  1. Re:Methanol? on Laptop Methanol Fuel Cells Promised This Week · · Score: 2

Nice try, if you were drinking real methanol, you couldn't see the screen. Even Metholated spirits hasn't actually contained any metho for years and years coz people would drink it and go blind- What you call alcohol scientists call ethanol. That's why distilling is illegal, get it right you get ethanol and drunk, fuck it up and you get methanol and you're dead/blind.

and 3 years ago everyone of the media companies we did business with always wanted QT, NOW, when we get new "Developer Guidelines", they almost always ask for Real or WindowsMedia...

we've continued to push QT, but just finished a film site that we were ordered to use WindowsMedia "or else"

at this rate, WindowsMedia and REAL will not be leaving much room for a competitive product in the next 18-36 months

And when that happens, I will be a happy man. Windows media is a better product, the compression in aif files is so much nicer than .mov (I know it's a wrapper but most .movs are in the same codec which sucks), and frankly, the only company more evil than Microsoft is Apple. These are all interesting ideas, except for the a few things:

    1. Computers organise things hierachically because we like it that way. We haven't been conditioned into it by computers. Remember the game where you pick a number between 1 and 100 and somebody tells you higher or lower? Remember how much easier it was when you learned to start in the middle? It's the nature of things.

    2. 98% of the time, you don't need to "search", if you organise things properly. No matter how great the search is, it's always going to be more efficient if you stick things in relevant folders (/documents/biz/2000-2001/invoice110.doc)

Personally, I think the biggest problem with the wimp interface is modal windows (this should not happen ever ever ever amen), and a decent way to keep track of more than 10 open windows/programs.

I believe there was only one version of visual basic for dos, before then it was known as quickbasic, of which qbasic was a cut-down version sans compiler (and I imagine quite a bit else).

Seriously tho, I think all operating systems should come with a version of basic, for learners and people old to the game but new to the OS to play with.

  13. FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!! on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 1, Troll

Stop telling this poor bastard that this is his fault!!! This is a protection racket as sure as any run your local mafia. How on earth have we gotten to the state where we need to pay money (disguised as "insurance") to keep UPS (or anybody else) from kicking and mishandling our goods? This is a bigger ass-raping than people who think a blue-screen is how computers work! I've seen people who work on shipping goods on trains and busses, and they mistreat your goods, and if they overhear you complain they do it worse. I've had my girlfriend drag me out of a train station coz I was gonna hit some idiot for kicking my bags around. What the fuck are we paying for? We're paying for a professional service, but we're willing to accept not getting anywhere near a professional result! They have insurance to cover any losses if a truck crashes or if your goods get stolen, so why should we pay "insurance"??? We pay them extra so their employees don't throw around what we're paying them to look after in the first place.
