  2. I've been waiting for this...now I don't care. on Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided Ships · · Score: 1

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...

I started playing on the original Star Wars Mush. It was fun an I had a great time helping to develop it and code useful objects. As an avid table top gamer, I was very interested in the advantages of online play. I eventually helped to lay the groundwork for the system to enact "The Force" in the game.

Further exploits in the world of mushes/mucks/muds as player and admin resulted...

I ended up at grad school with little time for anything and that all came to a crashing halt. Oh well. During that time SW:G was announced and I eagerly awaited the day I could play it. When looking for post grad school employment I even pursued a position as a world designer for SW:G. I didn't get the job. Boo Hoo for me.

Anyhow, my point: I think they've spent a awful lot of effort on the visuals but I really wonder what they've done for the game system. I admit I'm out of touch on the progress as the delays, delays, delays have forced me to look elsewhere. (Sorry if this next comment is flame bait..) The Episode 1 failed because too many people expected it to be something radically different that what it was. I think SW:G may follow the same path because so many of those that are going to want to play it have such strong ideas as to what it should be that they are going to be sorely disappointed with the product.

    My 2 cents.

  3. Cost of Portability on Verizon Drops Opposition To Cell-Number Portability · · Score: 2

There are several articles covering this story. Verizon states that it would cost around $0.15 per month to allow for Local Number Portability (LNP). Other carriers seem, according to the stories, to charge $1.50 - $2.00 per month for it.

Verizon now things the cost is low enough that the carriers should just absorb it. How much are you willing to pay for this ability?

Me, I think it should not be a monthly additional fee.

  7. Lack of Hi Rez non-issue on Handspring Shows Treo 600 Smartphone at CeBIT · · Score: 1

The 600 isn't being marketed to the techno-geek (of which I am) audience that wants to have a mobile paltform for their p0rn. That's the only reason anyone needs high rez on these devices...that ans slick multi-media.

This 600 is an "enterprise" device for the corporate market. Ad mentioned in the video. It's for looking up travel info, flight info, weather, IMing with other workers, reading email, writing quick memos and taking notes... IMHO.

Would I like hi-rez. Yes. But if that's what you want, get a device with a BIGGER screen that will make the high rez worth your while.

Look, I first got a Visor Platinum. Then I snagged a new Prism at refurb prices the day they were discontinued. I had been condsidering the Treo, as it was just out, but couldn't justify the cost. A co-worker has a Sony Clie NV90 or something like that. And it is--especially because of the graphics-"slicker than cow slobber." This is because it is hi-rez. It also has a friggin' huge display. I really can't imagine seeing anything more on a display with double the rez but smaller size than my Prism.

I have enough trouble reading the text on my 15" laptop LCD display. I just have to think that the rez issue isn't a real factor in all this. Lost point for WOW factor, but made up elsewhere.

I'm not even sold on the whole concept of the integrated pda/phone. This may be the closest thing that looks like a workable device to me, but it imposes limitations. How do I look up something when on the phone? Use an ear bud? Not always an option. Speaker Phone? (does the 600 feature this?) Maybe I don't want everyone around me to hear the convo. I think a smart phone (maybe even the 600 with 'limited' pda fuctions) with wireless connectivity to a seperate PDA device is still the way to go. More versitile...

    Again... IMHO.

Strap on a couple of extra SRB's and get rid of the damn external tank and it's foam. It's a bloated piece of equipment anyhow. And the SST main engines don't really do much for getting the SST into orbit anyhow.

Yes, this is a gross oversimplification, but I think it's a valid topic point without getting into the gross technical details of how to implement it.

Okay, so now you have to deal with the newly reported explosive bolt problem....but still...it seems like a better idea to me than riding atop a giant tank of liquid hydrogen and oxygen.

  12. Re:Social Event on BitTorrent Blamed for Matrix2 Downloads · · Score: 3, Interesting

I disagree. I design theatres on a daily basis. There is a distinct difference here between "cinemas" and "theatres." (and yes, I know you refered to cinemas)

The cinematic experience is not a shared social event. It is a event shared between you, the viewer, and the screen, the performer. Seating in cinemas is designed so that you have a face on view of the screen and minimal peripheral vision of the rest of the audience. It is all about you going to watch the screen.

The theatrical experience, aka live perfomance, is more of the shared social event that you refer to. There is back and forth shared experience between you, the audience, and the performer. Likewise, the seating in a theatrical venue is designed with a degree of peripheral vision to include the other members of the audience around you. The whole of the audience is pushed forward to bring them closer to the stage/performer. Back in the history of theatres, it was actually more important to go to the theatre to be seen by the rest of the audience than to actually see the show.

Compare that to a dark cinema with stadium seating wider than the average arse in the US (pretty wide!).

Now, I prefer to see a movie in a cinema..in the dark, with the click of the projector humming in the background under the THX sound. (I suspect they will have to artificially produce that projector hum when digital projection takes over. Mark my words!!!)

    Thanks for the rant.

Okay, let's move on. Oh wait, we didn't. We floundered with National Space Plane projects. The X-33 was sacked. The Delta Skipper was sacked.

Hey, let's continue to rely soley on an outdated experimental concept vehicle can continue to stick roman candles up our kiesters as a way to get into "space". We'll live with the limited altitude (no micrometeorioid protection), limted power, limited duration, etc... etc...

Okay, sorry for the slight rant there. The shuttle rocked but it is time to move on. Why haven't we? If NASA had a budget that was maybe, at the least, equal to the increase in defense spending for 2003 we might be able to do this.

We are not. Maybe we just haven't found the reason to really want to go to space. I dunno. it is frustrating.
