I think you'll have that problem with ANY interface....

I own a Zen Xtra, and it's difficult to use it when driving as well. My listening habits are sort of unusual, though, as I'll listen to the same band or group of albums over and over and over until my fiancee gets sick of it.....

What I've found works well is to:

    1. Create playlists while I'm at work. The Zen allows on the fly playlists -- not sure about the iPod, since I don't own one, but I think I remember reading that you can't...?

    2. Only use the track forward / backward. Since I'm fairly familiar with all of the music I typically listen to, it's not too much of a problem to skip-skip-skip-skip- oh yea, Our Lady Peace - skip-skip-skip- Smashing Pumkins, ok....

Now, if there was better integration into head units, I'd be in pig heaven. I bought a Clarion car cd-mp3 player before I bought the Zen, and while the discs hold about 6-8 of my compressed albums, somedays it is not enough. However, if I could use the display on the car stereo to see the artist/album/track name of what's playing on the Zen, I'd really be set. I have no issue glancing and seeing what the next album is on a specific CD, but trying to juggle an MP3 player while driving -- that's just asking to cause an accident, imho.

The problem with charging any amount of money for things like ROMS, Movies, Games, Music etc. is that for the user who knows how to get these things for free, the price better be free or they won't use the service.

I don't know about you, but I have enough trouble with an overhead view of an RC car....

Most of what racing would imply is that the driver is able to take many more forms of feedback all at once, and put that into a usable output - getting the car around the track at breakneck speeds.

Now, if you cut the weight down 200lbs for the driver, but added 50-60 pounds of remote equipment (+ cameras, I'm being generous here) then you would have a weight savings, and increase hp-torque/weight ratio, but not by too much.

What you would really lose is the ability to "feel" the car. Let's say the tires start getting a little too thin -- with remote control, you couldn't feel this, so you may start running into the problem of overheating your tires. *BLAM*. Well, get it towed off the raceway....

We've got a long way to go before "remote" control will suffice for something like racecar driving on the large scale, at least against a human. That's just my take though...

You and me both. I've listened to a lot of music in the past 10 or so years of my life, and it seems like lately, all the producers want to do is turn the guitars and vocals up to 11, drowning out the possibility of actually hearing the instruments...

I know that "louder is better" in the advertising world (TV ads, anyone?) but it annoys me that I can't listen to a decent band that is produced clean. Given, it's probably some producers' intents to actually push the envelope when it comes to "dirty" music, but once you listen to something really professionally mastered, it's hard to go back....

They all nowadays have the nifty 2" or larger swing-out lcd panel (color). But, the viewfinder is black and white.... ?? Why not put a color viewfinder in as well!!! I have an older 8mm sony that I bought specifically because it had a color viewfinder... I guess I could deal with a B&W, but heck I'd rather have a color viewfinder than a swing-out lcd panel. Leave the panel to ditial cameras.

  21. Re:The article misses the point on JVC First With A HD-Based Consumer Camcorder · · Score: 2, Interesting

    " NO NO NO! MPEG2=COMPRESSED"

This is true. However, I would bet that a majority of "consumers" would love to have a hard-drive based camcorder that does a good job at compression without artifacts, because they just play the images back for other family members etc, and don't edit (like I'm assuming you do....)

Now, there's a perfect solution for everyone, and hopefully in the long term, they will remain at similar pricing points. However, if more people buy camcorders that can record 80 hours of Mpeg2 than those that buy tape or uncompressed solutions, then guess what they (the manufacturers) will make more of?

Also, I'm sure with a big enough hard drive, you could do uncompressed -- kind of like the higher end digital cameras. Obviously your time to record would go down, but again, a solution for everyone.

Sometimes I hear a crinkling sound from the VHS deck, and I know that the tape has wrapped itself around the guts of the machine, and it'll be a bitch to get it out. More than once I've had to physically take the deck apart to get the jammed tape out. And, of course, rewinding is slow and sucky. VHS, begone."

    Sounds like you have either:

    1. A crappy player. Of course, nowadays unless you pay a good price, you're always going to get a crappy player... no matter what.
    2. Dirty tape path. This is one thing that used to kill cassettes (someone would have a crappy cassette deck in their car and NEVER CLEAN IT) - if the oils and such got to the point on the path that they cause friction, your tape will wind up in the VCR instead of in the shell where it belongs.

I've never had a tape eaten from a well-kept VCR. I've only owned 3 of them in my lifetime, but never a problem. Of course, with my latest VCR, I've never rented any tapes for viewing on it -- that can also cause problems, since one person's dirty vcr can contaminate yours from the tape (kinda sounds like VCR's can catch colds, eh?)
