We've got no such thing to even challenge all these stupid things. We've no right to free speech, no protections against illegal searches, nothing. People who watch too much law-and-order think we have the same sort of protections, and so they don't get so upset when our new nanny-state overlords enact a bunch of new laws to protects us from ourselves (banning top selling RTDs), and the "tersts".

TW, is this the same slashdot where trolltech was repeatedly accused for being "evil" trying to sell their SDK to commercial/closed source (some billion dollar) vendors? Are those people writing those comments taking a holiday or not very interested? Or if you are Apple dictating $100 even to freeware/opensource, 30% Soprano commission from a single store, dictating the _CPU_ and the OS to develop apps is OK?

Look, calm down. Look, it sucks, but Apple made a deal with AT&T to do whatever they can to stop sim unlocks, because AT&T are idiots and seem to think a "pay for 24 months" contract won't stick without a sim lock. It sucks, and now that Apple has so much clout (and some credibility) in mobile, iPhone 2 will probably favour Apple (and consumers) more. But the only way they can allow third party software is to veto it for sim unlocks, and somebody's gotta pay it. It sucks, but it's AT&T who're evil, not Apple.

If it's free to download the SDK and you use your own iPhone for development, unlocks will simply have to be distributed in source form. FOSS FTW!

So, basically you agree with me. Why the long post? I don't understand the "3G is basically frivolous" comment, since it doesn't make any sense. It's 3G so I get bandwidth. I can watch the cricket. I can connect to a quality network from my MBP. It's true the built in browser is not much good, but I've used n95s, and except for the black one, they're the same as the n72. Awesome features for a phone including multitasking, but everything is as as slow as molasses, and it'll randomly crash when there's 3 apps open at once. Not to mention that your average user won't know that apps are still open and simply in the background when you hit the "end" button, it must happen more often to regular people than us nerds.

Slow and annoying, but I sure do miss keeping a Symbian MSN client in the background :)

I have to disagree, the iBooks are most definitely *less* strong than the powerbooks! There's a design flaw that causes the motherboard to eventually crack if it gets picked up too often with one hand. Apple knows about this, and sometimes the lower-level grunts will admit it when you're getting your motherboard replaced for the nth time, Apple even replaced my iBook with a MacBook after the third time it died.

Why else do you think the MBP looks more or less like a 700mhz powerbook, ditto the Mac Pro, but the Macbook is an all new design? If you google around you'll see it's a design flaw and fairly well documented in various (non Apple-moderated) user forums.

BTW I now have a 15" Santa Rosa MacBook Pro, and can't recommend it highly enough. It's solid as a rock, and thin and light for a laptop with this much power.
