The Turks have had toops in northern Iraq for a long time before the current festivities began. The northern area that boarders with Turkey is often reffered to as the "Kurdish Autonomous Zone", meaning that it is laregly self rules by the Jurds in that area. This came about post the first gulf war and I beleive was a result of the northern "no-fly zones."
If you look into this further, I think you'd realize that this Kurdish Rule issue is what's been holding up Turkey's agreements with the US on overflight and basing. Turkey has a large an somewhat discontent Kurdish population also. Their fear is that the overthrow of Saddam will result in the Kurds breaking away from Turkey.
Just my reading of the situation. Look into it more for further info.
I was watching CNN the other day prior to the beginning of the festivities last night. They mentioned that US Marines had affectionately nick-named the impending compaigne the "Bagdad Urban Renewel PRoject".
I wonder if they referred to it as Operation B.U.R.P. ?
Someone alreadt pointed out www.enterprisemission.com. There is a lot of info on that sight that is rather intesting to this reader. Have an open mind and check it out.
Is is just cooincidence that today NASA announces that the current active mission at Mars proved that radiation is so high that astronaughts, nor any other type of life, could possibly survive there.
90% loss or a $122m investment in their own products??? I think the point is that MS invested in Corel to kill it are accurate. I think many pointed this out when it first happened and predicted the demise of Corel to come...
Well, here it may be!
I personally prefer WordPerfect as a word processor application. I feel it is more intuitive, more versitile, easier to control, what not than MS Word. I hate Word. If not for WP I'd have died trying to write my masters thesis. MS doesn't have a superior product, they have a superior suite that most people use because it is on their machines when they get them. And hence it has become a default. WP & MS are not interoperable (and MS will keep it that way) and so WP has no chance at competition.
Sorry, I rant now. WP lost and sadly I must now resort to Word because to many of my coworkers complained about all my files saved as.wpd and not.doc. But it's not because Word is superior.
Carry on.
The shortest distance between to puns is a straight line.
As someone already pointed out PriceWatch.Com and others are great for finding the best prices on components.
But before that you need to know what to look for. Personally, I find Tom's Hardware to be a stellar source of information on what to buy. And it is geared to the do-it-yourself'er. There are others in this vein as well.
Lastly, there is the tried and true realm of hard printed matter. Namely Computer Shopper. Though it doesn't seem to be what it used to...
Enjoy.
As a long time Holomuck (anyone?) resident/builder I'm quite familiar with the TANSTAAFL concept. (Translation for those not elightened: There Ain't No SUch Thing As A Free Lunch)
We've operated on the net for a long time on the anti-TANSTAAFL model and that's changing. I'm the type that actually pays for Shareware I continue to use. My Point...I'd be willing to subscribe to Slashdot. I find it useful, informative, and entertaining. However I have doubts about this current subscrition format. Wouldn't it be much better to just set a flat subscription rate for ad-free viewing? This 1000 page concept seems needlessly complicated. Maybe I'm not seeing something. Forinstance, I have/. as a homepage on my browser. Everytime I open a browser window or check back on/. during the day for updates, does taht count against my 1000 page limit?
I read an article some months ago relating to this very concept. While I can not recall or find the exact link to the article, I'll try to relate the gist of it here.
Granted I'll admit to not having spent a lot of time dealing with Linux. I like it. I like what I've seen, but I'm far from a die hard fan/user. That may change. In any case...
The Case for Linux on the PS2:
One of the issues that seems to bother Linux is a lack of driver support. This is coupled by the myriad of nearly infite hardware combinations that are presented by the nature of PC comptable machines. Who know what hardware will be in which machine. Therefore, gobs of drivers must be available to make the product work effectively. The bonus of the PS2 is that the hardware is a given. A very focused distribution of Linux can be built and bundled with the console. It can be garrunteed to run properly because you have the same hardware in umpteen million units out there. Compatibility becomes a mostly non-issue. This is not the case with my experience with Linux in the PC compatible hardware realm.
So here is a solid base of a large number of known pieces of hardware that a very stable and secure distribution of Linux can be put on. Once that happens, software (in many forms, business apps, games, etc...) becomes that much easier to produce in a workable, stable, coherent form.
Now add into the mix Sony's partnership with AOL. As much as I hate AOL, think of the rammifications. An AOL Linux distro...run on every PS2 out there. Set top web access. Not to mention mozilla or what have you if you choose not to use the Sony/AOL service.
The Linux/PS2 bundle becomes a rather inexpensive, stable, useful internet/gaming/entertainment/home productivity device.
I'm sure I left out some of the original articles ideas, and I've added some of my own. Perhaps someone can point out the source I can't rememeber. Point being, though, the Linux/PS2 combo, if played right by Sony, could be major.
AT&T WorldNet (dial-up) and AT&T WorldNet High Speed (cable/formerly ATT@home) are not the same entity.
I have WorldNet dial-up and phone them yesterday when I saw ATTBI branded as WorldNet High Speed. I wanted to know if I could merge the two accounts, keeping my WorldNet(dial-up) email with the High Speed. No can do. I have to keep two seperate services. Ofcourse, this is my choosing as I do not wish to migrate my 5+ year old email addies to new ones. Just a picky thing on my part. However, it would be nice to merge the two, IMHO.
Now...I get 12 email addies (thrilling...) and technically 120 Meg of web space. (thrilling again) (note sarcasim)
Lets be a little more specific. The link you allude to takes you primarily to the AT&T Business Solutions site. The residential DSL offered on it is DIRECTV DSL(TM) High-Speed Internet Service. This is alongside the Business DSL offerings. AT&T has had these offerings for quite some time time.
I had been, and still am actually, an WorldNet dial-up subscriber for many years now. I've had a mostly excellent experience with the service. There has long been interest from WorldNet subscribers for a broadband offering from AT&T. They have always pointed subscribers to the DSL option of the Business Solutions or the @home servive. All of which are seperate from teh WorldNet dial-up offering.
Personally, I'd like to see some convergence of these services, so that I can have a WorldNet broadband offering with dial-up rather than seceral ISP services. I used to have SBC DSL with SNET in CT. It sucked. I moved to Chicago recently and went with cable as an experiment. I've had pretty good luck with AT&T@home...i only hope it wil continue.
Related, a collegue in the Dallas TX are has AT&T@home and have been switched. Reports are that it was painless and working just fine. I suppose only time will tell.
Just wondering if anyone has figured out if AT&T will finally converge their broadband internet with the WorldNet dial-up.
I've had their WorldNet dial-up service for years now. Mainly because I do not want to migrate email addies...and I haven't used it much in years since having a braodband connection. I'd love to have a single account though.
I suspect the reason is contacts lists and not email syncing....

You should have just turned to The Weather Channel on digital cable when the site was unavailable.

Actually, it's still there. Just not on the main page.
Interesting note: it goes behind the MNS 8 add, so as not to obscure it. It will cover any other add/graphic on the page.

Just wondering...
did you need to do a reset on the cable modem or just leave it powered on?
I've inquired about this before. AT&T directs one to their business solutions website for static IP broadband solutions.
Try turning it on.
;-)
It should be flashing as it tries to tune in the network.
If it is solid black, it means it is off.
Depending on the model, of course.
