I agree. What a waste of someones creative energy. When there are so many problems in the world this person goes and writes a Phd on star trek. Worst thing is all the rest of the academics agreed and awarded the prize.
I would imagine this would make linux vulnerable via a ndiswrapper and windows driver setup given the driver you use is closed source making you more at risk. If this is incentive to no longer "put up with" a ndiswrapper solution, then make sure you buy a open source supported wireless card.
It is funny how corporations which are in bed with state prance about singing free trade, hang out at the WTO, so long as it is free trade for their supplies and inputs.
When it comes down to consumers getting rid of articficial territories, eg region coding dvd - these were only done so they could price discriminate, place shifting etc they run back from free trade into the arms of the state for regulations.
You will never get consistency when the state is concerned.
People have enough trouble using ATMs, I hate when you are in a line to get cash out when you hear the person getting their plastic card returned - beep beep, then you hear it going in again. It is for this reason I never use the self checkouts.
With the checkout chick it is the joy of interdependence of workers, she is highly skilled at using the reader, knows where the bar codes are on the products, and trains everyday. The average person would do it once a week, won't know where the bar code is and thus spends ages moving the box around till it scans....and that is before we get to the ATM bit.
If you download a nice encoded X264 file, plug your tv into computer, stereo into computer - you get lovely TV quality video with NO SKIPPING and BUFFERING. I just set up a few shows I want to watch, go to work, come home and watch them.
Now imagine a MythTV et all set top box with RSS feeds of bittorrents....
It really is funny reading all these comments in favour of government regulation. You all sound like socialists. What happened to the talk of "the internet can route around bottlenecks?"
I really find it amusing that as most techy types tend to be all for venture capital startups, and business ideas etc, but now are actually asking for regulation. It will come back to burn you I guarantee.
Instead you should be arguing for more open telecommunitcations and cable industry and removing regulation.
No wonder techies are getting fatter these days. In the past at least carrying 25000 disks and a mobile phone would be equivalent to a decent gym session. Now all you do is carry a key ring and phone smaller than your big mac you had at lunch!
When we finally get decent broadband when the upload is same as download, it will be over.
Why doesn't some savy media house have a few servers with pipes and seed shows with bittorrent. You could place the seeds around the world, like mirrors. Then you produce and release show with a few ads. I know everyone says, well people will delete the ads - but if they are tiny and clever - aka people watch the ads in the superbowl because they are interesting.
But seeing as the time consuming part of bittorrent is encoding and seeding, which the media house does - they retain some control of the content. If I knew I could go to site X and get shows, no problems with copyright, people might be too lazy to encode shows. Combine your media releases in a rss feed to a set top media box with bittorrent on a tv. It will only take one company to do it with a quality production, before the avalanch starts.
Surely this just opens up a new market for a "insurance" style product. You pay a premium from a company that has a list of open source software etc that it will protect.
If you ever have a problem, then come in spinner.....
I am interested to see over time how this might affect the use of mobile phones with camera's. Take a photos - then you go, "sorry mate, was making a video call".
Now that most people have these camera phones now, when will we start to see alternative angles on news events - just like the london bombings when people were filming their own rescue. If 9/11 happened today, we would have a video record of people inside the building sending stuff to their loved ones, more footage of the evacuation. I think in general we would get a clearer picture rather than hear say evidence.
In other news, it seems The White House I.P addresses will remain unblocked as users there are still struggling to find wiki. Allegedly there have been unconfirmed reports of a "white out" scandal, where public money has been frivolously spent on white out and computer screens. No one has yet named the culprit.
Must be the schools. No one takes responsibility for their own child, just prefer to blame the government, who are trying to make school a LCD environment anyhow.
Considering that you depend on corporations for food, water, gasoline, entertainment, information and just about everything else except for air I'd say that is an amazingly naive point of view.
The corporations rely on the consumer. If they were to withdraw the above, they go broke. If some consumers are left out, other business will provide it. If you dislike something, you withdraw your choice to trade with them.
the exploitation of old stories instead of creating new ones tends to make a company look washed up to its customers.
I think that is a real problem, most of the big blockbusters over the past few years have been based on books, comics, sequels prequels. What was the last original concept idea? Everytime I look at what's on at the cinema I think "I can't believe they expect us to watch this crap".
Next we will hear this, "Fat arsed american caused the latest earthquake in california when he fell out of his SUV and increased the pressure on the earths crust"
Dont you already have a unique visible plate number. Whats to say this isnt happening already with plate recognition technology like the London congestion charge? I think you should already be paranoid.
As for this idea of hacking the ID - no different to fake plates. Same problems different methods.
What I find annoying is when you get those wannabe technophiles who think because they have a flashie animation and a cool sound they somehow have a good presentation.
It makes you not think of the content. "Here is plane, with a major design fault" BONG CRASH...laughter, no wonder.
That will be one mean jumping castle for kids parties on the moon.

These sites all have crap resolution.

Check out www.freedomainradio.com for a good anarcho capitalist podcast.
What evidence do you have of an oligarchy forming without some form of government interference?
No wonder techies are getting fatter these days. In the past at least carrying 25000 disks and a mobile phone would be equivalent to a decent gym session. Now all you do is carry a key ring and phone smaller than your big mac you had at lunch!
So hands up if you think it will actually be live?
I think they will prerecord "Live" commercials anyhow, so it will be another form of duping. How are they going to convince us it is live?
When we finally get decent broadband when the upload is same as download, it will be over.

April fool's day is a good day to bury bad news.
Ummm, It is sunday afternoon and you manage a first post on slashdot....

Maybe this virus hangs out at the fast food joints. If we all resort to drive in, it would be a lot more hygienic.
