Most scientists are snobs. They are just shrouded in politics and beliefs. There are a whole slew of topics that if you even mention you want to just consider the possibility of they want to revoke any credibility you may have and label you gypsy. Cold fusion is one of those topics. Fusion is nothing all that magical. It happens all around us. It's the black box that produces the same amount of energy as a traditional coal plant through fusion that is so dubious.
Myself I'm a big fan of the idea that the earth generates some of it's internal heat from cold fusion.
As parallelism ramps up the processor cores will get simpler and we will return to the concept of RISC computing. But the programing paradigm will be virtual processors. Furthermore some processors will be better at certain operation than others.
What will eventually turn into an AI subsystem, will postcompile and dynamically rewrite programs to take best advantage of the system. By AI I don't mean anything sentient, just something that intelligently recognizes programming structures and patterns and restructures the code to match the hardware. Think IA64 on steroids.
Just build an artificial lake and seed it with geneticly engineered algee, seaweed or a complete artificaly biology dedicated to creating massive amounts of limestone. Powered by the sun. The artificial lake would be shallow but would probably need to cover an area equal to the size of the great lakes. A project equal to building the Panama canal. It's not going to happen for 25 million.
For situations where there are small numbers of poeple and tight spaces. Pair people off semi officially and require non paired off women to oblige all the single men without restriction on rotation. Everyone single alternates. Make it a needed and required service to be considered with everyone elses qualifications. It would be wasteful to actually have a dedicated sex worker onboard. For homosexuals I would pair them up with a required permanent partner for the entire trip since they are a minority. With sex and romance an out of thought concern, people might actually concentrate on their work. Were talking a group of 20 to 50 individuals. I would also favor a slightly greater number of women in general.
That's not a valid analogy. When it comes to computers the concept is the thing itself. The worm didn't do anything, it's a proof of concept. It's more like posting a xerox of a key on the internet. No payload is no payload. There was no actual "use" involved. It's like trying to rob a bank with an orange water gun. It's called a bad joke.
Yes he had poor judgement in creating a worm that did no evil. He should have created one that did very bad things and then he would have been on his gaurd and not have gotten caught. His poor judgement was telling a bully his fly was open and not thinking the bully would blame him for it.
If were're talking about H20 I just can't see how there could be a core of ice. Core of rock sure, maybe ancoring down some ice but I don't see how a core could be mostly ice. The ice would immediately try to float to the surface.
If it's true that there is no porn available on BR then HD just robbed the bank. No self respecting man would buy a BR if there were no HD porn for it. BR still rocks as a computer storage medium though.
The next step for virtualization will be to processors that make the instruction set virtual. Most importantly specific hardware acceleration for this that makes it practical. The processors will obviously be designed for an x86 default instruction set. But it will be possible to execute foreign instruction sets like PowerPC or 68000. What can't be handled by the processor will be handled in a hypervisor processes though much slower obviously. The big impact of this is that VM byte code can be run directly on the processor.
Also hence forth proprietary instuction set extentions hardwired into the processor can no longer be vender locked. So MMX12 and SSE8 instructions will be translated and executed in a compatable manor. General purpose processors like the x86 will truely become general purpose. Think of it like the old DirectX paradigm. Whatever hardware acceleration exists, it is used, otherwise it's software emulated. It's all byte code and it runs nominally just as fast as hardware instuctions.
And yes much of this is has been done before but not on this scale or envisioned quite like this.
Can we please get some more sunday night editors....
P.S. Redirect it where you will. I'm getting tired of the monday tuesday morning flood. It's would be nice to have at least three stories ready late night sunday. Republish a few latent rehashes if you have to.
As soon as you create a vaccine and distribute it that's when evolution takes place. If there is no reason for a virus to change (by and large) it won't.
All the recent research shows how much of our genetic material comes from virus's to the point that one might consider virus's a third sex when it comes to spreading genetic material and genes. Do we really want bypass what gives us genetic diversity and a strong immune system?
60 million would be an insult. They spend more than that on ad campagnes. 1.5 million? That's like a paper cut. On the low side it should have been 200 million to settle. There is some serious corruption going on.
Hydrogen is the end run around EPA and all the people yelling, not in my back yard! The energy producers can have their reactors hosted in another country and ship the energy in by Hydrogen tankers. So much energy can be produced by nuclear reactors that the conversion loss could be much worse than it is and still be acceptable. There are already new designs for nuclear reactors that actutally directly produce hydrogen way more effiently than ordinary electrolysis.'
The poor countries that host the reactors will readily sell land for storage and disposal of radioactive waste to the energy producers.
Add value. Remaster the music at 32 bit fidelity, 96khz and 5.1 or 7.1 tracks built in. And add lyrics and other meta data to the stream. You can't get that off a CD so it will become the new defacto standard.
Develop a new volume standard. Stop overdriving the signal and depleating the dynamic range to get volume. Instead develop volume level stats for meta data and require music players to adjust the volume of the song so that dynamic range is preserved.
Devolope a worldwide licence database service that allows people to buy the licences on perticular songs and resell and transfer them to others. Legal and voluntary.
