Simple, the ICQ company pays for the privelege. I've never tried to send an ICQ message, but I'd hazard a guess that it probably doesn't work in countries outside of the US.

The quicktime server is open source, is it not? Then why can't we figure out the protocol and make a l33ching program? Fucked if I feel like downloading an entire 13mb video every time i want to watch a particular clip...
Microsoft is a fuckin huge company, and they pay a lot of tax (although not enough i'm sure), and all their employees can go out and buy stuff, and pay tax on that.
Declan seems to have fallen for the fallacy that politicians are dumb, and the hubris that geeks can outpace them.
That's not even the biggest problem. His general idea is this:
"By participating in the lobby process, you're effectively giving money to the political system," Back says. "It's effectively a favor-trading system where the politician wins and the geek loses...You're better of spending time writing code and influencing Internet protocols to work towards making the politicians irrelevant in the future." (emphasis mine)
Doesn't he realise, that this will simply be made illegal? If you invent something that stops the politicians controlling what you see/download on the net, this program is illegal, and you are now a criminal. That's the whole point of the DMCA, and the reason we're all pissed... Because it makes it a crime to defeat greedy companies' desires on our freedoms with technology.
You would need to either compromise the private key or find a weakness in the algorithm. Done correctly, that would take many years to do. By which point the newest version of the product is out and you have to start over on the attack.
Or, you could simply hack the client program, and change a jne to a je, or if you can't find the right one, you can replace the public key stored in the software with one of your own.
I don't know about in the states, but here in Australia, ALL sony DVDs are region 0, but due to their status as an Evil Media Company The electronics deparment still must state in all documentation and on the device itself that it's region 4.
In all seriousness, I'd like to state that the people of Darwin, NT Australia drink more beer per capita than any other place in the entire world, including germany.
Unless you're in the Northern Territory drinking NT Draught (mmmmm, nt draught) - in which case it's most likely a Darwin Stubby - 2 Litres (used to be 2.5) of good old fashioned aussie lager.
Does this mean that Japan will add export controls to this like they did with the PS2 [com.com]? TheJapanese government realised that the computers in the PS2s were very powerful for the time and could be networked to create a crude missile guidance system.
No, they didn't, and they won't. All of that was just a (very successful) marketing stunt by sony.
It's not a law as such, but the stockholders can sue the board if they feel that all possible steps weren't taken in the best interests of shareprices / earnings.
HA! But it makes sense... If I found myself divorced, not only would all communications to my ex wife be scanned, I'd probably send her the odd "free" linux distro through her email as well - stuff the bitch!:-)
Disclaimer: by "stuff the bitch" I mean my future ex wife, _not_ your mother.
/me ducks barrage of flames from my earlier post...
Perhaps instead of running an open source project, simply allow a gpl source download with a "don't call me i'll call you" disclaimer, and like the ahteos guy just let everybody know you're not taking patches?
I'm not calling names or anything, and I'm not pro-open source or pro-closed source, I just like to look at behind the scenes on cool projects, and this looks to me like a cool project:)
"some time in the future" sounds to me like "if I can't sell it to somebody first"
Just my.2c
I started the d/l before I read there's no sources, which is a shame I was kinda looking forward to having a look at such a small project with such a nice output. Seemed like a good place to do some simple bot programming.
Yes I'm well aware of how "modern video codec" work. But they're based on full motion pictures, and hence don't work too well when applied to cartoons. What I'm suggesting is you use this technology to get a nice crisp background from a collection of frames, and then perhaps taking the moving foregrounds and reducing them from the lossy input (assuming a high quality mpg/divx), and reducing the colour count, and encoding the data with something akin to lzw as opposed to the lossy subdivision schemes used in most encodings.

Falling with style ;-)
Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for a realistic-looking lifeform that doesn't slide across the room.
Get the house carpeted, and trade in your cat for a dog.
Almost a decade after ... you blew the shit out of Carmack's head,
It was romero's head dude.
You miss the only important reason:
Microsoft tax.
Microsoft is a fuckin huge company, and they pay a lot of tax (although not enough i'm sure), and all their employees can go out and buy stuff, and pay tax on that.
PPPPht! I've got 512mb, and it's nowhere near enough.
Photoshop chews ram. And god help anybody who does video editing. Video editing could eat 4g very easily.

Karateka worked fine on a IIgs, there must be something wrong with your disc.
There really aught to be a law against doing shit like that, don't you think?

Hmmmm, a robot to adjust air-conditioning... useful... and all this time we've been using thermostats....
Hahaha, I like that one!

God I'm proud to be an aussie
That, my friend, is a stein.

Stuff DNF - it'll be Prey :-)
But then again, I remember when I was eagerly awaiting Quake - the platformer starring a dwarf.

1. Wait for another asteroid story on /. (approx 5 minutes).
2. Post bruce willis / liv tyler joke (approx 21 seconds).
3. Sit back and watch the karma roll in (unknown).

I haven't heard it so nicely put :-)
