    One silly thing about review sites comparing AMD64 to anything else is that they are still running them in 32bit mode. I found running in 64 bit mode gives you about 20% improvement in general code.
    When running guile working on very long integer operations we got a _6_ times improvement. Our simulations dropped from taking an 66 minutes to just over 11 minutes.

    The MD5SUM file checks out against the PGP key and so do the ISOs against the MD5 sums. But dont take my word for it and test it yourself

    Ofcause if you have the whole system simulated but still interacting with the hardware you can do much more fine grain tricks. Because we use an ARM simulator running on an ARM when I use I run it till it crashes and look at the instruction count. Then rerun to any point just before the crash.
    This has become a little tedious and with weird interrupt based hardware it becomes difficult to recreate exactly the same error. It would be nice to record the last x (10k?) states so you can rewind to any point before the error.

    Oh I do love it. My boss had 100% faith in his code claiming that he tests it so much it cant have any bugs. Running it through valgrind showed pages worth of bugs which were only accidently non-fatal.

    I remember a few years back (99-01) during the internet boom/desperation days there were lots oc sites giving away stuff. The best way to fing free stuff is from "free stuff" websites. I got lost of stuff:T-shirts, samples... My favorite was a train whistle (huge 9" wooden thing that sounds just like a train) and a very nice box of chocolates.

    Unfortunately the're no longer many money burning web ventures.

    Strange that the only area where we had originaly visual design has now almost completely moved to writing. I am thinking of hardware design CAD where the entire industry now uses VHDL/Verilog instead of schematics.

    The reasons were because its is easier to CVS/grep/replace...

    Acording to acroread they used QuarkXPress 4.1 and not even office.
    Also note that solaris nowdays runs on an x66. Must be one new ones we aren't supposed top know about.

    OpenOffice does not have a dedicated development or support rteam.

    Obviously someone hasn't been using the MS spell checker.
    And why are they distributing it in pdf format? I bet they didn't even use office to make this document.

    Ensure that their mission-critical information is adequately protected from virus attack.
    Over the last month I have been sent over 20 virus infected MS office files. I hardly think this argument could possibly hold up.

    OpenOffice does not have a dedicated development or support rteam. Consequently, if bugs go unresolved, users have the option to resolve problems by scouring through numerous community sites and chat rooms.
    As opposed to what? Finding out you have a bug in your software and waiting till the next version or patch two years down the line? OOo is bad because thee is a community of people happy to help you.

    All in all its pretty pathetic. I doubt the person who wrote it was convinced.

    That is so over the top. Creating an entire PC just to show a picture? That's 200 for the screen and another 200 for the computer. On top of that they are recommending a hard disk?
    My version uses a 5 quid FPGA and some junk thrown away equipment. The LCD was a 12" 9bit colour from some factory and a fiend of a friend offered them to us for a quid each. And the RAM is an old 1Mb 30simm (I have about 3kg of these). There you go. A picture displaying system with no need for a huge/noisy PC power supply (runs from one of those 12v ac/dc plug converters). The images can be sent to it via a serial cable (two wires internally so it can be passed over any old cable you have lying around).