Yes but it's Xmas time. Will it sell as well three years from now? I doubt it. Nintendo will maintain it's third place position I believe, maintaining the low end of the market. I give the odds that 50 percent of those that buy the Wii will at a later point buy a 360 or an PS3 once prices drop and a better game selections exist.
The money is in the games.
But let me reitterate. If Apple did buy nintendo they would attract a lot of interest. Especially on it's next game colsole and SDK which would make OSX the development environment for it. So making a game for the Wii 2 would open you up to all those Mac fans that wants to play games on their Mac. That market is practically non existant. So coming out with a hot game that is exclusive to the Wii 2 and Macs would go a long way to promoting apple's bottom line.
Just think about it. Nintendo tends to shoot for the family and low end market. They strive more for inovation of design. Their sales are not all that spectacular. It seems they are a worthwhile company for someone like apple to buy out. Further more it would open up the desktop gaming market to them as they could port all the nintendo games past, present, and future to OSX.
Paper is no more verifyable than anything else. The best system would be a multi teir receipt system. An informal electronic count and a read only storage mechanism to record raw votes; a recording media which is physically slow to produce.
Second an electronic paper reciept given out to a voter that kind of looks like the bar codes on a lotto ticket. Second an optional electric reciept, with both a physical or wireless connection to record another kind of coded data.
The one major requirement of the system would be that no one could demand to see your receipt and be able to find out how you voted. Maybe an optional system which stores multiple votes but only you know which is valid. Just has to be something that people could voluntarily divulge outside a voting location that can later be verified against the official raw data record.
Just make it illegal where it's illegal in the United States. Where gambling is legal you can gamble online per the regulations of the community. There would probably be a requirement to show that your in a legalized zone and the type of gambling your doing is legal which would mean going to a physical location. It would probably also require local taxes to be paid; which is a partial reason why communities legalize gambling.
You can then point and show that they have equal access to the gambling market the same as any local casino or racetrack. Expect 7/11 to start offering Antiqua lotto tickets.
I am curious if any thought was put into the WTO of a distinction of products vs. services.
Microsoft can see the writing on the wall but evidently no one else can. Virtulalization, i.e. running more than one operating system at once has made war obsolete. Microsoft doesn't need to compete with linux. The day and age of running only one operating system is near over. You buy a windows licence and microsoft will give you virtualzation software and setup and install linux for you. The only time anyone needs to worry about patent litigation I think is when they get between MS and it's tax. Linux compatability is now a windows feature. Getting linux to work well with windows is desirable. Think about it, if they give you linux they can tell the EU regulators to go stick it. Let me repeat myself, so long as MS gets our money they are happy. MS is currently taking the advice of keeping it's enimies closer to heart. If you don't believe me your going to cry when you see the ads of MS including linux for free.
They really need to get together with Intel and AMD. Virtualization is the future. Windows is destined to become a segmented product with multiple versions. Different products for different puposes simplifies everything. Everything in it's own VM. VM Appliances. The OS and Microsoft applications will become one through a reincarnated Windows CE.
We will have "Windows Media Center" for games and all that DRM goodness.
We will have "Windows Office" for business applicaitons.
We will have "Windows Server" for Internet applications.
There will be "Windows Datacenter" for databases.
And don't forget "Windows Vista" for legacy applications.
And it all works alongside other operating systems such as OSX and Linux. It requires lots of RAM and fast hardware so hardware vendors will be happy. Microsoft gets to sell multiple product licences and it's products become simplier to develop and release annually. No more OS wars or being a antitrust target. Everyone is happy.
This is all about payola. The western powers and china don't want the North Koreans selling weapons grade nuclear fuel on the open market. The size of the explosion is irrelevent.
It's simply a statement in poker game. You didn't believe we could do it... Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. Now pay up!
The truth is that if North Korea fuel actually was used in a terrorist attack on the US, north korea would be blown off the map and there would be raidiaon fallout in asia for at least 20 to 40 years and to a lesser extent all over the rest of the world.
China already knows the score, they will be notified of any immmenent attack and given the option of taking North Korea out themselves when the time comes in exchange for something like a hundred billion dollars. Of course south korea would be devestated and that's why we don't just do it now.
A person that exercises her right to free speech and states her opinions and experiances gets sued... She can't afford a lawyer to defend herself in this civil case so there was no point in showing up... The judgement against her was one in default of a defence. This woman may or may not have been guity of defamation but I think rather not. In order to defame someone in my opinion you have to be someone that others listen to; i.e. someone with some measure of authority. Sounds to me like this woman hardly has a pot to piss in, I can't hardly imagine her ruining a persons business.
DRM is impossiable without chip level hardware security. There is going to be a whole new product field of new software that disables and replaces windows code security. Programs which actually give control of your computer back to you. But while it's won't stop computer infection (where there is a bug hole there is a way) it certainly raises the security bar for the basic default windows setup I install on (non nerd) family and friends computers.
Even with chip level security I'd be drilling into chips and hot wiring them if needed or purchase pre hot wired hardware if the modification equipment was beyond my means. I will never stop striving for control of my own property even if control is an illusion.

His actual crime was embarassing people.

When the good and neutral are being punished for bringing attention to what needs attention... It's just not worth it to be honest and true.
The ignorent may not listen but the dark market understands. The dark side is seductive.
