I have more sympathy for those who blew $2,000 for an iMac only to be dumped in 3 years
I'm not clear on how those iMac users were dumped. The upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard was only $29.95. The upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion was priced the same and I expect Mountain Lion will be too. The PPC crowd will have a different experience, but that production ended about six years ago when the architecture changed. The path from Windows 95 to NT, 2000, XP, Vista and then Windows 7 cost significantly more and it required new hardware along the path as well. Microsoft does go to extraordinary length to support antique software because of user demand, but Apple has the edge on upgrade pricing. It doesn't quite make up for the extra hardware cost, but the OS is priced reasonably.
Of course it would help if companies like Cisco actually supported newer browsers besides IE 6 and 7
Hmm, I work with Cisco gear daily and rarely use a GUI, but when I do, I do it from IE 9, Firefox, Safari, Chrome... Sure, there's a compatibility warning, but it's just another click to get past it. The one device that I had issues with was the CE500, but a newer IOS fixed that and it wasn't a browser limitation anyway.
I've done it for years and it's not a big deal, but I don't do it because of employer rules. I do it because the company laptop runs Windows and I prefer OS X. With the right case, it even fits overhead or under the seat.
Which technology is limiting it? The limit is arbitrarily imposed by AT&T, so I'd say technology isn't the deciding factor here. When you get down to it, it looks like AT&T just doesn't want to spend money to support the infrastructure they promised.
I'm on the 2 or 3Gig plan, but I use less than 500M per month. Too bad I can't share that with the other phones on my contract like I do with SMS.
As a salaried worker, I worked 18 hours last weekend plus my normal 50 - 60 hours with some stints through the week starting at 2AM or so. It's common. The reverse is that if I don't find something to do at other times, I can go fishing or watch a movie and still get paid and I don't have to be anywhere at any particular time unless there's a crisis.
Some people have community ties, children in school or family and extended family nearby. It isn't always easy to uproot the kids, unload the mortgage and move like a young, single apartment dweller would.
I'd be fine with them not shipping the fan. All the CPUs I've bought in the last 10 years or so go into rack mount cases that don't have room for the stock heatsink anyway. We end up with shelves full of unused parts that we have to inventory and dispose of.
I didn't miss it at all. I merely pointed out that you are not stuck with whatever the vendor shoves down your throat, nor do you need worry about legal troubles you'll face if you begin distributing or using a version that you've modified. If you are not savvy enough, you can ask for help and even legally pay someone to help you install modified firmware. Try that with WM7 or your iPhone.

Probably less irrelevant than inconvenient.
Maybe they would, but after watching my dog's behavior around the litter box, it seems they're content to let the cats handle production.
I have plenty. Keep it in a bucket along with other stuff I don't use.
You have to careful letting that show in Austin. You'll get a ticket.
There are approximately 7 billion people in the world... so by the above gentleman's assessment, there would be only 7 terrorists, worldwide.
Seriously?
For a sufficiently large quantity of 7, yes.
Most, but not all. S. pyogenes, for one, depending on how you define the common cold.
Common definition.

"I'll give you my Doritos when you pry them from my cold, dead hands!"
Wi-Dass? I'll let you work on the bacronym.
Telecommuting provides many joys, including the ability to stay in your pajamas all day and the chance to work with a cat on your lap.
Does anyone else find the two listed "perks" of telecommuting extremely unappealing?
YES! Pajamas are so binding. I just work naked with dogs at my feet. The cats go outside.

Why on earth would you ever invite anyone in to do something that has absolutely no benefit to you?
The OP says he doesn't have money for a lawyer. I say it's time to find some.
I'm still running XP in Bootcamp because of a requirement of certain network devices. I can't upgrade until those are EOL by a customer.
"It's encouraging people to be illiterate and undecuated?"
undecuated: adj. Random utterance of an angry old codger during a rant.
I wish they'd just release the older v2.2 - 4 WRT54G again and stop shipping the new stuff. The older routers worked just fine for home use.
Low voltage DC supplies don't work well over distance and laptop supplies are not very robust to start with.
Absolutely. Galaxy power systems can be had for a few thousand each.
No, they wouldn't, but a recitfier might if you didn't have a decent bypass switch. We've had both fail and the only outage was the UPS itself.
The "free" aspect of the phone is not forgotten. I take it because if I don't, I get no discount in cost of raw services anyway.
I'd guess you've never been to Arizona.
