If people fly as bad as they drive then it would be a deathtrap. At least you can make roads and drivers have an incentive for driving on the road because most cars don't travel off road very well. Imagine some of these idiots flying out of approved lanes and doing all kinds of aerial acrobatics to shave a few minutes off their commute.

And our companies have a lot more global presence than 30 years ago and so are able to spot new trends from their competitors.

The big problem will be the power sellers on ebay. For Amazon and the big boys they will need to purchase a software package that will be developed to take care of this new tax. They can simply charge the tax based on the destination zip code and send the money to the various localities.

Personally I see a company like ADP or someone else stepping in to automate the process. The e-tailer sends them the cash and records and the contrator gives the right amount to each state. More expensive than the present system, yes. Much too complicated, no. Someone will just write the software with a database of taxes for each locality and sell it to businesses.

This is what I see. Programming will get outsourced overseas. Jobs will remain here, but not a lot for programmers to demand 6 figure salaries and tons of bennies. Sysadmins will get automated as software matures and computers become more powerful. Where I work I see it already. With Windows 2000 we are consolidating numerous servers into 1 or two and clustering them. Add some management software and we won't need to hire any new admins for years to come.

I'm going to school and will soon change my major to accounting and then get an MBA in finance or something. You are always going to need people to count money, account for it and make money with other people's money. Jews have been doing it for hundreds of years.

These guys just charge an 8% mark up for running a website doing pretty well from what I have heard in the last week.

  14. Re:Too little, too late... on Nvidia Talks About Next-Gen Geforce, Plus Pics · · Score: 1

Every time Nvidia or Intel bring out a new core, architecture or any other next gen product the benchmarks always suck because the games are written to take advantage of old tech. Same thing happened when Nvidia came out with the original GeForce. No games supported it and the benchmarks showed it. Within 6 months developers come out with games to take advantage of the new features and the new architecture is shown to be better than the old one.

This has all happened before. When Intel came out with the Pentium 2 it was only marginally faster than the classic pentium. And the Geforce 256 wasn't any faster at games that were already on the market. But if you try to run current GPU optimized games on old hardware, it's going to bring it to a crawl.

  19. What is in the cost of bandwith? on Breakdown of Bandwidth Costs? · · Score: 2

Human resources are probably the most expensive. CCIE's and JNCIE's are at least 100K a year each. Lower level engineers are less. Then you have the onsite techs and the usuall overhead people like HR, finance, marketing etc. And don't forget the taxes paid on employees like FICA and unemployment insurance. Then there are health and other benefits. A true cost of an employee is almost twice their salary.

Taxes to the various levels of government are another biggie. The rate is around 1/3 of revenues before deductions. Not everyone can be like Cisco and MS and not pay any taxes. Most companies will pay 10%-20% of revenues to taxes. So next time all you socialists complain about the tax breaks on business, think about who really pays business taxes. You do.

Equipment costs. Something is always getting upgraded and new stuff is always being bought. Then there are the maintenance contracts for existing equipment and software. Our Veritas Netbackup Datacenter support is $15K a year. And that is just one application.

Then other fixed costs like bandwith to higher level ISP's, elecricity, and real estate. Electricity is expensive. Say you pay $100 a month for your home and you turn of everything when not in use. Now think of an ISP with thousands of servers, routers, PC's and other junk running 24x7 with UPS's and digital quality electricity. And not to mention a special deal with the power company to be on the priority list in case of power shortages. That is some serious cash.
