    Ever tried typing an address into the search field on that google.com page you were talking about? The first thing listed will be links to Google, Mapquest, and Yahoo maps for that address...

    If you've identified that there's a need for this type of community (since you say there's no centralized source), then wouldn't you already know what information you want included?

    Building an online community is no different than building a successful website, successful blog, or successful discussion forum: you need to have something that differentiates you from the hundreds or thousands of other related websites out there. If you've identified something unique you can offer, or offer in a better way, then you've already answered your own question. If you just want another site to do the same things as existing sites, then you will fail.

    I'm not sure on current pricing, but in 2003 purchasing Visual Studio Enterprise Developer Edition was $1800. MSDN Universal (which basically means every piece of software MS releases) was $2100.

    To me, for $300, it makes sense. There's a lot more than a "help menu" as you call it. Unlimited newsgroup support with guaranteed response times, as well as phone support.

    Is this because each browser interprets the standard differently?

    ...and some choose not to implement standards at all, and some choose to make up their own way of doing things. Most of the sites that are tweaked for IE are done so because IE does a lot of things in its own way. If every browser followed standards, this would be a non-issue.
