Read the readme.txt for a long history of bugs that have been fixed through firmware upgrades - originally I had problems with it, and it was a firmware upgrade that fixed it - the saving grace for this product.
Having firmware upgrades for a product is a very prudent thing to do. Anybody that doesn't think so is arrogant.
You can read the mail after it's been irradiated - but forget listening to these CDs in your computer unless you happen to have the right CD ROM in your computer.
I suspect that computer CDROM players will become "smart" and eventually this copy protection will be thwarted. Expect to see some DMCA lawsuits against the manufacturers that make them though.
Meanwhile, all computer users who want to play music on their computer get burned.
One can only hope that there is enough backlash from consumers that raises awarenes to the issues at stake here. The thing that we have to worry about most is consumer apathy.
If consuners don't take a stand on this crap before long their going to have deposit quarters into their computer every time they want to listen to a song.

All TV sets and computer monitors are this way too.
If you work with the stuff it's a good idea to have an isolation transformer around (I've misplaced mine) There is a lot of High Voltage stuff in electronics. Know what you are dealing with, take all the right precautions, and hold one hand behind your back.
is that they are forcing you to install "MSN Explorer" - other web software be damned.
For instance they give you an email address that can _only_ be accessed by using microsoft software. So if you are using Eudora (or linux), you're out of luck.
Yeah, it's getting really bad. Too bad congress is so ineffective against special interests, we'll never see any help from them. Something needs to be done though.
If every slashdot user stopped buying CD's today, the industry would note a certain percentage downturn in sales and mark it up to the economy.
No, they won't. They're too arrogant for an admission like this. Instead, they will hang a downturn in sales on so called pirates and say it's because the cds were copied illegally, thus affecting sales. Then they can justify more copy prevention schemes.
Knuth specifically mentions in the appendix somewhere that he is holding checks for bug submitters that he doesn't know how to get hold of. So if you are waiting on one of his checks, I'd try contacting him with your current address. Personally I don't think Knuth is one of the top people in computer science, he is the top one.
I dont't think aiming propaganda like this at kids is particularly "funny", and shouldn't have been put in the Slashdot's "it's funny, laugh" category.
The problem is nobody will do it. It's a great idea, but unless you own the channel to air your cartoon, it will remain buried. That's the problem with the large media conglomerates - the minority voice never gets heard and remains burried by the shrill voice of the conglomerate's agenda.
Of course, this is just another reason for the rest of us to boycott Disney.
is to supply fodder for inane plots. Don't get me wrong, I like Star Trek. But does anybody have an exact tally to the dozens of times that the prime directive has been violated??
I thought seriously about adding OJ to my list. But since it was a "personal" list reflecting my own experience, I decided not to.
The OJ trial didn't have a hold on me, and thus "news addiction" didn't happen for me on that one. It didn't have that level of importance for me. This WTC disaster is another realm altogether.
It could be argued that large media was propelled by the sensational aspects of the OJ trial, just like it was with the Chandra Levy recently.
The WTC story is in an entirely different universe. You thought the OJ coverage was bad for it's excess, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Five thousand lives snuffed out on American soil in the worst terrorist act the world has seen, it deserves such coverage.
I find that news addiction happens to me around large events;
The the space shuttle Challenger accident
The Oklahoma city bombing
The death of princess Diana
The impeachment of Bill Clinton
And now the WTC destruction. This easily tops them all. It has truly been a mindwarping experience of how so much destruction has been brought about by so few. The news addiction happens because we want every shred of a detail so we can put the story together and understand what happenned. The story is large and in the front of our minds. Knowing the horrific beginning we want to rush and know the ending of the what, where, when and how.
It's curious - do we live in an era that such large spectacles can be counted on happening every few years??
I'm not necessarily an "open-source" person. All I'm saying is that trademark could be used as a tool just like copyright is in a certain circumstance. No irony here troll.
The firmware upgrades are what saved this poduct/

Let's give Gracenote a couple of dimes to shut them up, it's cheaper than litigating this thing for years.
There's an interesting short story by Isaac Asimov called The Last Question that deals with some of these very topics.
Yeah, she's a hottie and can sing too; I found here website here
The website is gone now. 7000 tubes broken and now their website kicked in the pants - makes sure that the whole facility is offline.

I guess I am the only one who liked the contrast from the older series. I thought it was pretty good.
The closing credits are actully an 'orchestra' version of the opening. You can find the opening/close here
It was daring to break with the past, and I think that it works, and carries well with the theme for the show.
or for that matyter listen to NPR
NPR is less biased than most - but their bias does seam to lean to the left. So if your bias leans the same way, they can be pretty good actually.

The Free Software Foundation could trademark "GPL" and have a "GPL Brand" of software that correctly follows its' license.
If they don't follow the license correctly, don't allow them to call the software "GPL".
But this would require a bit of forward thinking.
