Try looking at a monitor for 8 hours with all your widgets BRIGHT GREEN or NEON PINK. Gray is easiest to look at for long periods of time.
The subtle white and gray stripe thing that OS X has going on is also very easy to look at for hours on end, not too dull yet not too bright like all-white would be (make sure your monitor's brightness and contrast are adjusted right too... use the Colorsync stuff to get it right).
(BTW, I have my widgets using the Silver scheme rather than the default Aqua one.)

While not part of the language but rather somewhere in the.NET APIs, Windows.Forms is a really cool set of classes and methods that let you do GUI building with relatively little pain. Now I'm no Microsoft apologist, but what they did with Windows.Forms is a LOT nicer than AWT and Swing, and as far as I can tell, the backend was written in native code. There are some articles about it too.
i agree, VLC (VideoLan Client) is great, and being at "Thousands" of colors rather than "Millions" is so inconsequential in OSX - as in OSX does such a good job with color handling - that I have been running with just "Thousands" for weeks without even realizing it until I checked the Displays menu in the menu bar a minute ago!
yes yes i KNOW red dwarf is from the UK, I'm just using it as an example of good, innovative TV. This is a list of TV in general that I like (and dislike), not strictly American TV *sigh*
before Congress, which will allow me to cut the hands off of anyone I want, because those hands could be used in a crime, such as robbing a music store or holding up the local hollywood video. I mean look at how many people already commit theft every day! I say we stop any further theft by cutting off hands!
getting to meet new people that new what karma and mod points were =]
Our group (the san jose, ca) one was about 17 or 18, a few people larger than who had RSVPed for it, but we hope to get more people next time! A Yahoo! Groups list is being set up for the people in this area asap.
We want more people here next time! 88 people on the list, and I want at least *HALF* RSVPed next time! Of course, we will have to find a larger venue in that case...
there is a great clipping from one of the papers on the singularity and nanotech:
I would expect diamondoid drextech - full-scale molecular nanotechnology - to take a couple of days; a couple of hours minimum, a couple of weeks maximum. Keeping the Singularity quiet might prove a challenge, but I think it'll be possible, plus we'll have transhuman guidance. Once drextech is developed, the assemblers shall go forth into the world, and quietly reproduce, until the day (probably a few hours later) when the Singularity can reveal itself without danger - when there are enough tiny guardians to disable nuclear weapons and shut down riots, keeping the newborn Mind safe from humanity and preventing humanity from harming itself.
The planetary death rate of 150,000 lives per day comes to a screeching halt. The pain ends. We find out what's on the other side of dawn.

Ironically, there has been quite a bit of discussion within the Mac community about Apple moving to the x86-64 ISA, perhaps tacking on the AltiVec registers for extreme Quartz drawing. It would be a very interesting move, and I wrote a small conspiracy theory about it
