I actually thought making 10 million barcode scanners and giving them out for free was a great idea. Everyone knows that most websurfers are too dumb to surf the web on their own and someone needs to point them to the "right" sites. And if they see an ad the like everyone knows they will immediatly run up to their computer and start barcode scanning like crazy.

And how about selling groceries over the internet. Who wouldn't pay more just for the privilege of buying food online? Who really wants to select their own fruit and vegetables anyway? And who wants a good selection of food? I guess if they got another $1 billion in financing they were going to make it up on volume.

And of course everyone knew the future of cinema was watching a 1" by 1" sized picture on your monitor that takes 12 hours to download over a 56k connection.

But the .com's did have some good tv ads. My favorites were for that internet based college book store and that website where you ask for advice or something like that. The ad where the construction workers are hitting on that girl and she learns ESP and bends the steel and the construction workers plunge to their deaths.

"Good built-in networking. No PCMCIA stuff, dongles, or other junk. The system should have a respected 100base-T card built in, and probably an 802.11b card and high-gain antenna as well."

1 week battery life? I think you should invest in an international power adapter. And you don't want PCMCIA sockets, why not? What about expansion?

Only time I had a serious problem is with liveware from creative labs. And it was a known issue. Otherwise I had people use machines for months with only some how do I do this questions.

Washers and toasters don't depreciate like computer components.

  23. My experience with tech support on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 2

The secret is to buy only "corporate" products. Of course you will overpay, but that's where the support costs come from. Person I worked for at previous job gave me this tip.

We used to buy Optiplex desktops. Only 2 or 3 prblems in a year. Good machines. If you called tech support the secret was to run the diagnostics CD if you think it's a bad part. Otherwise you have to explanin the problem in a way that would prevent you from running the diagnostics CD. Right before I left we started purchasing their workstations. Forgot the model name. One of the first I screwed up the CD burner with a firmware upgrade. They came out with no problems and even called me to make an appointment. These machines cost $500 more than a similar home configuration so you get what you pay for.

Same thing with laptops. For good support you have to get the latitude. I've had a user break his. Clear case of something not covered by warranty. Called tech support. I said I had no idea how it happened and that the user just gave it to me like this. Dell was out there the next day. Again latitudes cost more, but you get what you pay for.

  25. The journalists' role on The Hypermedia Hazard · · Score: 2

Reporters have always seen their role as reporting the news, and not getting involved. While it may have on occasion involed risking one's life to get a story, the risk has always been voluntary. Now two popular journalists have been the targets of an attempted murder. Suddenly they are part of the news and they have no control over the situation.

This is probably one of the most stupid things a terrorist could have done. Most reporters have a liberal slant. That's no secret. If they weren't targets of anthrax, they may have intruduced a liberal bias into their reporting as civilian casualties mounted. Or they could have simply tried to find something negative about the war effort. No since they are pissed off at being target they may simply say screw the bastards and give a more hawkish bias into their reporting.

Another thing is the sending of anthrax to only democrats. Democrats are liberals and usually doves. They would probably be the first ones to try to bring about a peaceful ending. Before the Gulf War the vast majority of democrats voted against the war resolution. You don't try to kill of the peacemakers.
