Being a complete newbie to linux, I was furious to see a "protocol error" when I tried to write to the floppy.

I just do not see the security hazard of writing to a floppy. It's something that I *expect* to be able to do, and able to do with every other OS in the world (including other linux like Xandros).

This problem is not isolated to Suse. Other distros read the floppy (I suppose to see its status) every seven seconds which can be really annoying.

Xandros gets it right -- Suse needs to use the Gnu license and put that code in their distribution.

They need to stop working on eye candy and work on basic functionality.

Microsoft doesn't hold a gun to your head, only because they probably would not get away with it. As we have seen in the past, laws have not stopped microsoft from illegal behavior.

The problem is when you go into a retail store, all the machines are sold with Windows XP on them, so the sheeple buy them. There very rarely are any macs to even choose from, and never any linux boxes.

On top of that, all the commercial software on the shelves run on Microsoft. People want to buy software off the retail shelf and load it on their computer.

The fact is, and has been lamented countless times on slashdot, it is in Microsoft's best interest to continue to have an iron grip on the computer retail market, so they do.

I am hopeful that firefox will set a precedent for other alternative software. And hopefully crossover and transgaming will mature. But until they do, when I walk into circuit city, all I see is Microsoft and compatible products, snd that's what people buy.

I worked in a large surface mount production facility. In the final stage of assembly, they would in fact go through a fancy dishwasher. Early on we didn't even use deionized water. They did switch to deionized water not so much for the fear of conductivity, but to not leave spots behind.

You want to put tape (waterproof - packing tape might work) over any speakers, piezo devices, potentiometers, dip/pushbutton switches. Remove any batteries and button cells.

Then stick it in the diswasher, I'd use electrasol. Also, skip the "drying" cycle and let it air dry. Where I live (Utah) the air is quite dry. It would be ideal to let it sit for a day in the summer sun. Then you are good to go.

If you are not blessed with dry air but humid air, it may take more than a day to safely dry before you can plug it in.

Under no conditions would I do this to vintage equipment, esp. tube equipment or even vintage transistor equipment. Old equipment will tend to crumble under the stress as old capacitors like to die (if they haven't already - google/get an ESR meter) and plastic will tend to crack. I would only do this for equipment from the mid eighties on. Before this time I would be judicious with the cleaning process. Like maybe not using hot water.

Modern components however are made to face a dishwasher, and can withstand it nicely, unless the components are defective to begin with (like some bad electrolytics on motherboards).

Actually our sun does not have enough mass to go supernova. A star needs a mass about 1.4 times our own for it to go supernova, and this is called the Chandra Limit.

According to current theory, our sun at the end of its lifetime (5 billion years from now) will become a red giant and throw off its outer layers forming a planetary nebula, and then turn into a white dwarf.

If, by chance the sun as a white dwarf is captured by another star's gravitation, it could draw off mass from that star and then go supernova.

If the sun were to turn into a variable star or nova between now and white dwarf stage, it could very easily boil away the oceans. Some scientists think that the sun will gradually increase in luminosity and that earth will be unhabitable in a billion years.

Alternatively, if a nearby star (25 light years away) were to go supernova, that would pretty much kill the ozone layer and the sun's UV would fry us.

Some scientists think that there is no life in the universe because supernova are such large events in galaxies that as life gets started somewhere it probably gets wiped out by a nearby star going supernova.

Best of all, you don't have to spend a dime for it and you get all the functionality of Norton's ghost.

I have found that W98 requires a re-install once a year, and that there is no way around it. For those that haven't moved to linux yet, I highly recommend Xandros. While it does not come with the firefox browser, it is easy eonough to install.
