sneaky one!!!
